Hey all, has anyone heard the bootleg recording of Tom & Mary (excellent recording by the way)? I was wondering if anyone has ever given a shot at transcribing it. let me know. Thanks.

that's actually a transcription from the naked baby photos demo and the recording you are talking about isn't a bootleg, it appeared on the japanese version of selt titled. the transcription of tom and mary in the selt titled and nbp songbook is the one from the recording you are talking about. before i knew that recording even existed i thought the transcription was from the nbp demo and was horrified! the transcription is very high quality, i suggest you buy it

Yes I remember thinking that too. I was appalled at how awful the transcription was until I realised it was for another version.

but isn't the songbook called "... and selections from NBP"? i'm pretty sure the transcription in there (along with 'eddie walker') would be this very version, not some b-side's transcription...

musically, the b-side is way cooler than the NBP demo. if that's the same recording we're talking about: dunno about any japanese album release but i think this would be the same recording as on the 'where's summer b.?' single ...

The b-side is the same as off the japanese album version (which I own).  The transcription of Tom & Mary is definitely based on this recording. It appears as the last track after Boxing on the CD, so Jackson Cannery through to Tom & Mary are the "Ben Folds Five" part, and every thing else is "Selections from NBP". Just like the RTS book has Hiro's Song from the Japanese edition.

Does the rarehouse have this version of Tom & Mary?  I can't check because it's down... but until this thread came about, I also thought that Hal Leonard just sucked at transcribing.

you could also go for some singles off BFF. here's a comprehensive list:

this way, you'd also get your hand on a _superb_ recording of 'emaline'!
