Title: Your Remixes!
Post by: Allison on February 11, 2009, 09:29:02 PM
Justin (jpar) messaged me on twitter to tell y'all two things.
One: Hi!
Two: Want to karaoke Way to Normal? He's gone and upped Instrumental versions of the 11 tracks off of S&S to WUWTL: http://wokeupwaytoolate.com/filedump/Way%20to%20Normal%20Fan%20Remixes/Way%20to%20Normal%20(Instrumental)/

Then, anyone do any yet?

If you post them, WUWTL will host them.

I will create a section of the site for putting up your remixes, voting on them and whatnot if there's enough interest.

Um....aren't those the Stem files from disk 1?  If so, aren't those official released material?  I can see the mp3 and wav copies being fair game, as they could count as remixes once they're in that format, and can't be re-remixed.  But I'm not sure about the AIF's.

Edit: I don't really know if I know what I'm talking about here.  Does anyone know what the licensing/digital copyrights are for something that's meant to be fan-mixed and shared like this?  (Other than not profiting of course)

You know, I didn't even notice/look at the file extensions. When he told me he upped them. I'll fix that. Thanks.

Aren't .AIF files just another audio format? I don't think they *can* contain the individual stems...

Well no matter what the .mp3 format you posted, Andy, is a far more universal format. (and it can't be undone).

Sorry to cause a panic.  I know that garageband can produce lossless aiff files with additional info encoded into them, but after thinking, I'm not sure if they retain any mixable elements.  I tried to amend my first post to say that I might be completely off base, but there were roughly 7 minutes between my post and Allison's response.  My bad. :(

I have no remixes per se to offer, but I have a different track order to offer... I was inspired by somebody, I can't remember whom, who said that the whole album would be totally different if it started with "Cologne":

1. Cologne
2. Errant Dog
3. Kylie
4. Dr. Yang
5. Effington
6. Frown Song
7. Hiroshima
8. BWN
9. Brainwashed
10. Free Coffee
11. YDKM

I've only given it one listen through this way so far, but I really enjoy this. I'm on my second listen through now.

On topic:

The Stems are on a data disc (DVD), and contain all tracks from the original album, including seperate 'Cologne' and 'Before Cologne'.
The individual tracks are saved as .aif files, which can be natively loaded into the free program Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) that we are recommending for those without Garageband. Just drag-drop the tracks in (I recommend copying them onto your hard drive first as it'll make it all a LOT faster) and they'll line up side by side (tracks with a delayed start have enough silence at the start so they line up)

NOTE: Go for the latest stable version of Audacity (1.2.6) and NOT the Beta version (1.3.7) as the beta version seems to crash when I load more than 6 tracks at once.

For immediate fun, drag them all in to a project, press play, then use the 'solo' and 'mute' buttons on the far left of any individual track to see how it was all recorded and layered.

Hope that helps some folks!

I've been f*cking around with the stems of the sessions and doing my own little tweaks.
First little project was Free Coffee. I took the distortion off the piano and cleaned it all up a little, adding a few small things to make it a bit more interesting.

Free Coffee (Remix): http://acelze.googlepages.com/ACFC.mp3

I'll work on the other songs when I find the time. If there's anything that sticks out about the original recordings that you really want to change or just get rid of, let me know and I'll put my spin on it.

Stuff it, I've done it anyway.

Try here (4.7Mb) (http://wokeupwaytoolate.com/filedump/Way%20to%20Normal%20Fan%20Remixes/sasgarageband.zip)

It's just basically screen shots so you can set your generic program up the same way it is in GarageBand. If I can provide any other info, let me know.

(Screenshots are probably copyright Apple Inc. GarageBand is probably a trademark of Apple Inc. A lawyer could probably think of an inventive way of claiming that seeing the soundwave on screen is Ben's copyright.)

