PFofJChat With Ben (now commentable) and BURBS NEWS
« on: April 06, 2009, 02:47:59 PM »
Hellooooo.

admin: when you are ready....  Makiko I asks - Where is your favorite place in Japan?
benfolds: I like any of the temples I've been to.  Many in Kyoto.  That's some old ****!  haha.  Old
**** freaks we Americans right out.

admin: Katie B asks - Where do you see yourself in the next 5-10 years? I've always thought you
could write a really fun musical.

benfolds: I no longer see my career as a linear.  That is, I don't imagine a scenario where I retire from
touring and then take on a more mature career like writing a musical. A Musical
benfolds: would be best written while still in my &apos              rime' in pop music so those things can
happen at the same time if I juggle well.  We've started down the writing-a-musical path a few times
but there hasn't been a focused effort yet.

Alan7524: Favorite Car Ben?
benfolds: i'm not a big car fan.  i have a mini

admin: Kristin asks - Is "Emaline" really about a horse?  If not, what is it about?
benfolds: not about a horse.  haha

So I lost my connection a bunch of times, but Mel didn't so she gave me the cliffnotes.

ChudleyCannons31 (7:17:25 PM): are you still connected to ben?
urhardcoreness1 (7:18:04 PM): yeah
urhardcoreness1 (7:18:08 PM): ?
ChudleyCannons31 (7:18:12 PM): i got kicked out!
ChudleyCannons31 (7:18:15 PM): loads of us did
urhardcoreness1 (7:18:18 PM): aww
ChudleyCannons31 (7:18:38 PM): make note that the room is full
ChudleyCannons31 (7:18:44 PM): and you're gonna have to be my copy paster
urhardcoreness1 (7:19:32 PM): what am i doing?
ChudleyCannons31 (7:19:39 PM): don't close your box
ChudleyCannons31 (7:19:42 PM): find all of ben's answers
ChudleyCannons31 (7:19:47 PM): and the questions
ChudleyCannons31 (7:19:56 PM): and just pm them to me
ChudleyCannons31 (7:19:59 PM): or something

urhardcoreness1 (7:20:37 PM): ooo... double cd of reinhold as a reissue
ChudleyCannons31 (7:20:42 PM): IS IT?
urhardcoreness1 (7:20:53 PM): in the future
urhardcoreness1 (7:21:23 PM): hope for breakup at foodcourt to come out

urhardcoreness1 (7:23:47 PM): he doesn't knwo what jackson cannery is about

urhardcoreness1 (7:24:21 PM): i'd love to do bens tour, but we're all busy

urhardcoreness1 (7:24:43 PM): carrying cathy about someone who doesn't pull their own weight i guess... constitutionally
dramatic and spoiled
urhardcoreness1 (7:25:02 PM): benfolds: dumped demo made before words
urhardcoreness1 (7:25:21 PM): admin: Robert W asks - Have you ever considered composing classically as a side project, as Paul
McCartney and Billy Joel have done?
urhardcoreness1 (7:25:36 PM): benfolds: fall tour  - orchestral with solo shows between
urhardcoreness1 (7:26:44 PM): admin: Darren L asks - "Magic" is my favorite song, but I never hear you play it during your concerts (other than the BFF reunion). Is that just because Darren Jesse wrote it?
ChudleyCannons31 (7:26:55 PM): JESSEE
ChudleyCannons31 (7:26:56 PM): JESSEE
ChudleyCannons31 (7:26:59 PM): ugh
ChudleyCannons31 (7:27:01 PM): people.
urhardcoreness1 (7:27:12 PM): benfolds: magic: er funny.  I guess Beatles analogies are good for nearly any rock band scenario and
so I'd just say that I'm sure that John Lennon didn't play "Hey Jude" much after the Beatles, or Paul probably didn't play "Dear Prudence".
urhardcoreness1 (7:27:29 PM): benfolds: I love the song and I'd even say there are other Darren songs that are at least as good.  I
concentrate on my songs because I'm a songwriter.  Darren does the song justice though I'm not sure he even does it live these days either.

