Tour Board / Re: thursday in LA show

No, I didn't go to San Diego.  And yes, the tickets were expensive.  Luckily I have the advantage of several mental tricks which allow me to justify such things.  If you buy your tickets early enough and possess the right mindset, by the time the show comes around it's almost like it's free!  Also, since my partner in crime doesn't like the ben, I figure I'm saving $50 by not buying him a ticket... might as well spend that money and take in his share of the concert too.

General Board / The Chemicals are Wearing Off (or, hey there)
« on: August 21, 2005, 12:03:46 PM »
Hey everyone!

I see some old, familiar faces around here.  Warm and fuzzy feelings all around.  There are also lots of new folks, which is good.  Life and message boards go on, I guess.

I just thought since I dropped in from outer space I should acknowledge my random entry and mysterious departure.  Hi!!  I can't say why exactly I stopped coming to the boards... shit got busy I guess.  I still love this place and I still love Ben, I just can't go thinking about it 24 hours a day anymore, which I suppose is a good thing. "Not that there is anything wrong with that!"

So, let's see... what has happened? Well, the biggest thing I guess is that I am a married woman now.  Bet you never thought that would happen.  PFF and I tied the knot in a beautiful wedding last April after a mere 10 years of courtship.  Marriage is great.  Our daily lives have not changed, but said 10 year courtship pretty much prepared us for growing old together.  And my beautiful shiny ring acts like a disco ball when the light is right.  We are still in LA, and he is finding a lot more steady work these days.

I wish I had 2 and a half years of good gossip, but basically I'm just the same.  Older, but I don't look it yet.  Mouths drop when I mention my age, and I'm just now at the point where I'm not insulted at how old everyone thought I was.  Ben still rocks my word, but I am less consumed with it.  I forget to preorder stuff, I don't chase bootlegs, I still get all the article alerts, but only guiltily file them away and force the thoughts about my fallen website to the back of my mind.  That said, I still HAVE to go to both shows every time Ben comes to LA.  I can't skip one.  Two shows are better than one!

Anyway, hi everybody.  I miss you guys.

JBJ

I refused to pay.  I think I am growing up.  So I will stay tuned here to see why I should be jealous in the future.  For now, I'm cool... membership card? signed photo? signed something I already have? I'm ok, I swear.  It's crap I don't need.  (Yeah, I still kind of want it just because.  But... no, sorry.  Fandom is free.)

I've had fleeting thoughts that Jesusland sounded a bit like Stan, but not nearly as similar as Stan and Mess are to one another.  But I know nothing about music, so I'll have to believe you folks on why.

Parts of Bastard make me want to start singing Cold As Ice.

Barry Zito and Alyssa Milano (who are apparently dating?) were at one of the LA shows in October.

You send it says I've clicked on an invalid link. :-(  I really want I've Landed.  I've got You To Thank, but the I've Landed I've got is only a verse long.

Thanks for trying.  :)

I haven't heard the album, but I heard the same 4-5 songs two nights in a row at the LA shows in October.  I didn't think I would buy the album, but now I think I'll get it eventually.  103.1 in LA (new "indie" station) plays Common People all the time... I actually really like it. Doesn't disturb me at all, probably because I've never heard the original, and I'm so impressed with Joe Jackson.

It's taken years, but I've converted my immediate family.  I've bought them CDs, made mixes, and dragged my brother to shows.  (It just so happens I sometimes need to visit my brother when Ben just happens to be in DC.)  I thought they were just humoring me, but I've got evidence they've seen the light:

- During Ben's LA show in October, I called my Mom during Army (her favorite), and she listened in for an hour, all the way through Shatner
- My brother last week brought up my obsession to my uncle and proceeded to explain Ben in glowing terms
- With the four of us and my fiance piled into the Suburban at Thanksgiving, my dad pressed play on the CD player, and RTS started... when it ended, he turned off the CD player.

Some people cannot be converted, though.  I think that car ride was the only time my fiance has listened to Ben in a couple of years, and if my entire family hadn't been enjoying it, he would have quickly put an end to it.

General Board / Ben, Shatner's hero

I know I've neglected my website for the longest time, but I am still lazily collecting articles with the intent of one day updating it...

Thought you guys might enjoy this snippet from an article about William Shatner:

People are throwing around the words "critically praised" when they talk about the new album. Your collaborator Ben Folds deserves a lot of credit, I would imagine.

He's my new best friend. He's a musical genius. I would present him with the words and he would start to devise something. I'm not quite sure how it works. He would find a melody that fitted and then a style, and the style was different for each song. Our families have gotten close, and I really care a great deal about him.

A new hero?

He is a hero -- Ben's my hero.