I'll second that comment! I think I've spent 4 hours today playing with Free Coffee. None have that studio distorted piano (Piano 1) in the...what do you call them 'Stems'? Yeah I just keep (Piano 1) muted the whole time. 'Piano 2 Clear' and 'Piano 2 Distorted' are where it's at...Yeah just dump Piano 1.

We finally got this today... I can't begin to describe how privileged I feel to have raw audio of a Ben album to mess with.... sort of feels like I
have a copy of the master tapes in a way. It's just so nice to hear things dry, without compression or effects.

Could be just me, but the piano track under Regina sounds exactly the same as the main piano track... is it? I wonder why that was done. Maybe they don't want too many fake Regina's out there? :)

Here's Brainwascht. My main priority was to bring the piano out of the storm of distortion. The fuzz bass was just too much, so I cut the overdubs in half and kept it to one bass track, bg vox, piano, and drums.

I think it's a little bit quieter than the one mixed into the piano, so you might want to up the volume a teeny bit. Let me know if you use it!

I played around with all the songs last night and came to a conclusion. Just a simple Piano/Bass/Drum/Lead vocal mix would be stellar for ALL songs. Drop the "room" vocals, the synths, the extra crap, and it's very old school, very crisp and clear Ben Folds. YDKM sounds very nice without Regina and the second piano track, and Hiroshima sounds almost normal without the echos and the audience.

I might make MP3's of what I liked and up them to WUWTL.

Vocal-only files float around the P2P networks - especially, uh, that one with the blue bird/pterodactyl as the logo. I forgot what it's called.

People who mashup get files from there ('a capella' for vocal only, 'instrumental' or 'karaoke' often turns up vocal-less originals), or if you'd rather go the legal route then mashup-friendly artists will often release vinyls with vocal-only tracks on it.

However, if you're after obscure songs, then you might be out of luck.

This wasn't an attempt to make an extreme or creative mix, but a good one. ;)

What I didn't like about the "official versions" which I attempted to fix:
-That stupid popcorn drum-like effect done on the piano.
-The eq job on the bass (Eq'ing distorted bass drives me batty...)
-Over processing of the vocals.
-Overly wet drum part.
-The mastering job.  Audio files shall not be rectangles!

I'd appreciate some feedback.  I've been working on this from 7pm to 3:30am. My ears are tired.

By the way, do these tracks have BPMs associated with them?

I look forward to looking through this 7 page topic tomorrow when I have some sleep.  The couple of mixes I listened to sounded really cool :)

It's nice, the drums are much better, and it's nice to hear some of the lower down detail come through, although I'm starting to think that it just doesn't sound right without the messed up piano on it. This could, however, just be me.
By the way, do these tracks have BPMs associated with them?

So much awesomeness around right now! However, why is noone commenting on this one?

Very nice - and I like the '4-3-2-1' vocal processing. Very in-keeping with the message of the song, though I'd consider having it 'clean' song after the "you'll be waking up".

Interesting layering you've done - sort of taking the idea Ben was doing with all the pianos and applying it throughout.

Nice work (and that goes for everyone posting up their tracks).

Could be just me, but the piano track under Regina sounds exactly the same as the main piano track... is it? I wonder why that was done. Maybe they don't want too many fake Regina's out there? :)
I was wondering about that too (Regina's vocals mixed with piano so it can't be isolated out. Your theory seems reasonable to me.

Well, I don't know the reason for having it mixed in, but because I'm such a nice guy I've uploaded a Regina-only part to wokeup for y'all

http://www.wokeupwaytoolate.com/filedump/Way%20to%20Normal%20Fan%20Remixes/extra/Regina_Stereo.aif

I think it's a little bit quieter than the one mixed into the piano, so you might want to up the volume a teeny bit. Let me know if you use it!

~A

Thanks for putting that Regina only file out. Allows much more flexibility when playing around with YDKM now that Regina's vocals are separated from the Piano. I haven't really made any mixes yet...I've just been dorking out playing with the Mixes on a 2nd PC while doing other 'Work' on another.

