Andy Wallace mixed WAEA and also Everclear's debut, World of Noise.
And everyone knows now that every night now will be Steven's last night in town.

He mixed "Messner" too
Yup, Andy Wallace is awesome.  He also recorded and mixed Phish's "The Story of the Ghost", among many other things.  He has a Nirvana credit somewhere, I'm almost sure. He's a star, if you will, in the recording community.
They got him to mix WAEA b/c it stipulated in their contract with Sony that the band could have total creative control of the project (which allowed them to sidestep recording studios and work out of Ben's house, as well as choose Caleb to produce as opposed to some better-known guy)if someone else could mix the record.  They were MORE than happy to get Wallace in on it b/c they were all very dissatisfied with the sound they had gotten thus far.  He did some magic work on WAEA.
Doesn't it say in the liner notes that he helped record and/or mix RtS as well?

due to a few technical difficulties involvong the audio on my computer i have only been able to heat 'one down' for the first time since recieving my b-sides cd.  and i must say, i love it.  however, kinda makes me sad.  i imagine him trying to finish RTS and everytings all commercial and corporate and less fun and he has to finish this cd and he just doesnt want to put any old thing on it but he kind of has to to pay th ebills and feed the babies.  so hes kinda just throwing int he proverbial towel just to get his cd done and out on the shelves.  because thats what corporate wants.  i dont know.  it just makes me sad.   we all know ben loves playing and writing music, but how sick of it does he get and does he sometimes just write because its his job and he has to.  its just a down song.  (but i love it.)

I love it, too, and I don't know the last time the plight of the pop artist was put so directly and succinctly.  It's funny, b/c people tend to think there CAN'T be much of a plight for people in that position, but over and over again we hear about the downsides.

i love that song and i always want to listen to it, but every time i do, it makes me sad.  i dont know why.  but i still love it.  oh, that ben.  here he goes, meddling with my emotions again through song . . .  which reminds me of a homer quote:  "He lied to us through song!  I hate when people do that!"

Ben talked about this song at the Columbus show last week...

He said that the problem was that he had to finish his obligations in a publishing deal which he was unhappy with.

I guess he had 4 songs left to write for the deal
"I got one I finished yesterday", and because he had written some of the next one he had "3.6 to go" before he was "out of here" (the unsavory publishing deal).

He played the song solo on the piano, and it sounded sooo much better than the studio track...

Later,
Jon

Come on guys.  About the 1 down and 3.6 to go, he says in the song that they are lines of a song, Andy gave him some lines and he already has one so he has 3.6 to go, or something like that.  How long have you guys listened to Ben?  I would bet you anything it's just him being goofy, haven't you ever said when asked the time "It's 12:43 and 14 seconds" or something like that?  He could say, "1 down and 3 to go", but wouldn't it be very Ben-like to make it an odd fraction of a line?

That's just my take on it.

Hello theFood. Welcome to the Suburbs.
If you've listened to the Bowery performance he says Andrew brought along tracks/songs and not lines. Also Ben has been quoted extensively that he had 4.6 songs left on a prior recording contract.

Welcome thefood!  Hope you continue to post here :)

Fan is definitely right, as Ben has said several times that the numbers in "One Down" refer to stipulations in his recording contract, but to each his or her own.  You find meaning where you want it.

~g, now, about "Philosophy" being about Ben's male member...
tell me greyseal, how does it feel?  ~ben folds, 3 dec 2002

Well, if you'd like to, I know where you can find some.
www.benfolds.info  :D

Anyway, we also now know that Andrew refers to Ben's brother-in-law and not this Andy Wallace.
