Round 1 Answers

1 Where did "Rock this b*tch" premiere?

Vic Theatre, Chicago on 2 March 2002

2 What did Robert lose in the "One Angry Dwarf" video?

He lost his shoe (and not, as my favourite response to this question suggested, his brain.  Or indeed his balance!!)

3 What was the 'Fear Of Pop World Tour'?

The 'Fear of Pop World Tour' was Ben's appearance on Conan O'Brien.  As many people pointed out, to quote Ben: "This is it, this is our world tour, we'll have the black shirts that say 'World Tour: Conan O'Brien'."

Round 2 will be below shortly.

ROUND 2 QUESTIONS

1. What is Darren's middle name?

2. In which BF/F song is a member of Counting Crows mentioned, and who is it? (I need answers to BOTH questions for full marks)

3. To keep a theme going, in which Counting Crows song is Ben Folds mentioned?

Voting

Please also nominate one of the following for elimination:

8bit, Emaline03, Kel, Quami345, Speedy the Drummer, Cmajor7th, Hanny, Herbs Donuts, Renata N

In the case of a tie in voting, the tie will be broken in the following manner:

a) The player with the least number correct in the round (in which voting took place) is eliminated

b) if still tied, the player with the least number correct thus far in the game is eliminated

c) if still tied, it will be decided by the time answers were submitted.  The player who submitted their answers the latest is eliminated

d) If still tied, Ben help us all.

(Thanks to JBJ, from whom I stole these rules!!)

You have 48 hours from the timestamp on this message to get your answers in.

Good luck.

Round 2 Results

3 Correct (immunity for Round 3)

88kickinkeys, 8bit, Barbfoldsfive, Cmajor7th, Emaline03, Hanny, Harmonized MoFo, Hey Kate, Jonny Husker, Jrkeyboard, Marty, Olly, Quami345, Renata N, Screwed Hippy, Speedy the Drummer, The Big Steamy Thing

2 Correct (no immunity)

Jake, Kel, Sebster

No answers

Unfortunately, I received no answers from Herbs Donut who is, therefore, eliminated

Voting

The voting was VERY close, with Hanny and Speedy the Drummer tying with 4 votes each!

I therefore have to apply the rules for a tie in the voting, as posted last time around (thank Ben I dug those out!).

a) The player with the least number correct in the round (in which voting took place) is eliminated:

Both Hanny and Speedy the Drummer got 3 correct.

b) if still tied, the player with the least number correct thus far in the game is eliminated

Oooh…this is tough!  Hanny got 1 right in the first round and 3 in the second giving her 4.  Speedy got 1.5 in the first round and 3 in the second, making 4.5.

Speedy therefore beats Hanny on rule B by a measly half a point!
Hanny is therefore eliminated by vote.

Round 2 Answers

1. What is Darren's middle name?

Michael

2. In which BF/F song is a member of Counting Crows mentioned, and who is it?

The song is 'Fear of Pop' and the CC member is Adam Duritz:

"I can see me, three stories tall,
floating high, above the wall,
like Adam Duritz…"

3. To keep a theme going, in which Counting Crows song is Ben Folds mentioned?

It's 'Monkey', from the album 'Recovering the Satellites':

"Got nowhere but home to go,
Got Ben Folds on my radio right now"

Round 3 will be below shortly.

ROUND 3 QUESTIONS

Now, despite the moaning about hard questions on the Gossip thread, nearly everyone is getting all three right at the moment.  So, its time to turn up the heat – welcome to…

The Weekend Round

Bumper round - 4 points required for immunity…

1. Who designed the piano logo (which can be seen on the front of the eponymous album) and what is that person's other notable connection to BF/F?  (I need BOTH answers for full marks)

2. Which excerpt from which Smiths song did BFF once record? (I need BOTH the excerpt and the song for full marks)

3. Name two songs released PRIOR TO 'Dog' on which Frally Hynes' voice can be heard?

4.  Give me the song that these lyric excerpts come from.  1/4 point for each:

"A second opinion"

"Beelzebub"

"I thought just for a second"

"Give us a rest"

Voting

Please also nominate one of the following for elimination (or risk incurring my wrath!):

Jake, Kel, Sebster

You have 72 hours from the timestamp on this message to get your answers in (i.e. midday GMT Monday 14 February).

(FYI that does not mean I have to post the results by that time by the way, just that you have to get your answers in!  ;) )

Good luck.

Just had a clarification request via AIM, so I'll post it here to keep things fair.

Question 2 (about the Smiths song) requires 2 pieces of info for the full mark:
1. The excerpt used.
2. The name of the Smiths song.

The name of the recording by BFF is NOT required, but it will neither gain nor lose you any marks if you did include it.

Hope that helps!

Voting

The voting was again close, with Kel and Jake tying on 8 votes each.

Applying the rules as before, Kel only got 1.5 correct this round, and Jake got all 4 correct.

Kel is therefore eliminated by vote.

Round 3 Answers

1. Who designed the piano logo (which can be seen on the front of the eponymous album) and what is that person's other notable connection to BF/F?  (I need BOTH answers for full marks)

The answer was Summer Beurke, the inspiration behind "Where's Summer B?".  (I accepted a range of other other links with the band, because I am nice like that!)

2. Which excerpt from which Smiths song did BFF once record? (I need BOTH the excerpt and the song for full marks)

The excerpt was "Stop me, oh-o-oh, stop me" from 'Stop Me If You Think You Have Heard This One Before', which appears at the beginning of the cover of the Gallagher Brothers' Champagne Supernova  ;)

3. Name two songs released PRIOR TO 'Dog' on which Frally Hynes' voice can be heard?

Gone and Root to This were what I was looking for.

