Ben's Old Five / Re: What exactly would you give for a BF5 reunion?
« on: April 11, 2008, 07:19:06 PM »
I've been to my fair share of BF5 and BF shows, but I gotta tell ya, up until this tour whenever Ben'd kick into an older tune, I'd really miss Darren and Robert. Don't get me wrong, I loved him solo, with the full band back in 01, and of course with L and J - but this tour has been the first time I've really felt like the older songs felt familiar. I think it's the way Sam plays. He feels like the missing element. This trio, Sam, Jared, and Ben, these guys have a chemistry which comes closer to the Five than anything else I've heard since they were together.

News / Re: New Album = August
« on: April 11, 2008, 01:25:34 PM »
Really once the band turns the album into the label, the machine takes over and the artists loses control over the release. I remember reading in SPIN ages ago that the album which would becomeReinhold Messner was supposed to be out "for the holidays," but then wound up coming out in April. Maybe they meant McDonald's day, Tax Day, Earth Day or something like that. Until Sony has it on the release calendar, I'd take street date speculation as just that.

All of that aside though, I'd expect August or September.  ;)

moshing to brick is just fun. :D next time i'm moshing to the luckiest.

Fun BF5 story! At the Sunflower Music Festival in 1997, the crowd was moshing to Missing the War, and Ben stopped at the end of the song and laughed at the crowd and asked them if they wanted something heavy, and then they played another ballad. It was hilarious. Also, my then girlfriend was kicked in the face by a mosher during One Angry Dwarf. I less than three moshing.

Yeah, I know that if I moved back to Lawrence, I'd suddenly remember the constant 100-dB bass lines that throb throughout the city all hours of the night.  I can still hum the melody of my downstairs neighbor's favorite bass line from 2001.

I used to live right across from the back entrance to The Bottleneck, so on nights when I wasn't there, the shows would keep me awake rattling my windows. But a central location for me is a must...

Sounds like you have a cool setup in Missouri with the obvious exception of the slave trade.  In Emporia, there are billboards—yes, more than one—that say "Accept the Lord as you Savior OR REGRET IT FOREVER."  I might be in a Stephen King novel.  Or a Ben Folds song.

Nothing gets folks willing to convert like a good old fashioned dose of  to convert like a good old fashioned dose of fear.

I don't know him really well, but from what I've seen, Dave is one of the most impressive people I've met in a long time.  In a genuine, unintentional kind of way, like he never really wanted to be awesome because it's too much responsibility, but he's fumbling his way through it anyway, figuring out how it works and making the best of it.  Very cool guy.
:o It's really eerie to read this, because it's almost exactly how he once described me, and totally how I feel about the man. It's refreshing to know someone who can make you smile just by thinking about them. There aren't many of those folks left it seems. Of course I could be jaded. I did have to take a drive through Jesusland last week, and my faith in humanity always gets a little shaken up by that.

We should probably be MySpace friends.

I second that motion!

Looks like you got a great set last night! I'd be willing to bet my Jackson Cannery 7" that the first song was Errant Dog. Out of curiosity, how many couples screamed "that's our song!" in unison as he broke out The Luckiest?  ;)

I've always felt like Lawrence was a nice place to visit, but I have no desire to live there again. This area of KC reminds me a little of the place I lived in TTown, only it's in Missouri, so it's a little more pro-slavery than I'm used to.

Dave's one of the best people I know. Talk about a real quality human being. And we do some killer karaoke...

I'm pretty excited to have an Eef set! Thanks for posting these! Anyone have them up on Rapidshare or a similar service? Dimeadozen says it's not accepting new members. I have the same problem at the local country club.

Welcome, jpar.  It sounds like you live pretty close to me.  I've lived all over the KC metro area and beyond (Bonner Springs, Mission, Lawrence, Topeka), but now I'm stuck in Emporia for graduate school.  I was just curious where you're at in this Kansas/Missouri conglomeration.

I'm over in the Waldo/Brookside area, still recovering from watching one intense game of basketball. I used to live in Topeka, I worked at the Capitol for a bit. It's a good town. I still head down there to see my best friend Dave as often as I can. Emporia is a... lovely city.  ;D

So, justin, how many years makes up your 50 shows? I'm intrigued. It's rare that I find someone who's been to more shows than I have been to - i hear of them in fairytales and the like.......

My first show was Feb 1 1996 at The Bottleneck in Lawrence, KS. I've been going ever since, to as many shows as possible. Moslty in Kansas and Missouri, but sometimes a trip East to visit family coincides with a show. What a coincidence. ;) I never set out to see Ben a bazillion times, it just sort of worked out that way.

So, how many bills of ben's do you think you've paid? And I know i've witnessed the crowd change in the last couple years, but i'm assuming you've been seeing ben for at least 10 years, is it different a lot now?

Only in that there are more of the same people going. You've got the die hards, the casual fans (Brickheads was the term thrown around quite a bit in the 90s), the folks who are just interested in seeing live music, and the pretentious asshats trying to be cooler than everyone around them. The KC show was full of those in the area directly behind me, more than I'd seen in a while at a Ben show. They were terribly rude to Eef (whom I adore), and there were several points when I couldn't even understand him because people were so damn loud. It was the exact behavior people complained about when Ben opened for John Mayer.

hey, justin.  you get a mention in this review.

Frank sent that link to me! I was misquoted. I actually said "Well, I'm a little biased because it's not often the man dedicates songs to me, so I have to put this show at number one." Really, I'd put it top 20. Springfield was a little better, but not by much. I think my favorite show would be the Granada in September of 97.

I know Justin!  I haven't seen him since October 6, 1999 when we went to Columbia, MO together.  Cool guy!

Kyle! It's been a long time! That was such a good show, too. What are you up to these days? I'm in KC working for Apple, which is nice. Did you catch the game last night?

Been so long since I posted here, I don't even have the old Yahoo address I registered with.
I'm Justin, and I'm a Ben-a-holic. Some might remember me by an old handle, darthjustin. I used it on the Armchair, the .org, and here.
I'm usually pretty quiet. I used to do a lot of stuff with the fan community, but as real life consumed me I stuck to collecting CDs, concerts, and going to shows. And last night, with Ben playing songs for me and getting to meet some great folks, I'm reminded once again why he's not only my favorite musician, but why his fans are some of the best around.
Gabe, it was nice to meet ya! Thanks for making fun of the losers behind us mocking Eef.
