General Board / The Ben Fold's Five?
« on: January 30, 2002, 02:40:00 AM »
I know, I know, there is no THE in Ben Folds Five.  However, many people who review Ben do not know this... or apparently much of anything.  ;)

I've been scouring all of the articles in my archive to provide you with a complete list of all the misinformation and other fun stuff found within.

- Were you ever confused by an article that said BFF broke up in 1999... or 2001?
- Were you ever annoyed by a writer who invented a name for a song?
- Have you ever wondered exactly how many times Billy Joel's name is used when describing Ben's music?

If so, you're gonna love this:

General Board / Benvivor 2 Sign Ups
« on: February 18, 2002, 09:50:45 PM »
Ok, it's that time again! Remember Benvivor, the Ben trivia game that drove you to psychological counseling last month? Well, it's back by persistent though not necessarily prevalent demand.

So, I, your host, and Andy, the winner of Benvivor I, are joining forces to give it another go.  The goal is to start the competition by next Monday, February 25... coincidentally, the same day Ben's new tour starts.   :D

So sign up below if you want to play.  Please note the following first:

1) You must register to the site so we can communicate via private message.
2) Please make sure the email address in your profile is one you will check regularly.
3) To play the game, you'll need to be able to check the boards/your email and respond to questions at least once in a twenty four hour period.

I also want to pose a question... is 24 hours enough time? With all the upcoming concerts, is a longer time limit needed? Like 48 hours? Please let me know what you think!

Oh yeah, the prize. I'm open to suggestion, but I do have a CD of live BFF material that Greyseal generously made for me. Includes some improv such as "Rachel," "Robert's Shirt," and "Cybernet."

General Board / The Simpsons and Related Ramblings

I thought we might move this discussion (found on page six of the "Musicians Here" thread on the Transcription board) here.

Blah. I like the Simpsons. Blah.

General Board / T-Shirt for Ben?
« on: February 26, 2002, 03:54:26 PM »
Greyseal or Andy (sorry, not sure which) had an idea that those of going to the Anaheim or LA shows (since there will be at least three regular posters there) should give Ben a Suburbs T-shirt.  More specifically, we should give him the "Piano Playin' assh*le" T-shirt.

Is anyone into the idea of contributing some money to buy the shirt... say one US dollar?

If so, we can do it all through paypal... Anyone?  :D

General Board / Everybody's Reading, but Nobody's Posting

Where's the fun in that?

General Board / In Charge
« on: March 15, 2002, 03:17:24 PM »
My boss is in Hawaii.  He told me yesterday, "You're in charge. If anything happens, you handle it.  You and [project manager]. Nobody else."

Soooo... what should I do with this newfound power? A staff meeting on the beach? A mandatory Ben-Folds-listening party? Martini lunches? Overtime for surfing the internet? What's it gonna be folks?  ;)

General Board / Benvivor 2 Politics
« on: February 25, 2002, 01:01:30 AM »
This is the place to comment on the game... players and observers alike are welcome.  Plot, brag, gossip, and politic to be spared from the vote.

General Board / Benvivor 2 Challenges - Dr. Boni wins!!
« on: February 24, 2002, 10:46:01 PM »
This thread is for official Benvivor business: rules, questions, results, etc...

1. ROUNDS - The game will consist of rounds, typically made up of three questions each.  The questions will be posted by me in this thread.

2. SUBMITTING ANSWERS - Each player will have 48 hours to submit their answers to the questions.  Always refer to the timestamp on the message in which I posted the questions to figure out when your 48 hours are up.  (See instructions I sent via email for adjusting the clock to your local time.)  Submissions should be sent to me via private message on this site.

3. MINIMUM CORRECT - A player must get at least one answer correct each round in order to progress to the next round.  Any player who gets zero answers correct (or fails to submit their answers on time) will be eliminated.

