That's unfortunate.  Maybe he's performing as part of an elaborate joke.

Disagree entirely.

Maybe he's performing to support an administration that supports funding for the arts instead of decimating same.  Maybe he's performing to support an administration that's trying to help all of us instead of the top echelon.

General Board / Twas TEN years ago tonight
« on: December 09, 2011, 08:24:47 AM »
The Bowery Ballroom. A Sunday night in NYC. A show that was not originally part of Ben's 2001 RTS tour. A show that really was a substitute for the 9/13 show at Irving Plaza that got canceled because of 9/11.

There was no band. Just Ben and his piano. And the first crowd horn sections.

And amongst the crowd that night were the Bowery Bandit and Greyseal. Who were taping. And who began putting that show up on the interwebs for fans to share.

The recording was so good that Ben himself requested a hard copy be sent to him down in Oz where he was germinating the ideas that became the 2002 Ben Folds and a Piano tour.

Which led to the release of Ben Folds Live.

In many ways, Ben's career pivoted that cold evening in the City.

And as hard as it is to imagine, it happened 10 years ago tonight.

s I said that Ben doesn't really have any well known Christmassy songs.

I can think of at least two.  Whether they would have fit on this EP?

David - will they do an elimination on the 21st? I wonder. Cause if the 28th is the live finale? Last year the finale had four groups, didn't it? says that the episode on the 21st is titled "America Votes" and describes the top four groups as competing.

Not entirely helpful, so I went to the craptastic NBC website that not only takes forever to load but then has conflicts with settings where I try to click on a link to win tickets to the Live Finale.  Thinking of course that might mention WHEN said finale was to take place.  NOPE.  No such luck.

Maybe Allison should tweet Ben and ask him.

For a second, I wondered how I had gotten into someone's marketing plan.  :P

Shut the f*ck up??

If I'm not mistaken, that's from the 9/21/01 show at the House of Blues in New Orleans where there was a group of obnoxious attendees behind/to the right of Ben that would not shut up. He started telling a story, kept getting interrupted, kept restarting the story and then finally broke into a short song.

At least that's what I remember happening when we were there that night.

Surprised Afro-Blue was bottom-two'd, I thought that was a good performance -- maybe it was sort of a wake-up call to not get too complacent or something ?

Not necessarily bottom-two'd.  As in most contests like this, the host says things like "the first group that is safe" which isn't the same thing as saying "the group that finished first".  I think the only thing that is certain is that whoever gets eliminated was last.  The ordering of the surviving groups?  Don't think we know.

Also. Anyone else at any of these recordings?

Houston Warehouse Live in October 2008 for Long Tall Texan

I have a few bootlegs that I was just going though (including an old radio performance) where he does Cigarette.

Screws up every time. The least screwy-uppy one was when he was with the Houston Symphony Orchestra (don't get excited, he played it solo~A

Twas there that night with my wife and kids.  Turned to my daughter and told her she had just heard Fred Jones Part I.

Album Board / Re: Alternative 'Vault' track ordering

We're mostly music nerds here - why not go all "High Fidelity" and post up your own ordering for the Vault tracks? Chronological, autobiographical, The order you saw them in live - or just whatever sounds good.

Not alphabetical. God damn.

Why the f*ck not?  At least for listing purposes on the website for downloading.  Especially for those of us who only want some of the vault.

What's your alternative?

I wish the songs were arranged in some means besides alphabetically. Do them chronologically or clumping demos, b-sides, and live songs.

Just a thought, but maybe they're listed alphabetically so that if you're buying by the track, you only need to find the right place in the alphabet.
