The Sound of the Life of the Mind - What do you think?
« on: September 12, 2012, 09:39:18 AM »
It's finally here! We've been waiting for this since it was first mentioned around the time of the Retrospective, and many have been resisting the streaming previews until they got the album in its entirety.

So now you can hear it - what do you think? Was it what you were expecting? Can you hear anything of their solo efforts? And is the BFF magic still there?

Share your thoughts!

Only half way through at the moment - but so far, loving it! Sky High is beautiful...

And is it me or has livestream crashed? Damnit.

Love the album through "Do It Anyway", like "Hold That Thought" and "Away While You Were Here", and pretty meh on "Thank You For Breaking My Heart"

Really?  I thought "Thank You for Breaking My Heart" was far and away the best song on the album.  I was blown away by that one.  I was also very pleasantly surprised by the tracks that hand't yet leaked.  "Draw a Crowd" and "Hold That Thought" were instantly like-able.

It's not got the appeal of self titled or WAEA for me which I was maybe hoping for.  Some of it i'm finding it difficult to get into.  Probably just take a few listens before I get just how fantastic it is.  Personally Draw A Crowd is near the top for me, im liking the messner feel of it with its opening, kinda like redneck past.

I've listened to it a few times now and, well, some of the excitement is wearing off.

Michael Praytor is the standout for me. That, 'Do It' and 'Thank You' are probably my favs. The rest is solid enough and I was loving 'Draw a Crowd' but the constant 'dicks on a wall' lyric kind of spoils it for me.

I'll give it time but I have a feeling that I'm unlikely to be listening to this a week or two from now.

Sorry to be a downer! It's only my opinion and I'm often wrong.  :)

Kind of in the same boat.  "Hold That Thought" and "Away While You Were Here" are the lull of the album for me.  (Though, I have to admit "Hold That Thought" has some of the Messner flavor to it listening to it more this evening that might pick it up for me.)  And I think I fell a bit victim to hype about "Thank You for Breaking My Heart". Reviews and quick blurbs were saying it was Ben's best ballad yet.  I'd have to disagree.  And when you have album closers like "Evaporated," "Lullabye," and "Boxing" (and even "The Luckiest," "Kylie...," and "Belinda" from the solo work), it doesn't stack up that strong.  I wouldn't say I'm meh on it, but it doesn't rate higher than above average for me at the moment.  Kind of feels more like the stuff Ben did on Over the Hedge than anything else he's done.

As for the opening 2/3 of the album, even with the disparate styles, it might be their most accomplished album yet.  I can definitely hear the growth musically and I think the time apart brought some interesting things to the table.  I'd say "Michael Praytor" is probably my fave track, with "SotLotM" a close second.  "Sky High" sounds a lot like Darren's Hotel Lights work.  And I love the experimentation on "Erase Me" and piano & strings on "On Being Frank".

For me, this is going to be in constant rotation for a long, long time.
A one-hit wonder with no hits...

I'm going to keep it simple and just say I love it.  Really never thought I'd see the day we got another BFF album, and some of the interviews I've read suggest that it may not be the last either...

I'm going to append my own thoughts now that I've listened through it 3 times.  Both "Hold That Thought" and "Away While You Were Here" have greatly grown on me and I really enjoy them now.  "Thank You For Breaking My Heart" still doesn't do it for me, although I like the harmonies in the second half.  I think I'm just not a slow jazz ballad guy really.  Overall, I feel the album is great!  If I rated it on songs, I think 9/10 are awesome.  So 9/10 for a review!

I'm amazed at the lack of love for "Thank You For Breaking My Heart".  Beautiful track.

I haven't time to really listen to the album quite yet (just being in my dorm room with roommates), so I haven't really gotten around to hear the softer songs.

However, Draw A Crowd is so far my favorite from what I've listened to.
