Album Board / Best piano solo by Ben
« on: November 11, 2008, 04:36:13 AM »
Hi folks, this time it's quite a difficult poll. What's in your opinion his finest hour at the piano playing a solo? I didn't count intros, outros or little interludes to the poll, only specific solos in the particular song. So, I'm sorry if you're missing some songs.

I voted for OAD cause there's so much energy in this solo.

@Andy: sorry, I forgot Eddie Walker but I only took the album and EP songs into the poll...

I realized it too but I think the change of his voice can already clearly be heard on SUPER D (e.g. Adelaide, Kalamazoo) I liked his older voice more.

@jpar: Ben never sang that much through the nose like for example Chris Martin, so this won't be the reason for his changing voice.

Album Board / Best BEN FOLDS FIVE release?
« on: October 10, 2008, 05:13:07 AM »
Hi there,

another poll dealing with the BF5 releases. What's their best in your opinion.

I hardly couldn't decide between WAEA and TUBORM but WAEA made it in the end cause I love its rawness, energy and sadness.

Album Board / Best BEN FOLDS SOLO release?

Hi folks, time for a new poll. This time it deals with Ben's solo efforts. What's his best one in your opinion and why?

I guess my favourite is Songs For Silverman because I think it's his most mature one. I took some time til I got behind it but now I really love it, especially because of "Late" and "Prison Food".

Well, I must admit, after listening to "Way To Normal" about 5 times or so in the past 2 days I personally think it's a much weaker album than Silverman. None of the tracks except "Effington" and "Cologne" got me jumping around in my room happily. And Hiroshima is the weakest opening track of any Ben Folds/Ben Folds Five album.

Anyway, I like SFS much more than WTN.

Ben's Old Five / Re: BFF Reunion thoughts/hopes/predictions

I hope it's gonna be a tour cos I live in Germany and I WANNA SEE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm so happy and excited that they'll play together again. Guess it will bring tears of joy in my eyes seeing them live on one a dream come true :D

I didn't even dream that this reunion will happen in the next 10 years...but now Ben's playing at last with the two guys he should have been playing with the past 8 years or so...nothing against Jared, Sam or Lindsay but Darren and Robert are the only two persons I can imagine who musically fit perfectly well to Mr Folds music.

Let's dream on...Imagine a follow-up to "Messner"  :o

Anyway, I'm on cloud 9

You're right Chudley/Allison!

It's quite sad that nowadays Ben plays so little from the BFF catalogue, especially from the "Messner" album (except Army,Narcolepsy and Lullabye from time to time). But why? I remember that Ben once stated in an interview that "Reinhold Messner" is his favourite record. I'd love to hear DCYP, Magic or Redneck Past (okay, I would probably be disappointed to hear them without Darren and Rob...)

I was also wondering why they barely or almost never play stuff from the EPs except some regulars like All You Can Eat and Cooler Than You. What about Rockstar, Protection, Adelaide or even Wandering?  ??? ??? ???

That would mean that Ben's not in the mood for late Silverman stuff for more than 2 1/2 years  ???

It's kinda weird cause even stuff from the first BFF album gets more played than the last few tracks on Silverman. I think it's a shame that he doesn't do them anymore. But I wait in hope...

I saw Late and Prison Food only once in Berlin in June 05. I totally agree with you Chudley/Allison that he seemed to drop them out with the beginning of 2006.
I'd rather see Ben dropping some of the RTS stuff like Gone or Suburbs and adding the latter half of Silverman into his setlists again. That'd be great

General Board / Live absence of "Late" and "Prison Food"
« on: July 07, 2008, 06:11:24 AM »
I was just wondering why Ben dropped Late and Prison Food from his setlists. He hadn't played both songs for more than 2 years,I guess. But why? They are true gems in my opinion and especially Late would fit in current sets very well. Too bad that he doesn't them play anymore. I'm fine with Ben playing almost every song from RTS but I think he could put some more of the Silverman stuff into his shows (what about Sentimental Guy and Judy??) and A LOT more Ben Folds Five songs!!! :)

Any idea why he dropped Late and Prison Food  ???

Tour Board / Hamburg 30/7
« on: July 03, 2008, 10:46:45 AM »
Hi everyone, it seems that Hamburg was very much the same as Amsterdam, concerning the setlists. There was no solo set and THERE WAS NO ONE ANGRY DWARF!!!! >:(

Anyway the gig was great as usualand the guys had a lot of fun on stage though it was awesome hot in the "Grünspan". Here's an unordered setlist

Free Coffee
Errant Dog
Kylie from Connecticut
Bastard (without instrumental ending)
You To Thank
Bitches Ain't Shit
Annie Waits
Zak and Sara
Still Fighting It
Losing Lisa
Not the Same
Rockin' the Suburbs
Narcolepsy (about 8 or 9 minutes with great jazzy interludes)
Battle of Who Could Care Less
Hava Nagila!!!

I was so happy that he played BOWCCL and Underground. But I felt a bit sad because when he plays the old Ben Folds Five stuff I really miss Darren and Robert very much. Sam and Jared are okay but they can't compare to his old bandmates. Those BFF sings just don't have they same energy when they are played by Sam and Jared.

But I won't give up the hope that they'll reunite someday  :)

Album Board / Best Ben Folds solo B-side/rare song
« on: April 12, 2008, 02:43:58 AM »
Hey everyone,

what's your favourite non-album track/B-side/rare song by Ben Folds? I decided for "One Down", tho I prefer the live version a bit more. Which one do you like most?

Album Board / Best BF5 B-Side/"Rare" song
« on: April 12, 2008, 02:18:10 AM »
Hi folks,

this time you can choose your favourite B-Side/rare song from the good ol' Ben Folds Five. I didn't take the miscellaneous remixes and live versions of songs that already existed into the poll. So some songs you would have liked to choose may not appear here, sorry. I had a tough time choosing between "Jelly" and "For all the Pretty People" but I decided for the latter cause I love the chattings and escpecially pissed-off Mr Folds  ;D

PS: Oh no, I just realized that I forgot "Barrytown" and "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head". Shame on me...