Stripped down to the essential Piano/Bass/Drum format (sometimes with a little extra thrown in), this remix captures the essence of what a Ben Folds album used to be. Or should be. Could be? Raw. Basic. Awesome.

BTW editing Free Coffee SUCKED. Someone better appreciate the hard work I put into it, even though I gave up and just threw some shit in the beginning. I'm not all that familiar with Audacity, nor did I have a bunch of time (about 3 hours to mix, save, and give each song a listening to after encoding as an MP3) to work on them all to the point of perfection. I'm sure I could do better, but I like how they came out.

This was my first attempt at remixing and not everything lines up. I'll probably go back to it and clean it up if I ever get better at doing this.

I like the idea behind this - and it takes a good mind to reimagine songs that you've no doubt heard time-and-time again. Once I've heard an arrangement or recording I find it very different to stray, even if I'm actually playing the music myself.

Speaking of stripped down, I remade the whole CD into a solo CD a la Ben Folds Live... Now I just have to figure out where/how I should put it up... if anyone's interested, that is. I made artwork for it too... I call it Way to Normal (Ben Plays the Entire Album All By Himself).  :D

P.S. I know I haven't posted in ages, sorry etc., I've been reading the whole time but haven't really gotten around to actually logging in for... 6 months or so?  :P

Thank you, sir! I did try making a song with completely different lyrics, sampled from other songs. The one verse I completed went:

"Ex-wives and children/Please-leave-me-alone/They're at my door/Here in Cologne"

But I gave up on that pretty quickly and did the "Why the f*ck would you want me back?" thing instead. I'm listening to it now and feel that it lacks any real pace, though... Hopefully someone more good at this editing lark could take a little inspiration from this and do a decent mix.

Your Dog Is A Gay Homosexual (http://www.sendspace.com/file/gayhbp)

Pretty much just Errant Dog with a few South Park soundbites thrown in. I tried to make it built up a bit by bringing in each instrument individually, though I'm not sure it's so noticable. The only other major difference is that I added another "I don't know why I put up with this shit" bit...

In the spirit of the Beatles' "Let it Be... Naked" I present you with my remix of the WTN album, "Way To Naked"

This is so awesome! But I hate having albums sit in my iTunes without cover art, so I threw this together from a photo I found on flickr.

http://wokeupwaytoolate.com/filedump/Way%20to%20Normal%20Fan%20Remixes/Way%20to%20Naked%20(Benfolio%20Remix)/
Is there a naked track order, or is it the same as Way to Normal?

I refrained from sticking to any kind of order, and didn't number the tracks. I'm leaving it up to the downloader to put them where he/she wants them to go.

Post-nakedmodern.  I nakedlike it.  And I'm naked.

it needs a thicker beat, me thinks. the orchestration and the piano are great, but see if you can add in some drums or something.

other than that, i pretty much love it.

To anyone with garageband - Do the BPMs change mid-song in some of them? Bitch Went Nuts doesn't seem a constant 119 to me (which I got from kingrikk's garageband screengrabs).

only a handful of the songs were recorded with a metronome. some go all over the place. i attempted to splice brainwascht's drumbeat slowed down in with ydnm and after a while it started getting ahead of itself.

I'm not sure how I feel about this yet.
It's a work in progress. But lemme tell you, I've been dreaming of combining these two songs since the first time I heard You Don't Know Me with Regina. (except that i totally took her out of the song, and added in some Panda Bear).

Here's my take on Free Coffee.
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?miylqmwleyj

I call it: Free Coffee (Live Studio)(Solo With Band)

I added drums and bass to the live solo version from the apple store bootleg. It's nothing close to perfect. The drums don't line up very great on the first chorus but the last chorus turned out quite nicely, I think.

I think it's ok for my first attempt at remixing. Please tell me what you think.

(I hope that link works. I literally had no idea what I was doing. ???)

Linked worked fine!

Great idea - I see what you mean about the timing issues. To fix it you could try splitting it into chunks. Some audio software has pretty good speedup/slowdown filters which - if applied subtly (which is all this would need) - can be almost invisible.

