General Board / Re: Evaporated
« on: June 01, 2006, 09:33:15 AM »
Evaporated has been in my top five Ben tracks for months. Quite frequently I'll list it as number one, that is, if I was forced to make a list (nooo, don't make me do it!)

And I have to agree on the vote of Unothorized being the best album. Whatever is a great album, but TUBORM has got more depth in it I think. The versitility between the two albums is also amazing.

I'm hoping discounts at least. And more presents are always welcome, I say.

All I've got to say is that this DVD blows WASO and Sessions out of the water.
And makes me feel like a moron for not knowing about Ben before the year 2005.
I wish I could go back in time and see these guys live together... BUUTTT NOOO...
Life sucks. Ha.

My friend Brooke is in a Ben Folds Five cover band called Sven Holds Jive.
Check their stuff out at
They just got started, so it's rather funny.

I've gotten the magazine (which was good, because it was out last year, before I knew of Ben), a membership card, an autoraphed picture. And you get pre-pre sale tickets. That is, tickets before the regular presale. That's what did it for me.
I'm supposed to be getting "another bonus gift (possibly an EP)" as the letter puts it. And as there is rumor to EPs coming out after the Aussie tour, I'm more than okay with that! Because that's supposed to be signed too.
That and the newsletters are cute. And another email address to send questions too, they actually respond and all that, so it's cool for that.

no one wants to hear mess again.

what do mean "again"? when does he EVER play it. he always does OAD. Mess is one of the best songs (in my opinion of course), so its a blessing when he plays it.

I almost crapped myself when he started playing it. He introduced it as; "since I've played so many shows up here recently, I'll play something I haven't played in a long time. I hope I don't f*ck it up. If I f*ck it up it's because I love you."
And then those notes came out. And I screamed. And then proceeded to sing along and do the back ups when needed.

And thanks about the pictures. I've been closer before. That is, at a place without a barrier. There was a small barrier there. It's one of those things, once you've gotten the best seat you don't want to give it up. And I refuse to, if I can help it. I'm selfish. I know... but being able to see his hands fly across the piano is amazing. Especially when he's less than four feet away. Oh. Jeez.

It was my fourth encounter with the Man. Well, like talking to him afterwards. Seventh show. Good times.

Jared said something about being back in the studio in the fall, and that's why there aren't tour dates then. I'm all for it! I need more music to memorize...

Plus, he'll probably be back at Summerfest as well, right?

That's a negative. We asked him.
Actually. Jared said what's on the site is it for 2006.

Got to the Summerfest Grounds at 10:30 AM. Other people didn't show up til noon, 12:30ish. I love being a BenFreak though. And, I think I should get a sticker for being CRAZY.

The new stage is nice. It was ridiculous trying to get in there though. I was there first and then didn't get first dibs on seats, but we ended up dead on to the stool front row anyways. Suckers who don't know any better about where the piano will be.

The first cover band wasn't bad. Actually, rather okay.

Second one was HIGH-larious. Every freaking song was "for the ladies". haha. And some crazy ass outfits too. Oh, God. Anyways.

So, Brandon, techie extraordinare, (the one with the green jacket, that he didn't have on today, and I was confused, DONT MESS WITH MY NORMS!!!), took forever getting the instruments ready. And all the instruments weren't the regulars. Ben played on a Steinway instead of the typical Baldwin, Lindz' drums were a different color, and so was Jared's bass. First time happening for me to not see Ben on that beloved Baldwin.

1. Theme from Dr Pyser
I'd never seen Pyser, so when they came out and started playing it, I was already aware it was going to be a good night.
2. Gone
3. Bastard
4. Jesusland
5. All U Can Eat
6. Trusted
7. Annie Waits
8. Still Fighting It
9. Bitches Ain't Shit
10. Brick
11. Fred Jones part II
12. Mess
(I think I just about crapped myself when he started this. He told us that since he's played so many gigs in the area recently he was going to play something he hadn't played in a while. And yay, made me a very happy person, thought I'd never have the chance of seeing this one live... Brooke and I just kinda screamed at each other when he started playing this. Because we'd been talking about it this afternoon waiting in line, how we'll NEVER see it. And then, tada! Here it is!)
Band Back:
13. Army
(He just stopped conducting at some point, and was just smiling because we were all doing it already.)
14. Zak and Sara
15. Landed
16. Not the Same
(AHH YAY! He split the crowd half and half and did the knee thing. I wanted to see that. And now I have.)

So 16 songs, really not all that bad.

Oh, and video of Mess Live, by Flowerofsilver off of the LJ community, she and I were right next to each other at the show:

It's pretty big, 52MB. But feel free to download it.

