Prediction for Ben's Next Album: The Best Of...
« on: June 19, 2005, 11:04:42 AM »
Maybe it's been said before but I reckon Ben's next album release will be "the Best of". Not basing that on anything I've heard - purely the fact that, including Ben Folds Five releases,  he's had five studio albums now and has been going for about 10 years. That seems about right for a "Best Of" release.

I also wondered whether it could be something that happens later this year..... perhaps if Ben returns to the UK in December as rumoured it will be to support the release of a "Best of?" Just a thought.

Mm, is he "big enough" to get a Best Of... release? I'm not saying he isn't necessarily but hmm, seems like a cash-in thing which is never Ben's style. I wouldn't be too surprised though, given the recent re-release of WAEA.

Good lord, I hope not! Because that means one of two things:

1) He's getting out of the music business - well, in a writing, recording, releasing sense
-or-
2) He's doing that thing where you get a 'Best Of' before a band has broken up, which irritates the hell out of me. Does it mean that nothing they write/release afterwards will be any good?

My exact sentiments.
Not that confident about how long Ben'll keep at the releasing though...there's a few signs to suggest its not too far off. Actually, another tidbit from post-show Leicester meeting...he mentioned that he was actually keen to get back to the studio and record some more.

My predictions: two more albums, a best of (and hopefully a rarities boxed set ala the Cure), one more album, and then Ben becomes a full-time producer/studio musician.

There were four years between RTS and SFS, so let's factor in a few more EPs and producing jobs between albums.  Assuming that each album would take the same time to complete, we have approximately another decade and a half of Ben.  That would mean that he'd be in his late 50's by the time he stopped recording, or at least touring to support his recordings.

Then again, what the hell do I know?  ;)

Somehow I doubt that Ben will go into his 50s touring. Some idge of a feeling that full-time producer isn't that far off. Then again, what the hell do I know either?  ;) But more EPs, surely?

My new philosophy is that a crappy tape deck somewhere plays a greatest hits collection of strange and tender moments, lost, stranded, and forgotten. I'll meet you there.

To have in mind that a great musician will stop touring and recording is a relly sad thing, specially when you relalize that the music industry rejects good musicians constantly accepting crap instead...

this is just waiting to be brought up in this thread so because im bored i will. what would be on a ben folds best of including the five? most best ofs are pretty big so ill go for 17 tracks. in no particular order (this should prove to be a hell of a lot easier than the all star album)
1. one angry dwarf
2. zak and sara
3. best imitation of myself
4. not the same
5. emaline
6. battle of who could care less
7. brick
8. rockin' the suburbs
9 landed
10. jesusland
11. philosophy
12. all you cna eat
13. there's always somone cooler than you
14. evaporated
15. army
16. don't change your plans
17. song for the dumped

threw in a few e.p. trakcs for good measure. criticise this list if you will, they arent necessarily my fav tracks, its just my guess for what would be included

If Ben releases a 'best of' album, I think it will be more to do with Sony than him. I seriously can't stand best ofs, because it's usually all the singles, and a couple of album tracks, chosen by the record company, is it not?.....and besides - don't most of us here already own all or the large majority of his work anyway?

One thing I would really like to see though, as mentioned by zinefiend, is a rarities boxed set. But no godd*mn Best Of!

Just my two cents. Or pennies.

lord no, please, we don't need more live releases. He's absolutley brilliant live but the Tower EP, the "Ben Folds Live" CD and the Ben Folds Five Sessions at West 45th should be enough, plus the vast collection of bootlegs that has swarmed the net.

As for the Best Of issue, I agree with the above post that the record companies take care of the playlist and it's almost always just purely singles. Forget that, if you want a mastered Ben Folds list you know more then the record company, download your favourites (or rip them from your CD's) and burn a compilation of your own.

The solo live CD I got's but can't find the West 45th sessions I cannae find anywhere in the UK.  I don't think another quality live CD could hurt...