On another note, I reckon someone could transcribe/record the piano part from that bootleg and mix it in with the bass, drums and vocal lead to make a 'clean' version. Again, it's something I'd do if I wasn't already busy on my own crackpot remix.

Nice one Aaron!

So I'm working on doing the whole album, slighly remixing things, altering some things, changing some things.

It's a real shame the stems aren't clean master tracks as I could spend a lot more time and effort on them, but as it is, this is all we have.  However, it's given me (I feel) a better feel of why the album was the way it was originally, unless its the way they've made these stems or what but when you have drum tracks bleeding onto piano tracks because of the recording method, I feel something is drastically wrong, hence why my version of Cologne still has (very quiet) drums (I wanted to remove them altogether), because they've bled over into the main piano track.

Generally I've upped the piano in a lot of the mixes as I feel at times it's very buried in the mix.  Also I'd like to reccomend people listen on headphones as I feel you can hear some of the more subtle edits and changes that way.

So, some tracks from my version of the album :

01 - The Bitch Went Nuts
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1JBQU2TC
Fundamentally I've just tweaked the mix, making it build to what I feel is a massive final chorus, earning it's place as track one on the album.  I've also added an effect to the bass which I feel gives the track a more bombastic, large sound.

02 - Dr Yang
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=25TPSW2U
Again, a tweaked mix, some effects added here and there

03 - The Frown Song
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=P88BAOF5
Removed some tracks completely, wanted it to feel more organic and natural.  Effected the backing vocals as well to make it sound a bit less sparse.

04 - Free Coffee
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MXGMKZNX
Altered the general mix, again gone for a fairly large sounding final chorus.  Not a lot to work with on this track in my opinion.

Man that is too funny! Nintendo definitely comes to mind!

There's a reason it sounds very 'Nintendo' - it was programmed using a NES sound chip emulator (the excellent Famitracker). Apart from the vocals this would play through a NES no problem. I didn't use any samples, so the music section of the song is only about 21k in size.

Vocal-less version is here (http://www.wokeupwaytoolate.com/filedump/Way%20to%20Normal%20Fan%20Remixes/Andy%20Smith%20-%20The%20Bits%20Went%20Nutz%20(instrumental).mp3)

im greatly impressed. I got the stems and still dont knwo what to do with them.

Might I say The Bits went Nuts is simply delightfull, i Also have the Beck GameBoy Variations (Hell Yes Remix) - EP and it just all takes me BACK. I just want to make a Megaman 10 with this as the tune and the end guy being Piano Man, and he'd throw Piano Stools at you. It will never be done (by me.)

Oh and kudos [did i use that right? WTH does kudos even mean, like are we talking the candy bar(if someone corrects me to say kudos is a granola bar, i dont care what the effing box says, its a candy bar!)] to the guy who created the Disco Brainwashed. It sounds GREAT in my car.

these are so good they HAVE to be fattening!

P.P.S ( i knwo i never had a first P.S.) I took the instramental Bits Went Nuts and took out the swearing by adding the vocals back in, WHY WAS THAT SO HARD?! The lyrics didnt quite syncronize. You odnt have to answer. You shoudl hate me just for edditing it.

Ben doesn't sing at a constant 120BPM, that's why.
I did think of doing a 'clean' edit. Being of moderate British reserve the 'C' word does jarr a bit for me.

GOOD LUCK MEL! Mixing in Shatner is a great idea and I look forward to hearing the result!

PS: As a few people were interested in how my tune was programmed, I put up a youtube vid of the tracking program scrolling away: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkLLyO_SBhw
First two columns are used for tune, third for bass, and fourth for percussion. I have to use one of the square channels for the crunchy bass at the end.

Hey everyone,

I've had a go at mixing the real and fake versions of cologne. I always wanted a version with the strings and the choir  ;D

An idea that crossed my mind, and you've done it brilliantly! Can we have a higher quality (192kbps) MP3 please? It'll probably be too big to attach to the board, so throw it in an email and I'll upload it to wokeup for everyone.