4.  Give me the song that these lyric excerpts come from.  1/4 point for each:

"A second opinion" - Hospital Song

"Beelzebub" - The Ultimate Sacrifice

"I thought just for a second" - Still In Love

"Give us a rest" - All U Can Eat

Can you please be quite specific with question 3.  I don't just want the sport, I want the name of the tournament.

Thanks

Running a little early today as very busy at work.  Without further ado...

Round 4 Results

Gah, and I thought I was making this harder?  You nearly all aced that round, so well done!

3 Correct (immunity for Round 3)

88kickinkeys, 8bit, Cmajor7th, Emaline03, Harmonized MoFo, Jonny Husker, Jrkeyboard, Quami345, Screwed Hippy, Sebster, The Big Steamy Thing, Barbfoldsfive, Marty

2 Correct (no immunity)

Jake, RenataN Speedy the Drummer

Voting

A very odd voting round.  With some 9 people being eligible for voting, one person polled a massive 11 votes!  So, no need to use the rules on a draw this week.

The tribe has spoken and it looks like crime doesn't pay

Speedy the Drummer is eliminated by vote.

And I am still waiting for that apology.

Round 4 Answers

1. Who is Mitchell Lane?

Ahhh…a trick question which everyone spotted – an easy one with a little bit of Googling I think!

The right answer was, of course, that Mitchell Lane is not a who, but a what – a street in Chapel Hill.

2.  Spot the deliberate mistake Ben made in the following excerpt from 'Kate':

"Down by Rosemary and Cameron, she hands out the Bhagavad Gita"

Correctly spotted again by all, the deliberate mistake is that Rosemary and Cameron do not intersect (as suggested by "down by"), they run parallel.  Ben just preferred the way they sound together.  Interestingly though, Mitchell Lane and Rosemary DO intersect!  Click for a map

3. Which major sports event used the song "Army" in it's UK advertisements?

I needed more here than just rugby, or a rugby tournament I'm afraid.

The correct answer was the 6 Nations Tournament.

This is an annual rugby (think american football without the girlie pads!! ;o) ) tournament featuring England, France, Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Italy.  The ad campaign was known as 'Big Heads' as it had caricatures of players from each country, with big heads, playing rugby around their nation's landmarks.  And it was featured heavily on this site, so no excuses for any non-UKers!

Round 5 will appear below shortly.

1. Name two non-BFF songs written by Darren and one non-BFF song written by Robert that have women’s names in the title (no, not Amelia Bright…).

EDIT: Please note that the due date is midday this coming Friday 18th, not the 28th as James typoed earlier (now corrected). Thanks to 'Screwed Hippy' for pointing that out. Have a bonus mark this round.

Only kidding. You get squat.

2.  Who did Ben once say he would add to Darren and Robert in BFF if he had no choice?

Some people have asked for clarification of this question:

Bascially, if Ben had to add someone, who would it be?

I thought it was quite clear...?!

Round 5 Results

Evidently it STILL isn't hard enough…going to have to put my Ben hat on!

3 Correct (immunity for Round 6)

88kickinkeys, 8bit, Barbfoldsfive, Cmajor7th, Jonny Husker, Jrkeyboard, Screwed Hippy, The Big Steamy Thing

2 Correct (no immunity)

Harmonized MoFo, Marty, Sebster

1 Correct (no immunity)

Emaline03, RenataN, Jake

No answers

Unfortunately, I received no answers from Quami 345, who is therefore eliminated.

Voting

With only two people up for the vote, it was always going to be a bit of a battle.

However, Renata proves her popularity again by surviving her third elimination, with Jake polling 10 votes.

The tribe has spoken and Jake is eliminated.

Round 4 Answers

1. Name two non-BFF songs written by Darren and one non-BFF song written by Robert that have women’s names in the title (no, not Amelia Bright…).

There were four possible correct answers for Darren: Goodbye Carol Anne, Norina, Valerie is Bored, or In a Letter to Delores.  As for Robert, he wrote a song called "Listening to Kim" with his pre-BFF band, Toxic Popsicle.  No half credits for getting part of the answer.

2.  Who did Ben once say he would add to Darren and Robert in BFF if he had no choice?

I was looking for Yngwie Malmsteen – Ben once said he would add Yngwie to the band if he had a gun put to his head and was told to add a fourth member.

However, I also accepted the guy from Built to Spill, or the lead guitar guy in Radiohead, as per an interview on Michael Bluejay's site which I cunningly overlooked when setting the question!

3.  Ben's parents took him to a child psychologist for his odd habit of doing what?

Breaking records he didn't like while placing the ones he did like on the floor and running around them while singing "all the Elvis records got broken"

Round 5 will appear below shortly.

ROUND 6 QUESTIONS

Its Friday, and that can mean only one thing…

The Second Weekend Round

1.  When Ben toured with The Divine Comedy in the UK, he played 2 instruments other than piano. Name them both (and be specific).

2.  How many different versions of the official Ben Folds website has there been? (not including the 'coming soon' page)

3.  What is Ben's connection between The Last Polka and Missing the War? (and no, not that BFF recorded both of them! )

4. Give me the song that these lyric excerpts come from.  1/4 point for each:

"Well f*ck you" (Other than SFTD or SFTD Minor)

"You broke my heart too"

"Ignore me"

"heart and mind"
