General Board / back up (sort of)
« on: March 09, 2003, 01:46:53 AM »

Well, as you may or may not have noticed, has been down for a few days.  I hope the server will be back up soon (meaning both Greyseal's site and mine would be back); in the meantime, I've pointed the domain over to angelfire where you can view the news page (the most recent articles).  I updated it with new articles tonight, so head on over.

General Board / Ben Sighting???
« on: May 22, 2003, 06:45:46 AM »
I thought I saw Ben driving in Santa Monica (LA) on Tuesday. Well, I looked over at the car on the right of me and got just the briefest glimpse of a man kinda moving to music or singing or whatever and right then traffic starting moving... but for this split second I really thought it was Ben. It was a white Passat (Santa Monica plates, but could be rented) with a baby screen in the window and a carseat/small child in the back.

Was it real or my imagination? I couldn't remember if he was supposed to be playing somewhere, but I don't think until later this week?

At that point I had about 20 blocks to go before I had to turn, but the traffic flow was certainly not working to my advantage. I eventually got in front of him but my back windshield was so dirty I couldn't see anything! Then I had to make my turn, and I really didn't want to be a stalker so I reluctantly went on my merry way. (Speaking of stalking, the alleged Ben continued Eastbound on Colorado.)

Dammit! Celebrity sighting or crazy hallucination?

~JBJ, crossposting

PS - I have never imagined seeing Ben before, if this helps, and I am not prone to "he looks like Ben" syndrome.

General Board / Is this merchandise new?
« on: June 16, 2003, 03:39:36 AM »
I just checked out the .com merchandise page after not having done so in a long while... and I noticed they have all this Ben Folds Live stuff I never knew about.  There's a black long sleeved T with the cover on it, a white T with Ben's face and a piano, and a new once-again-aqua babydoll with a stick piano and ben's signature, and it says Ben Folds Live over one sleeve. I want that.

But please, can we have a babydoll that is not aqua?  White? Gray? Something, anything.  Maybe a regular T-shirt in Medium or heaven forbid Small? Why am I limited to aqua?

July 3: Ben plays a new song in concert
July 7:
  • 10am: I get an email from greyseal imploring me to download said song
  • 10 minutes later: I convince a coworker, with the extremely rare blessing of having an internet connection that is not monitored by HR and whose job responsibility is to burn CDs, to download the track for me
  • Several hours later: I find out the download timed out at 70% and act cool and casual until he decides to try again
  • 3:30pm: A CD is handed to me
  • 5:30pm: I listen to the song for the first time on my way home from work.

July 11: I have memorized the entire song like the freak that I am. I read a note from Ben saying he wrote it "a week ago."

Talk about turn-around.  Granted, we don't know when he wrote the note, but... do you see my point?  I love the internet age.

Yay kwasnice, yay Calgar99 and greseal for bringing this to you. Yay me for hosting it. No yay capped upload bandwidth. No yay annoying eletronic alarm clocks which utilize "human wake system" (the noise it emenates will wake any dogs within in a 5 mile radius as well). Anyway, don't mind my idiocy, just come and get these SHNs:

Sorry it's not a nice website like you're used to, but this is the way us apathetic folk do it. High quality VBR MP3s being uploaded now... But I may fall asleep again and not give you a URL for a few hours. Until then, worship at the altar of lossless audio compression...

General Board / EP News for our fair foreign friends

From the armchair:

Is there anyway for those of us outside the US to get our hands on the ep without forking out US dollars

Frank Maynard wrote:
Yes -- very soon.  Ben's Australian site will be able to sell the EP directly to fans in Aus.  It was supposed to launch simultaneously with the US site but it didn't due to a glitch at the label.  Ditto for the UK and Japan sites.  I'll post more info if I get it, and links will be at

General Board / Guess the song! (.org clone thread)

They are playing this at the .org, and I thought, hey why can't we play too?

I'll give a word from a ben song.  The next person names the song, and gives another word from another song. And it goes on like this.

The word is...

General Board / Converts!
« on: August 08, 2003, 03:18:13 AM »
My 1400th post was almost about how in retrospect my slam book questions weren't all that timeless.  Who knew it'd be around a year and a half later?