urhardcoreness1 (7:28:33 PM): yes.  stems and seeds is a pot reference
urhardcoreness1 (7:28:42 PM): benfolds: though i'm not a pot fan.  my friends are and i'm a fan of happy people
urhardcoreness1 (7:28:58 PM): and says he's done pot
urhardcoreness1 (7:29:00 PM): but not anymore
ChudleyCannons31 (7:29:05 PM): yay i don't have to eat my own shit

urhardcoreness1 (7:29:17 PM): he's going to pee now
ChudleyCannons31 (7:29:22 PM): lol okay

urhardcoreness1 (7:31:49 PM): ben claims he blows the tour manager regularly
urhardcoreness1 (7:32:35 PM): danceswiththieves@yahoo.com: whoa whoa whoa, you blow Chad?  i'll have to inform his wife, Ben.

bmbradsmith: i just got an answer from administrator. there will be a transcript afterwards put up for
everyone to see.

urhardcoreness1 (7:33:52 PM): benfolds: But I believe you can musically deliver a song in whatever state you have to.  I warm up for
about 3 minutes by going mmmmmwowowowowow on a few notes which loosens my jaw a bit.  I shake my hands out a few times and wrap my fingers up and I'm ready to go.

maccapianofan: any chance on an anniversary version of Reinhold as it originally sounded
benfolds: reinhold question
benfolds: will take one second
benfolds: it was recorded as it is
benfolds: although there were session dats rolling
benfolds: the entire time
benfolds: so there is evidence of the way the song(s) were recorded
benfolds: and i haven't heard them in years
benfolds: but there were lots of sets of lyrics with totally different music
benfolds: and a song called "breakup at foodcourt"
benfolds: we want to do a double cd of reinhold as a reissue but i'm not sure that will happen
saxotillery: I'd love to hear the intro to DCYP
saxotillery: let alone all the extra goodies.
benfolds: DCYP was totally different
benfolds: and i came in and caleb had tape all over the floor
benfolds: the old version was edited and discarded
saxotillery: aw, no hope?
benfolds: some hope
copax7@yahoo.com: Any chance for another incredible "Has Been" album in the future?  There should  be one every year!
benfolds: i'd love to do another ****ner record if the timing was right
danceswiththieves@yahoo.com: haha, ****ner is a bad word
benfolds: i honestly twisted my ankle dancing to rick astley in college
marilove: hahaha hilar
benfolds: no no.  true
benfolds: was damned embarrassing
benfolds: there's a censor?
benfolds: **** **** **** ****
benfolds: did that come through?
marilove: it doesn't censor to yourself
tylorwalls: its all ******** stars
marilove: but to everyone else it is censored
danceswiththieves@yahoo.com: it doesn't sensor me, but it censors everybody else i can see
benfolds: *******
benfolds: did that come through?
relativeworld@gmail.com: nope
benfolds: really?
relativeworld@gmail.com: yep
benfolds: how bout...
benfolds: f*u*c*k*
sarah43560: yay
tylorwalls: there it is!
relativeworld@gmail.com: you win
benfolds: thanks
benfolds: there's always a way to cuss
benfolds@calgar.net: now go teach your children this!
danceswiththieves@yahoo.com: you're living proof of that
marthgirsch: there IS always a way to cuss.
bboswell@utk.edu: Ben - What short stories and zak and sara based off of?
tylorwalls: by the way, did they not assume the foul words would be alright with you?
benfolds: fran and zoe
benfolds: children need to learn to cuss, but in presence of their teachers and parents
benfolds: otherwise they could get hurt out in the world trying it with no boundries
kendybo: only their teachers will get fired for that
benfolds: yes, true about teachers
benfolds: i'm just being silly
pweisberg: how's the rship with al the x-wives?
benfolds: x wives  haha
benfolds: who said that?
pweisberg: me
benfolds: stand up !
benfolds: haha
benfolds: well.
benfolds: i'll tell you
benfolds: anna goodman is my best friend.  we've known eaach other since five years old
benfolds: we were married at twenty years old
benfolds: and decided it was a bad idea after five years since we felt like brother and sister
benfolds: she and i get along wonderfully
benfolds: i just saw her.  her picture is on our fridge with her kids and husband
benfolds: it was nearly an arranged marriage.  we were clueless
benfolds: but despite everything i'm sure anna's husband and children are glad we decided to split
benfolds: kate rosen is in denver and i speak to her regularl
