Tour Board / Town Hall, New York, NY - April 30, 2015

Very good show. Crowd was, overall, great, and the venue was perfect for this ensemble. Won't put a full review up, but here are some notable notes:

- No setlist, but based on what has been up on Setlist.fm the main set was very similar to the other nights in NYC. The encore was Rock This Bitch (which was surprisingly fantastic), Annie Waits, Still Fighting It, Army, and Not the Same.
- The infamous "Ain't Got No Words" now has words and (from what I see on Setlist.fm) is called "So There", and was the first song they all played together.
- Ben messed up the second song they all played together ("Long Way to Go"?) and did some on the spot rearranging, explaining how he cut the part out and then put it back in on the record so he confused himself. The moment broke the tension and the rest of the show was full of banter.
- Ben asked that no one post anything on YouTube so that people can hear the album as a whole instead of hearing versions online. Also said they just finished the album.
- Gave a back story to Cologne. The song now makes perfect sense.
- Darren Jessee was at the show, by himself, looking very Dylan-esque. Did not approach him, and the fans around him were courteous. He got a shoutout from Ben before Steven's, but did not perform.

Excited for this album, and based on this show, it should be pretty solid, if not unique.

Terp, were you there waiting near the bus?
No. I had to leave right after the show because I had to be up at 6 and live an hour away. However, the three guys from my old band, Zanzibar Scuf, were there and got a picture with Ben.

I don't know if they've been doing this at other shows, but they literally warmed up in the beginning. Both Michael Praytor and MTW were noticeably slower than normal. And then after that, things got back to normal. It was just a really weird vibe at the beginning.

Also Ben totally pointed at me (I was literally front and center) when I was rubbing my beard during "So smooth you can hear the beard."

General Board / Re: Similar Bands to Ben Folds Five
« on: October 07, 2012, 05:32:46 AM »
Don't forget The Semantics, which Ben helped form, but was never a part of. Their album Powerbill is one of the most hidden gems in music.

Also, Owsley, who was part of The Semantics (along with Millard Powers and Zak Starkey). His first album is amazing.

But as Allison said, no one else sounds like BF5. My band, Zanzibar Scuf, tried our damnedest, but we couldn't write like Ben, so we just became our own thing. I mean, every piano rock band that says "WE'RE LIKE BEN FOLDS FIVE!" sounds nothing like them, except there is a piano involved. And the reason is that no one writes like Ben (or at least like he used to), and no one has Robert Sledge as their bass player. His bass playing is unique and, as you can hear in TSOTLOTM, makes the band sound like they do.

Magic, live, this week
He's just using felt mallets on the toms and hitting a crash or ride cymbal. On the TUBORM tour and at the show in 2008 he had two timpanies.

Highly doubt he is touring with two timpanies. They definitely were not there at the Central Park show.

Yeah I was hoping for the actual tour shirt, but whatever. I'll probably wear this one much more since the back looks a lot better.

Got my stuff today. Was disappointed in the shirt, since it's essentially the same as the early access shirt I have except with "Reunion Tour 1986" on the back. Was surprised to see a signed insert inside, however, since I was positive I did not pay for that. Haven't checked my name on the massive list yet.

Question from someone fairly new to concert-going; where would they go if they were sticking around? The back of the building or something?

Find the bus/van. Also, if you get there early enough, scout out the venue and see where the backstage entrance is. Most importantly, be prepared to WAIT, possibly for an hour or two.

As much as it is annoying for hits/singles to be overplayed, "Landed" is easily his best non-RTS solo songs, so I have no problem with it. It probably helps that I haven't seen him like crazy over the past few years, but honestly, I really like the song.

Awesome. While I don't really want to hear his solo stuff, as I've said in another thread, I wouldn't mind it, as long as it was a GOOD song like Landed or RTS.

Just curious, since I didn't get mine today.  ???

I mean, I understand this, but at the same time, who actually knows if this will be the first of more tours to come or the last one ever? I'm sure by the end of the tour they will be feeling more comfortable and have more under their belt. I just don't see the need to be upset at ANYTHING when we should all be happy about the fact that this is even happening. I mean, I paid $125 for my ticket, and I have no regrets. Also, I don't understand the desire to hear Ben's solo work with them. They have 4+ album's worth of material to work with, there's no need to dip into his solo work, unless it was like Morgan Davis or Losing Lisa, or any other material they did with him previously.

I am with you completely. There seems to be a pretty down the middle divide about this. But, like you said, unless it's something that was a bf5 era song, I don't want people (who there are people who have no idea that they are going to a different show than they did last year, when Ben came to town last time) to not know that Darren and Robert are special. Not saying Sam and Jared and Lindsay and Ryan across the years aren't special. But... you know what I mean. They're the original guys from the beginning. There were people at the Five show in Chicago leaving complaining about not hearing The Luckiest. And I just wanted to walk up to them and smack 'em. But not every fan is crazy like me. Haaaa there's a few of us out there, but the average fan doesn't even join a message board so they can talk about the music nowadays....

Anyway. I am on the NO to Folds and Friends tour. Unless they dedicate time to Hotel Lights, Sledge Songs and then Solo Folds songs. But, that's what I'd need. Shit. I just need to hear Norina or All My assh*le Friends live. I NEED. But that's for a different thread and a different day. :)

Totally agree. I heard someone after the Central Park show say it was underwhelming, and I basically explained to her why it was, in fact, amazing.

7 or 8 times.  I've got, I think, 22 shows under my belt total.  I'm just looking at it from a value standpoint.  Ticket prices from last year to this year doubled for what's looking to be half the length of show...  That's a 400% increase.  Sorry, my thinking has been ruined by the business world.