Anyway, my 1400th post is not about that.  It's actually about this great story I have about hot dogs.  I used to not like them, and then one day, I did.

Okay, my 1400th post isn't really about the hot dog story I stole from Annie after she told it five times.

No, this post is not about that.  This post is about ben-converts.  A coworker whom I don't know very well -- a man in another department -- overhead me talking about the show while getting my Monday morning coffee, and he exclaimed, "My wife and daughter went to that show on Friday!  They went for Tori, but my wife can not stop talking about this Ben Folds!"  Twice later in the day we crossed paths again, and he wanted to talk more about Ben.  I swear I was not the one who brought it up!  I asked him what his wife liked so much, and he went on with enthusiasm about her enthusiam about Ben's enthusiasm, recounting the story about Korn and Spin Magazine, how she loved Ben's heart and that he was not a sell out. I told him if they ever had any questions to ask & that I had live stuff, etc.  This was actually what brought me out of my post-concert-post-Annie-visit-funk and encouraged me to think instead about what a great show it was.  And just when I was about to march to the other side of the building and inform this man that I was making the family a CD, HE approached me and requested some sort of "greatest hits" mix.

So I spent my Monday night making a I-swear-this-is-not-a-greatest-hits-just-some-good-songs-of-many intro to bf/f mix.  I presented it to him the next morning, and just about to launch into a diatribe -- but holding back -- when he said, "Now you have to explain to me the story behind this."  I told him that this was in no way a greatest hits CD because it would make me cry to think of what was not on it because it would be like choosing between my children, but here are 19 songs, a little from each album.

The result remains to be seen, but I was still pretty happy in general about the whole idea of converts.

Anyhow...  it's also funny to note that while I swore my fave album was Ben Folds Live, and forced at gunpoint I might choose Ben Folds Five... when I sat down to make a list of songs from each album that "should" be on it, I actually, halfway paying attention, listed all 12 songs on WAEA.  Go figure.

Here's to converts, to Annie being the 2nd greatest writer in the history of mankind, and to 1400 posts.  How the hell did that happen?

Ever fill one of these out in school? I used to make really, really thick ones (imagine me getting carried away with an idea, huh) and pass them around school. I wonder what ever happened to them - doesn't seem like the kind of thing I would have thrown away.

Anyway... copy the text below and paste into a post with your answers.  Like you had something more important to do.  Once again, I am outwardly encouraging all lurkers to participate! (We are not mean people; we will only tar and feather you if you're a total A-hole.)

1. What was the first BF/F song you ever heard?
2. In what order did you obtain the BF/F CDs you own?
3. When was the first time you saw BF/F live?
4. How many times have you seen BF/F live?
5. Most recent show?
6. Other bands or musicians you love
7. Do you have a Ben related website?
8. Favorite member of the five including Ben?
9. Favorite member of Ben's touring band excluding Ben?
10. Have you ever met Ben/had something signed by Ben? How many times?
11. Did you contribute to Crystal's pressie to Ben?
12. Where did you grow up? Where do you live?
13. What do you do? (student, profession)
14. Farthest you've ever travelled to see BF/F?
15. How long have you been a BF/F fan?
16. Is Ben or BFF your favorite musician/band, or one of many?
17. Five of your favorite BF/F songs
18. Males: You want to be Ben, true or false.
Females: You want to be Frally, true or false.
19. Your favorite B/FF song at this very moment. ONLY ONE. We all know it could change at any second.
20. Working on a theory here. Did/do your high school activities include marching band or cheerleading? Any others you care to mention?
21. What did you/are you/will you study in college?
22. Single? Attached? Married? Kids?
23. If you could have dinner with a character from a BF/F song, who would it be?
24. Why did you choose your screen name? If it's your real name, why did you prefer to use it?
25. Too many questions in this list or not enough?

News / LiveDaily Interview

I'm not sure how we missed this, but LiveDaily had an interview with Ben back in November.  It's a pretty good interview with some original questions and involved answers from Ben.  There's at least one thing I don't think any of us knew...

I've added this, an interview with Robert, and 8 other articles to!
