Title: a 'best of' in the making??
Post by: pano on June 07, 2006, 04:47:33 AM
heya!

just spotted this entry in the .org's knowledge base:

06/05/2006 - Epic Records, a division of Sony BMG Music Entertainment, proudly announces the release of the first-ever Ben Folds hits collection, "The Greatest."

Spanning all of Folds' impressive post-Ben Folds Five catalogue, the special edition package will contain the acerbic pianoman's biggest anthems, including "Landed," "Rockin' the Suburbs," and "Rockin' the Suburbs," as well as some rare and classic material. The retrospective disc also features two previously unreleased track, "Hold On, Hold On"--a bluesy ballad dedicated to the memory of Folds' father-in-law--and "Steve the Intellectual Hick," a witty, jangly, and hilarious track reminiscient of Folds' most witty and charming work with Ben Folds Five.

"The Greatest" will be available from August 29, 2006.

Tracklist, Ben Folds' "The Greatest":

Rockin' the Suburbs
Steve the Intellectual Hick (Previously Unreleased)

Hey pano, thanks for sharing the news.  I agree with you the tracklist does seem a bit strange...

I predicted a best of a year ago....

....although i thought it would span his recording career to date, not just post five. Interesting to see if it materialises. And yes, strange track listing.

Weird they're releasing a Greatest CD after only 2 "real" studio albums...

don't get your hopes up. Someone made this up on the .org I think, and then decided to abuse what the knowledge base was originally intended for.

I'm pretty sure this is bullshit; I mean, what a weird tracklist. You'd expect RTS, Landed, SFI, TASCTY and The Luckiest, but only at a push would the other songs merit release on a best-of (maybe one or two would make it on out of that bunch, they're not bad songs, but I doubt you could call 'em "Best-of" material - "Get your hands off of my woman", for example, isn't even a Folds song, it's a cover, and I'm sure you'll agree Ben has a other covers that would be far more suitable - "Bitches ain't shit"? "Inbetween Days"?).

A better tracklist might include songs that Ben plays live a lot (I assume he plays them live a lot because he thinks they're his best songs, maybe? Otherwise he'd play the above list a lot...) rather than such random tracks. I'd presume something like (I'm taking 6 from each album here, 4 from the EPs, a Shatner track and 2 B-sides):

Rockin' the Suburbs
Still Fighting It
Zak and Sara (how can that NOT be on a best-of?)
Not the same
The Luckiest
Fred Jones, part 2
Landed
Jesusland
Bastard
Trusted
Late
Time
In Between Days
There's always someone cooler than you
All u can eat
Kalamazoo
That's me trying (Shatner)
Bitches ain't shit
Hiro's song

Bundle in a few unreleased trinkets and you got yerself a best-of.

Also, that cover art on the .org (cough)FAKE(cough).

If this turns out to be genuine, I'll eat my words, but won't be happy - Ben could do a much better best-of than this...

don't know how I feel about this yet.  could be true or not...the remastered extras were sort of random, too, though I suppose they make more sense.  I don't know, I'd probably buy it just because I only own about half of these songs.  but...hrm, yeah most of these are not his greatest.

?

What an awful idea. Why make a "Greatest" compilation after two albums and some EP's? Anyone concerned with buying the "greatest" Ben Folds songs would do just as well to buy all of his solo stuff.

If it's true, I'm a little disappointed. I'm hoping it's not.

Its not true! The guy on the .org said it came from a guys site, yet other people said it wasn't there. Ben still has many many more good songs to produce. Its silly doing a best of when you can still make music.

Hey, this got me quoted on the .org. I think they took my sarcasm a little too seriously. I'll learn how to use it one day.

He SO doesn't need a greatest hits. Although we'd probably all go buy it if he did ::)

I think a "Best-of" would be a good idea. I know if I wanna check out a band, I buy their best-of/singles collection first (if they have one) so I can tell if they're shit or not, because if a band's "best-of" is subpar, chances are the rest of their stuff will suck too. It could certainly attract some new fans, if nothing else, and hopefully it'd have new, unreleased tracks for we elite. When I make CDs for my friends I style them like "Best-ofs", usually filling them with the band's singles, because the CD is likely then to have something for them. A Ben best-of, however, would need to include the work of the Five, too, and I'd see it featuring all of the singles, plus a few others;

Underground
Jackson Cannery
Where's Summer B.?
Sports and wine
Uncle Walter
Philosophy
OAD
Brick
Kate
BOWCCL
SFTD
Army
DCYP
RTS
SFI
Air
Landed
Jesusland

That's 18 songs there already. You could probably cut out a few of the singles based on their overall popularity. You could also add a Shatner track (though it'd probably be best if it was "In love") and some from the EPs, etc.

Haha. I took one of my sisters to a Ben show last October, so to prepare her for it I made an "Essential Ben" CD which has now become a three disc set. "Essential Ben 1" is a mix of what you're likely to hear at a gig. And this is when I'd only been to one show, so it's not really all that accurate anymore. It's got some BF5 tracks in it as well. Then "Essential Ben 2" is just solo Ben songs that are great that weren't on the first CD. Then the third CD is "Ben Folds Five Hits (Or what should have been)" which is 19 (79 minutes total) Ben Folds Five songs that weren't on the first CD either (meaning things like Brick and Best Imitation are on the first CD). It's hard. And it's hard to say goodbye to tracks that won't fit.

A "Best of" I see unlikely coming from Ben, at least in any time soon. He's too underground I think to get a "Best Of" CD, at this point. And definately a Best Of would need Five tracks, it couldn't not.

Yeah, I agree that a Ben Folds "Best Of" would have to feature Five stuff too. You can't have a solo material only release - which is partly why that track listing was so strange. I still think that ten years and five albums in, plus the EPs and all the other stuff he's done, it's time to expect a Best Of release  in comparison to the trend of how these things normally work with artists. I may be showing my age here but I remember Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits referring to their first "best of" album as their "contractual obligation album".
