BEN FOLDS
Songs for Silverman
Epic 5170122
by Dan Cairns

There is something at once irksome and beguiling about Folds: his clever-clogs powerpop can have you grabbing for the remote as often as it seduces you with its complexity. In common with other at times overcerebral balladeers such as Ed Harcourt and Billy Joel, the Carolinan has a weakness for the extra chord, for just one more play on words. The key to enjoying his work is to swim with his tide rather than resist it: this reaps rich dividends here on tracks as lovely as Jesusland, Gracie and Late (Folds’s farewell to Elliott Smith). Pop-perfect structures that echo the Four Seasons, the Beach Boys, Todd Rundgren and REM, they engage the brain but ensnare the heart. Three stars
