WTF? He hasn't even sold out the Theatre dates on this tour and he's doing arenas? I'm confused.

I wonder if he might be opening for someone?
Or he's that confident in the new album!

He was back that shortly when he released Silverman as well.

Though, someone enlighten me.... there are venues just called "arena" or do they not have the locales plotted down yet?

I am thinking it likely that he is opening for someone.

These definitely sound like support dates, unless (as Deano said) they're THAT confident in the new album. The NEC is FAR too big.

Yeah, especially as the Shepherds Bush Empire isn't even the biggest small venue he could play in London (previously he's played Brixton and Hammersmith, which are bigger), so it would seem really odd if he was playing there and then trying to fill Wembley about a week later.

Yeah they've gotta be support dates, especially as the London date was announced as a one off, which now makes more sense (he's over here touring with someone else so does one headline date for the fans).

The question is, support for who? They're playing 9 massive arenas. There's not many bands that can do an arena tour that size.

Who does he like who is big? One of the rap stars touring the UK? (Expect Bitches...)

You're right though that even the semi credible ones I can think of (ie people we know he'd like to play with or has done in the past) just aren't that big - Weird Al, Divine Comedy, Amanda Palmer. It could just be a cheap way of getting a lot of publicity for the new album. And, as you say, it does make sense that he then does a single headliner "for the fans".

P.S. Please stop off at The Bridgewater Hall on your way through Manchester and play with an orchestra. Thanks.

Checked most of the arena websites and none of them have anything listed for those dates (Simple Minds and Coldplay appear to be doing a similar circuit, but before and after the dates above) - no clues there then.

I'm not sure it would be a rap act.  Kanye West, for example, could easily fill those venues, and Ben apparently is into his music, but there isn't any real synergy between Ben's music and that of Kanye's main fanbase, imho.

Having said that, I agree with the consensus that these must be support dates.  Wembely Arena has a (maximum) capacity of 12,500.  Shepherds Bush only holds about 2000.

I know that Counting Crows played the NEC some years ago. Isn't there a link between them and Ben? The last time they properly toured here was in something like 2003, so I'd muse that that COULD be a possibility...

Probably not, just a guess, but we'll see.

And John Mayer probably isn't as big as Ben here.

And Dennis Herring, who is supposed to be producing Ben's new album, produced 'This Desert Life' (Crows' 3rd album)...

The Arena?

*after reading what you lot have said*

Support would make sense, the Arena in Newcastle is the Metroradio Arena.

Please let it be Counting Crows! That would be like the perfect gig for me!
