New development on Wikipedia!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Folds#Crowd_Involvement

Folds once created rumors for his crowd to spread at a concert. One rumor involved Folds supposedly levitating on stage. The concertgoers all posted similar rumors online, and many believed the events occurred. Another involved Folds having his picture taken in a thong. Later Folds signed online and cleared up the rumors in a chat room.

At a Muncie, IN concert in April of 2006 Ben Folds started the rumor mill once again when he told fans in attendance to spread rumors about him lip-syncing the song "Kate", among others.

Fans happily obliged and began posting on internet message boards that in the midst of Folds's performance of "Kate", the song skipped and stopped, and Ben Folds jumped away from his piano "pretending" to dance with the music. The rumor continues that the crowd was infuriated and booed him off-stage. Finally, it was said that his bass player continued the show by playing several Hank Williams covers with the night's opening act, Chris Mills.

Looks here like it was a rumor.

Also! I am super stealthy.

This person (KareokeSupernova, who said they were at the show) said:
"No it happened, I don't know if he and chris just wanted to joke around or what, but it didn't go over well with the crowd. He started playing kate and then the cd stopped, his mouth and fingers were still moving, and then all at once he made a strange face, jumped up did a dance across the stage and walked off."

On the .com, rufu5 said:
"I was there too, it was in the middle of Kate, he just kind of sat there for a second, then jumped away from his piano (which was still playing) and danced around ... then just walked off stage. Luckly (or not so, depending on your view) Chris Mills came out and did some Hank Williams covers."

Stories are not straight, folks!

BEN DOES IT AGAIN!

Yeah, my respect for Ben took a big hit when I started reading this thread, but by the end it was back up even higher than before.

Yet another reason to see him live as many times as possible -- if only he would come to the west coast. . .
"He said, 'Well, I hate that it's come to this, but, baby I was doin' fine.  How do you think that I survived the other 25 before you?' "

I second that, greenie.
He came to Washington at the beginning of the tour, but nothing close enough for me to see him :'(

Oh Ben, you make me laugh. You know, he's probably out there on this little break in the tour laughing it up reading all these threads on the various communities, here, the org, the com, and his comments on his myspace. Lucky for me I didn't believe it for a second. Benjamin Scott Folds... you silly, silly man.

I like how the newbie still tried to convince people that it really happened, even after others confirmed it was a rumor.