benfolds: she's going to start a yoga studio
benfolds: we were married for less than six months and never lived together and decided that we must be out of our minds
benfolds: impulse yes but to put into perspective most of my peers at that time, who'd suddenly become famous had serious drug problems and a few friends died
benfolds: so my feeling is that i got off easy by going nuts and getting married with kate and she felt the same way
benfolds: we may not have been in love
benfolds: we don't know hah
benfolds: honestly, we sat down and had the same thought the same day
benfolds: which was' what the hell were we thinking?'
benfolds: and kate's was a BIG wedding with famous people there.  it was insane
dustin91@aol.com: like who
benfolds: i just sat with ed norton at the wedding
benfolds: we had some bowl from robert redford that i think i might stil have
linkaneo: Edward norton the actor?
benfolds: yeah, ed norton actor.  good fellow
benfolds: but that was kate and me.  her father is a big movie producer
benfolds: and the kate song makes me happy cause its very her
adopted1egend: so ben how many guys have said your sexy?
benfolds: dudes think i'm sexy
norajane: Do you want some mentos?
benfolds: mentos yes
drummerstu: are you re signing with Sony? they have done you no justice solo - when there is rubbish  like Keane out there, you should expect better from a record company - go to an indie who will love you!
benfolds@calgar.net: i do think you're sexy.  i wouldn't want to do you, but i do look up to you, even how you dress and your hair, etc.
benfolds: epic records deal finished soon
i_basically_rock1: I named my daughter Emaline. I wanna know what it's about!
benfolds: kate music video ****ED OFF the international video woman at sony!  haha.  very funny  phone call i had with her
benfolds@calgar.net: got a confession, ben.  when i first met you, i didn't know where to put my arm. it should've gone over your shoulder but it ended up at your waist.  i want to apologize for that!  i was just really nervous.
benfolds@calgar.net: that is for a photo shoot, of course.
benfolds: forgiven benfolds
benfolds: she'd authorized us to make a video while in japan
benfolds: for kate of course
benfolds: and had authorized a fairly small budget
benfolds: and so we made it on a camcorder for the cost of the video tape in one shot
benfolds: tour manager hovering over us and laughing
benfolds: we turned it in and this woman called me screaming!
benfolds: she said, you think you're so ****ing smart ben folds but you've never had to tangle with me and don't think the rest of the label doesn't know you're a ****ing ******* etc
benfolds: and then she informed me that she wasn't footing the bill
benfolds: and so i said... well.... i really think you should
benfolds: and she kept saying no
benfolds: so i told her it was 30 dollars and i'd be submitting it
benfolds: i'm not sure why she called me "beatles folds five"
benfolds: i never got my money so she had the last laugh (if she ever laughs)
benfolds: i run into her sometimes and she acts like it didn't happen haha
benfolds: they refused to service it to the UK
benfolds: and finally we did it ourselves but we missed the release so it got minimal play   however the outlets told us they thought it'd have been a hit
benfolds: its on youtube probably
benfolds: the label told us they wanted a specific director for landed
benfolds: and i was fine with that.  they were great
benfolds: and they told the label they were going to put a monkey in it
benfolds: then when this one guy at the label saw the monkey he axed the video because of the monkey
benfolds: i had nothing against the monkey
benfolds: we did video again with people who did 'still fighting it' with us
benfolds: monkey was my best friend for one day
benfolds: we were both being exploited he felt
benfolds: they were mean to the monkey though.  it seems that they have to be? but i didn't like it
benfolds: we did the kate video in a few passes.  we took take three.  i totally remember because we did a fourth one and it wasn't as good.  the other passes we laughed yes
benfolds: i spanked the pirate though
benfolds: yeah.  i wasn't happy to find out that johnny depp did a pirate thing too.
zildjianfan: Have you always played drums left-handed, or did you start right-handed?