4. IMMUNITY - A player must get all of the answers correct to receive immunity for the next round; a player with immunity may not be eliminated from the game by voting.  Any player who does not receive immunity will be be placed on a list of players who are “up for the vote” during the next round – one of these players will be eliminated from the game based upon votes by the other players.

5. RESULTS - When the time is up, I will post the results of that round and the questions for the next round.  (This will be at approximately the same time the previous round was posted, but if I am waiting for last minute answers, the next round may get a little later each time because it takes a while to compile and report the results.)

6. VOTING AND ELIMINATION – I will post a list of players who did not receive immunity at the end of each round.  During the next round, each player MUST vote for one of these people to be eliminated from the game.  (See conditions on voting and elimination below.) Failing to vote will count as one incorrect answer.

Note: During the last game we encountered several situations which called for decisions to be made and new rules to be formed.  These were situations which could not be dealt with by the existing rules.  (For instance, if only one person was up for the vote.)  As I expect such situations will arise again, you should expect new rules to be announced as necessary.  I will be fair and consistent as always.  If at any time during the game you disagree with a decision that has been made (whether it is regarding a rule or a judgement on your responses), I would appreciate it if you message me privately.  I am always open to your suggestions… I will be a lot more open if you are not complaining and criticizing me in public.  8)

Conditions on Voting and Elimination:
- If only one person is up for the vote, obviously there is no voting.  However, this individual can save him/herself by getting immunity in the next round.  Please note this does not apply when more than one person is up for the vote.  For instance, if three players are up the vote, and Player is A is voted out, Player A is eliminated regardless of the number of answers they have correct in that round.
- In the case of a tie in voting, the tie will be broken in the following manner: a) The player with the least number correct in the round (in which voting took place) is eliminated, b) if still tied, the player with the least number correct thus far in the game is eliminated, c) if still tied, it will be decided by the time answers were submitted.  The player who submitted their answers the latest is eliminated, d) if still tied, Ben help us all.

Andy is helping by submitting questions and may, if necessary, post the questions and results if I am not available.  RESPECT THE QUIZMASTERS!!  ;)

Stay tuned for Round One...

General Board / Household Uses for Ben
« on: April 01, 2002, 05:19:16 PM »
I've discovered this week that a healthy Ben Folds addiction makes a good...

Alarm Clock... first time I've ever woken up early on a Saturday... at 7:15am! My eyes open, and my mind goes, "I'm seeing Ben today."

Diet... I definitely didn't need this one, but I fasted anyway.

Sleep-deprivation program... Didn't really need this one either, but by Friday afternoon I was substituting "setlist" for more useful words at work (Imagine the confused looks from my coworkers) and by Sunday AM I was giggling madly with Grey while typing and complimenting ourselves on our wit.

Drugs What I am experiencing today is a definite hangover. Except I didn't have one sip of alcohol all week.  Didn't need it.  No drugs either, but I sure was high on something.  Now I'm equally low. On Saturday at the HoB I got to be in a VERY bad mood at one point, spoiled by a great spot at previous shows, pissed at security and pretending-they-don't-speak-English-when-they-do-so-they-can-steal-your-spot-bit
ches alike... but when that opening music came on, ALL BETTER.  What's the word TIB? Benjection?

Can anybody else think of any household uses for Ben?

General Board / April Fools Follies
« on: April 02, 2002, 01:14:58 AM »
So most of us were duped. Bad.  ;D

Trying to console the guilt-ridden Andy, I started telling April Fools stories.  Anybody got any good ones?

