Ben Folds Five record music video at Henson Studios

Ben popped onto twitter yesterday to mention that the boys are recording a music video for the forthcoming album "The Sound of the Life of the Mind" at Henson Studios in California. Ben included a photograph of the Kermit statue, but if you're hoping for a Weezer-esque Muppet laden extravaganza you might be disappointed: the studio no longer owns the rights to the Muppets after selling them to Walt Disney in 2004. That said, Ben did tease with the comment "our co stars are shorter for once". Maybe it *is* time to play the music/light the lights..?

Ben Folds Five took to pledgemusic yesterday to announce the title and artwork of the new Ben Folds Five album, which they have called "The Sound of the Life of the Mind". According to Ben (and amazon) it will be available on September 18th this year, and amazon are listing both a CD and Vinyl version (on Legacy Records) for those who didn't get in on the pledge music action. Ben has released a new Ben Folds Five song, "Do It Anyway" which you can download here: Ben Folds Five - Do It Anyway The song is an unmastered cut from the studio sessions that the boys have recently completed. The album itself remains incomplete but is slated for an autumn release. Ben also adds that the reformed Ben Folds Five are not signed yet and that they are going to heavily rely on the online community to promote the album. Do you like what you hear? Ben Folds Five Announces 1st UK Dates » REUNITED BAND TO TOUR THE UK IN NOV/DEC » INCLUDES LONDON XMAS SHOWS » AS YET UNTITLED ALBUM SET FOR AUGUST RELEASE This winter, original members of Ben Folds Five (Ben Folds, Darren Jessee, Robert Sledge) will return to the United Kingdom for the first time since Christmas 1999. They will be playing at least 9 shows across the UK and Ireland. The tour is scheduled to begin in Bournemouth on November 23. Ben, Robert and Darren first got back together last summer to record three new songs for a career retrospective 3-CD set released in October of last year. Finding it to be fun and feeling that old magic, the three original members decided to go the distance and record a full new album at Ben’s Nashville studio earlier this year. The reunited band will debut this summer in the States playing just 4 major gigs in June at Mountain Jam in upstate New York, Chastain Park in Atlanta, the Bonnaroo festival, and wrapping up at Milwaukee SummerFest. Following the upcoming August release of the album, Ben Folds Five will play a full North American tour in September-October, drop down to Australia and then begin the UK/Ireland run of dates. First Ben Folds Five Dates Emerge

And they're both at US festivals. But at least it is happening. And hopefully they're going to fill in some of the dates between Mountain Jam and Bonnaroo... We're getting new music AND some shows. So good. Hooray Ben Folds Five getting back together! I'm at a loss. (Again.)

Ben to perform at Apple Store, NYC on Thursday

Ben will be performing at the Apple Store, SoHo in New York City this Thursday, 20th October from 7-8PM EDT. To get in, you will need a wristband which are being distributed tomorrow (Weds 19th) from 9AM. As well as a performance, the event will also feature a Q&A session with Opie Otterstad who designed the cover art of the Retrospective album. You might remember Ben playing at the same store back in 2005 and we were lucky to have a live blogger there to note a setlist and take photos for us. Any volunteers?

Ben gets inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame

Beautifully coinciding with this week's release of the career-spanning Retrospective album, Ben was yesterday inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame. During the event in Kannapolis, Ben paid tribute to the public school system and the part it played in forming his approach to music - and to life.
