Also just realized that my wife, daughter, son and I were at the show where Long Tall Texan was recorded.  I must have missed that detail while previously perusing the track listings.

I also like the booklet with Ben's liner notes on all the songs.  More straightforward on most than he has previously been.

Mine just arrived while at lunch.  Put the Live disc in first and I'm glad to have some CD quality versions of a lot of the stuff we've heard over the years on boots.

Though truth be told, greyseal's recording of the Bowery show sounds better than the Selfless recording on disc 2.

So, anyway, I'm going to go back to the lurker depths I just dredged myself up from, but thought I'd just say hi.

J...still watching you

Hello James.  Long time...

Very surprised that Sonos is gone so soon.  I have heard their J5 before on xm50 and last night's version was a pale comparison to what they are capable of.  But based on the critiques, it was not surprising to see them go.  Also, that probably made the producers happy since Barellies and they had worked together before and now they don't have the conflict of interest.

The old guys did a great job last night.  And are much better than last season's old guys, who really were just a support group for the one lead singer.

I look forward to their merging of the two "halves" of the season into a single show.  Perhaps next week now that we are down to 10?

I've heard the 3CD release. I don't want to elaborate on what I mean by a different spin on songs, because I want you guys to experience it without my opinions clouding your perceptions. Happy to discuss in-depth when y'all have had a chance to digest 'em next week.

Andy, you're getting all Kenny Jaworski on us there.  :P

Now there's a name I haven't heard for a while. Remember his altercation with Morry?

Anyway, not sure I get the reference?

My reference was to the fact that when the RtS tracks were leaking, Kenny had heard them all but felt he had to wait until the actual release date to be able to comment on them since he didn't want to spoil people's reaction.  Even though the only people whose reaction he might have been spoiling were not yet on the board as the rest of us had heard the tracks as well.

Which does make it a slightly different scenario, but still was the genesis of the reference.

Also, I would seriously appreciate it if it arrived a day early. not much time to listen to it on Tuesday.

Unlikely since Monday is a federal holiday.

Sounds like the co-host had no idea who he was so just blurted out whatever the research intern managed to Google.

~A

Nah, I think Hoda had a pretty good idea of who Ben is.  The hour had been rotating through the SingOff folks as co-hosts and last Friday was Ben's turn.

Pretty clear to me to that the production guy set KLG and Betty White up with the Pirate joke and Ben played it perfectly with his little head shake.

Looks like you can buy them individually in the US but they're "Album only" in the UK.

Ah, good! I was beginning to worry that the UK wasn't getting screwed on this.

How much are individual tracks?

~A

Range from $0.99 to $1.29 with the vast majority at .99

I feel like Ben phoned it in on this one.  If you're going to make a 55 song collection solely made for supposed die-hards, why the hell do you rehash previously released material and use songs that are easily available on the internet?  It's like he just got the setlist by picking songs off of WUWTL.  There's about 5 songs I haven't heard in any form before and half of those are from Over the Hedge, which I don't really find interesting.  The high quality versions of some of the stuff will be nice but I was really looking for new material and maybe even some pre-Majosha/BFF stuff.

Not sure how much "new" material there really is for him to put in the vault in the first place. Also not sure how much they/he were doing any live recording until the 02 solo shows, so we're left with a lot of the boots.

But at least the page that I clicked over to has each song available for an individual download so if you wanted the Mitch Easter session songs, you could pay for those and only those.

Maybe I'm a lone wolf on this, but I think he's delivered a pretty decent collection of stuff between the 3 CDs and the Vault.  It's not like he's forcing anyone to buy it.

While ordering my copy of the Retrospective, I saw this in the info:

"Along with the 3 CD expanded edition, fans will be given an individual code redeemable for the “Free Folds Five” EP from the Ben Folds '55' Vault (55 ultra-rarities available for purchase in selected territories* exclusively on the site).

Free Folds Five EP Includes:
Underground (Demo 1992)
Stevens Last Night In Town (Demo 1994)
Song For The Dumped (Demo 1994)
Narcolepsy (with Ben Folds Five) (Recorded live on 11/21/1999, Brussels, Belgium)
Dr. Yang (Recorded live on 11/23/2008, Leuven, Belgium)"

So if those 5 are part of the 55, I think it is likely to be demos and live versions of songs we already know about as opposed to anything new.

So, excited as I am for these three CDs and the reunion and all, I keep coming back to the FIFTY-FIVE "vault" songs we're going to have access to as well.

Seriously, 55 unreleased pieces of work? Yes, I'm sure we've heard at least a few of them, but holy crap! \m/

Hope I'm wrong, but I would be very surprised if any of the 55 tracks are what would truly be considered an "unreleased piece of work."  I think they are more likely to be other live versions of BF/F songs, covers and demos.