1. What was the first BF/F song you ever heard?
Brick was familiar, but I don't remember it. I have distinct memories of being introduced by my now ex to "Cooler than You" but I'm not sure if that's the first...
2. In what order did you obtain the BF/F CDs you own?
RtS, SfS (same day)
EPs (same/next day)
3. When was the first time you saw BF/F live?
July 2005
4. How many times have you seen BF/F live?
6, soon to be 7
5. Most recent show?
Milwaukee 3/12/06
6. Other bands or musicians you love
7. Do you have a Ben related website?
No. But I'm a frequenter of many. Unless you count my myspace, which is kind of a shrine, or my lj icon account, which is mainly Ben Folds icons.
8. Favorite member of the five including Ben?
Ben. I haven't had interaction with Darren or Robert...... but Darren clearly steals all my love. He always has that one genius statement, and then goes back to being the peaceful observer.
9. Favorite member of Ben's touring band excluding Ben?
How am I supposed to choose between Lindz and Jared? They're both awesome guys.
10. Have you ever met Ben/had something signed by Ben? How many times?
Heh, YES. I've met him thrice. And a lot is signed, after one show he wouldn't stop. I felt guilty, almost, walking away with that much... but hey, not complaining!
11. Did you contribute to Crystal's pressie to Ben?
12. Where did you grow up? Where do you live?
Milwaukee, WI Suburb, which is where I live when not at school. When at school I'm in podunk, Iowa.
13. What do you do? (student, profession)
College Student
14. Farthest you've ever travelled to see BF/F?
306 miles.
15. How long have you been a BF/F fan?
Almost a year now. I'm slow.
16. Is Ben or BFF your favorite musician/band, or one of many?
Yes. Favorite.
17. Five of your favorite BF/F songs
Five of my favorites? I just tried to make a list of 30 and that failed. Anyways. Evaporated, SFI, Gone, Video and Wandering
18. Males: You want to be Ben, true or false.
Females: You want to be Frally, true or false.

Female, but no, I'd rather have Ben's skills. Though. Actually, I think out of the family, I'd want to be Gracie. She's got to have a rocking life.
19. Your favorite B/FF song at this very moment. ONLY ONE. We all know it could change at any second.
20. Working on a theory here. Did/do your high school activities include marching band or cheerleading? Any others you care to mention?
No, to marching band. and Hell no to cheerleeding. However, I was really active in mentoring things.
21. What did you/are you/will you study in college?
I'm a Religion major and French minor
22. Single? Attached? Married? Kids?
Single. no kids. I am a kid.
23. If you could have dinner with a character from a BF/F song, who would it be?
Interesting question... I've been really sympathetic to Alice Childress recently...
24. Why did you choose your screen name? If it's your real name, why did you prefer to use it?
It's a Harry Potter reference. And I'm crazy about that too.
25. Too many questions in this list or not enough?
As I'm really bored right now... I could venture to say not enough.

Ben's Old Five / Re: My thoughts on the Five
« on: April 14, 2006, 10:09:33 PM »
I too am on the "too late" bandwagon. I've only known of Ben since July 2005. I know, a real youngin. Granted, I'm 20, but there was no way I would have had any idea who they were back when I was in middle school, it was all about Backstreet Boys and other crappy music then.

I also feel as if I've missed something magical, but the six concerts I've been to of Ben's have been amazing, however, being as new to the Folds world as I am, I've also never seen Ben completely solo. I'm post-Silverman era, as crazy as that may sound to some of you, I really would pay money up the wazoo to see just Ben and his piano. Jared and Lindz rock, but there's just something special about the solo section of a gig, and he's so much more un-scripted then. No particular set list to follow and the such. Meh, musings for things I'll never see... unless Jared and Lindz fall ill some day, and I just happen to be at the concert. And I really don't want that either.

Drat. It's gone off of Ebay, should have thought of that earlier... is someone still seeding?

I found another copy of it from a different seller on Ebay, who also seems to be a respectable person, so I just bought it. Hope it comes soon, so I can enjoy it's goodness.

Wow! Nice job! I was actually convinced it was some silly thing Ben fooled me!

Agreed, almost sad not to hear that it was a silly stunt of Ben's.

She doesn't have the webspace to keep it up that long. Sorry guys. Hopefully speedy'll put it up on the Rarehouse soon. If you want me to send you tracks, I can do that on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, they're on my computer at school, and I am not there... So, um, yeah. Let me know what you want, and I can send as much as your inbox'll hold. I unfortuantely do not have webspace.... unless you think yousendit would be better?

Thrilled. I can't wait to see him again, who is glad that Folds loves Wisconsin? This is the 3rd time in a year he'll be in Milwaukee, and two Madison dates. Amazing. And it makes me so happy.

And the Summerfest Grounds concert on the 27th is FREE. Can it get any better?