The end really put me in mind of Sigur Ros, which I'd never though about Cologne before, but it does have some elements of the 'Ros about it.

it is 'it's coming up'.

why is this such a good song? really i mean it, i'm loving this new drum beat i can almost hear congo's behind it.

or a bigger congo drum part in the back ground in my head is what i meant.

I'm mixing these thru Logic Studio.  I just have a huge database of loops and such.  I never heard "It's Coming Up" but I would guess, if it is, in fact, the same loop in that song, they got it from the same place i did.

Ah ... gotcha.

That's a combination of 2 things.

1.  I played electric guitar on it.  It's me sliding my pick up against the string.  I had tons of delay on the guitar so it sorta squeaked in tempo
2.  I copied Darren Jesse saying "I was never cool in school" from Underground

Glad you noticed!

I haven't had the chance to mess around in Garageband with these tracks yet, but I've been following this thread...a lot of these mixes are brilliant, especially the Naked mix and the Ben-only mix.  I burned my own version of WtN mostly using tracks from these two, a couple from the Seeds disc, and the fake songs...and it's ordered like so:

1. Effington (Drew's solo mix)
2. Way to Normal
3. Dr. Yang (Seeds disc...I like the bass in your face...though the official WtN mix has too much)
4. The Frown Song (Benfolio's naked mix)
5. Bitch Went Nutz
6. Hiroshima (Benfolio's naked mix)
7. Lovesick Diagnostician
8. Free Coffee Town
9. Errant Dog (Benfolio's naked mix)
10. You Don't Know Me (Drew's solo mix)
11. Bitch Went Nuts (Drew's solo mix)
12. Free Coffee (Benfolio's naked mix)
13. Brainwascht (Benfolio's naked mix)
14. Brainwashed
15. Frowne Song (Feeble Anthem)
16. Kylie From Connecticut (Drew's solo mix)
17. Cologne (Piano Orchestra...no other version compares imo...the solo mix comes close, but I can still hear the drums and it annoys me)

This is definitely replacing WtN in my CD changer.

well that's the nature of the beast with how ben recorded this. many of the tracks were recorded at the same time but not completely separated from one another so the bleed constantly into one another.

Makes me think the album was rushed.  Did they really decide it was best to record the drums in a NON-sound-proof room?  :-\

The bass bleeds onto the piano on Errant dog as well.

ben did say that Herring only gave them a certain number of chances to get it right.  even if ben didn't like the "final cut", they went with it.

It works well on the album, or if you put it together with piano/bass/drums/vocals, but I just HAD to cut the drums out of Cologne. Big fan of the DVD version, sorry.

If I did it over again I'd try and mute the drums, make them not so drummachine-y, something. Or..... cut Ben's vocals...... yeeeahhhhh.....

Wow.

Settle down.

Just asked.

I never listened to anyone elses remixes until the imeem site went up, just thought that was odd that we both did the same thing to the piano in the first verse.

i'm just saying, if you're going to make a big stink about in on two separate threads, be prepared for me to come on the defensive in full force. yeah, so we did the same thing to the piano in the first verse. a lot of people have done that, actually. the clean piano tends to sound better than the treble mess in ben's version.

*whistles*

This thread is lacking a messed up techno remix. I have come here to resolve this problem and I'm saying I'm sorry in advance. Forty seconds in it gets kinda cool, though. It samples The Frown Song and my vast royalty free loops and samples collection. It kinda sounds like one of those songs you'd hear playing DanceDance Revolution.

It's called The Guru.

I don't really know why I'm sharing this but my dad thinks it's funny. It's not really a remix because I only changed one word and added some of Ben's strange vocal noises at the beginning and end. The one word I changed is very noticable but I'm not going to tell what it is so you're just going to have to suffer through a Ben Folds song to find out...