Five or six years ago, my boyfriend and I were at Disneyworld for Spring Break on April 1st.  When we were in line for food, I pretended that I couldn't find our money... he was really freaking out though, so it only lasted about 10 seconds.  I don't think he appreciated it, and I haven't bothered to "celebrate" the holiday since.  :)

When I was seven, the victim was Jack.  Jack, the overly hyperactive kid from down the street.  Jack, who pounced on me and tried to kiss me when he was 5 and I was 6. Jack, who learned to ride his bike fast long before he learned to stop and who once rode directly into my back at an unimaginable speed. Sherry (another neighbor) and I made Jack some nice sweets of salteens and shaving cream. I seem to remember my mom helping, although I don't think any of us knew what would happen.  (Maybe my mom didn't know about the shaving cream part, I really don't remember.) So we brought Jack his "cookies," and as I recall, Jack was so excited he immediately ran into his house screaming, "MOM!! LOOK WHAT LAURA AND SHERRY BROUGHT ME!" before we could say, "April Fools!" We didn't know what to do, and we didn't do anything.  To this day, I don't know if Jack ate the cookies.  Nobody ever spoke of it again. I saw him a few years ago, though, and he didn't look like the shaving cream did him any harm.

General Board / It gets me real pissed off, it makes me wanna say
« on: March 29, 2002, 05:15:26 PM »

I just went to get my pictures developed.  One hour processing.  After lunch I went to pick them up, and I was informed that both rolls were COMPLETELY BLANK.

Nothing. Zip. Nada. I'd be Ok with my concert pictures from Wed not coming out, since they were from behind Ben and nothing particularly amazing BUT last night's were gonna be really awesome.  I had some panaramic pics of Ben and Neil playing... and tons of cool Ben pics... and a few from directly underneath him when he was conducting Not The Same. But the most disappointing thing of all is that on Wednesday night I got a pic with Ben... and one of me, Greyseal, and Ben...  ??? :-[ :'(

I am so sad right now. The woman at Sav-On tried to convince me that I brought in the wrong rolls of film, but that is just not possible.

~JBJ, pissed off but too polite

General Board / Elton John & Ben Folds... together!
« on: April 17, 2002, 10:54:26 PM »

First review from Australia!

Thank you to Rocket member Mike Sinkunas who sent us this report from the opening night of Elton's Australian tour:

"Hi - We have just returned from the master's first concert to a packed Adelaide audience at our Entertainment Centre - over 2 and half hours and he was still going strong.
The set list was (apologies if we missed one)
Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding
Bennie and the Jets
Someone Saved My Life Tonight
The Boy in the Red Shoes
Philadelphia Freedom
The Wasteland
Rocket man
I guess that's why they call it the Blues
I Want Love
This Train Don't Stop There Anymore
Take Me To the Pilot
Blue Eyes
Mona Lisa and Mad Hatters (part 1)
Your Song
Holiday Inn
Tiny Dancer
Original Sin
The Bitch is Back (with rocker and Adelaide resident Ben Folds)
I'm Still Standing
Crocodile Rock
Pinball Wizard
Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me
Candle in the Wind

What an uplifting concert! Elton was in stunning form both with his playing and in his vocals - so strong. Davey was magic and his mandolin work was fantastic. Nigel was outstanding as if he was never away and also Bob and Guy and John Mahon were great. Ben Folds with Elton - The Bitch is Back just brought the house down along with wonderful versions of Levon, Rocket Man and Take me to the Pilot.

Elton really enjoyed the new songs as did the crowd ! The other big news was Elton announcing that he intended coming back to Australia in 2003 doing the solo tour - our prayers have been answered!"

Whaddaya think of that?

General Board / How did you discover the suburbs?
« on: January 08, 2002, 01:12:29 AM »
This is Ben Folds Fan's addition to my little slam book.

So how did you happen upon this little site?

My story mirrors BFFan's.  In late may or maybe it was June - I can't remember and we'll never know given my profile issues - I was looking for a release date for Ben's album.  I visited Kyle's for the first time in a long time and followed a link that advertised lyrics to the new album!! In a state of shock, I travelled as fast as my PC would allow me to the URL that evetually became The Suburbs.  I was dancing in my seat, extremely giddy... then I nearly had a heart attack when I realized people were discussing the album.  They had heard it! ...the hell?!  I had to go to bed after downloading only one track from Audiogalaxy, but I sang Carrying Cathy all the next day.  And the rest is history... you can see why I'm so partial to this site, seeing as the others didn't come until later.  :)