benfolds: started drums right handed and switched after a couple of weeks of *******
benfolds: depp was alright.  i mean, he had more money to work with.  but i was pretty good
pweisberg: how's working with Joe Jackon
benfolds: i love joe jackson.  was a big fan so i was nervous
benfolds: killing a dog requires skill
ericthederek: ben, what's your favorite fairy tale or children's story?
benfolds: childrens story... giving tree
drummerstu: but he lived that part - I can't help but feel you just got a cheap outfit and - well, y'know
alikat91190: well depp never rode on a tricycle
benfolds: i'm not a fan of method acting drummerstu
benfolds: i feel its unneccessary to BE a pirate
benfolds: but hey, depp seems to have a pretty good career so i'm not going to get bitter about it. godd*mn it
adopted1egend: whatever happened to that theatre thing anyway
benfolds: theater thing.. i'll do it.  i will.  it keeps starting and stopping.  i get busy
i_basically_rock1: Ben, what is Emaline about?
benfolds: its about a horse!
linkaneo: Ben are you ever gonna do orchestra music in England?
benfolds@calgar.net: lol we've come full circle
marthgirsch: emaline's not really about a horse, is it?
benfolds: orchestra in england if possible.  no offers
i_basically_rock1: a horse?
benfolds: no its not about a horse
benfolds: sorry
benfolds: no horses in my song
maccapianofan: it was Ben's first question
benfolds: its about some girl named emaline.  honestly i wrote it when i was really young and it FELT right.  i was learning to make a song and it was the first time i got lucky at it.
admin: another admin question?  Amy J asks - What do your kids think of their dad being a musician and being on the road all the time?  Do they show any interest in playing an instrument?
benfolds: admin question: tour dad... well
benfolds: 'm lucky because when I'm home they're with me most all of the time until I get on the tour bus to go back to work.  So they get plenty of 'dada' time only in bigger quantities at a time with times of touring.
benfolds: I suppose its just normal for them.  They are interested in music but not with the obsessive intensity that I had when I was a kid.  They are very talented if they chose to make music.  Its up to them.
benfolds: say, we
benfolds: re about out of time huh?
benfolds: why don't you send me questions i missed
benfolds: and i'll band em out and send em in?
benfolds: it was a pleasure typing my ass off with you all
benfolds: f*u*c*k  yeah
benfolds: we should do this more often
benfolds: hope my answers came through and made sense
benfolds: sorry to have gotten caught up talking about horses
benfolds: i just love writing about them and i can't stop
allison: admin you might wanna check out how amanda palmer does her things like this "parties on the internet" it'd be less chaos for you
admin: ha!  you did great.
benfolds: amanda might have this down, but i kinda liked the randomness of this
allison: she webcams her's
allison: it's (still) pretty chaotic
marthgirsch: oh ben.  webcam next time! please!
benfolds: you'll see the horse in the hotel room!
benfolds: but we're doing another chat with the suburbs
allison: you are?
allison: since when?
benfolds: so we could try it differently
marthgirsch: yes! q & a with thesuburbs, please
allison: andy doesn't know this yet/i don't
benfolds: although i won't do the webcam
benfolds: unless i can see everyone else too
allison: i'm not getting you a webcam
benfolds: like a big ass brady bunch screen
sarah43560: yes - one huge ichat
drummerstu: damn - i look good on webcam!
allison: but if you are doing a burbain chat thing we'll make sure more than 80 us can particiapte
benfolds: second life still around? that'd work
allison: secondlife sucks cause you have to "win" to participate
theheadhoncho27: let's just organize a party and get togethe
benfolds: see ya!  gotta go make an ass of myself in mobile
mel (1:10:14 AM): love ben folds or burn!

I'm surprised this thread isn't taking off, as chaotic as the chat was. How many Burbians were there?

I know it will only let you highlight one line at a time. I don't have the patience to copy and paste each line, but maybe somebody's crazy enough to do it. Maybe the admin will do it, as absent as he/she/it was.

Noice! Ben drives my dream car.
As you know I hang upside down in a dark closet like a bat until summoned.
