it wasn't the whole thing though.  just video of the performance, if i'm not mistaken.

Yep, the performance was not broadcasted live, and the only thing they played on the air was the audio portion from the video.

Did a recording of the show ever surface?

Nope.  The only stuff to see the light of day was the video linked above.  I was one of the few in the room for the show, and to my recollection, I didn't see anyone recording the audio (besides the radio station).   It's a shame, because it was quite a great experience!  :(

I linked the little bit of video I was able to grab on this thread:  http://www.thesuburbs.org.uk/Board/index.php?topic=5225.0

Tour Board / Re: Ben Folds Private Performance Dallas, TX 10/23/08

From the way Ben was talking yesterday, I was led to believe that it would be a new score as well.   The interviewer stated that many of Ben's songs possessed a Broadway style and asked Ben his thoughts on transitioning his music to the stage.  Ben said that this has been his intentions for quite sometime, everything was in line production wise, and all that was missing was the time to write it in the midst of his incessant touring.  I think there are a few other recent interviews with Ben that echo this sentiment as well.  :D

I'm a pretty avid long-time lurker around here and knew that they had been doing the Obama chants during Fair recently (so glad to see this song back in the setlist), so when the interviewer initially brought up Fair, I thought he was going to go that direction with his question.  Ben, Sam, and Jared exchanged a glance between each other like they too thought that the conversation was about to go their creative on stage endorsement, but the DJ seemed oblivious to their personal political leanings as of late.

I was very pleasantly suprised to walk in and see the other band guys there as well, although Tambo-Man's presence was sorely missed.  Jared on the guitar gave a nice sonic touch to some of the new tunes as well.   :)

The show audio and video was completely recorded by the radio station.  However, when looking on their website this moring, it seems that they took the video and chopped it down to a 5 minute long segment.  I was pretty disappointed about that!  You can find the video at http://www.kiddlive.com/video.asp.  Here's to hoping they'll add some more video later on.

A Ben Folds Storytellers would be delightful!  I'm thinking it might even merit another 'Burbian PSA...  ;D

Just thought I would share my amazing experience at a private performance with Ben and band yesterday morning in Dallas!  I won the chance to sit around the piano for an hour long interview and performance type thing for a radio morning show.  It was a great intimate setting with a living room type vibe and about 20 of us sitting around on couches and stools a couple of feet away from Ben.  Here's a brief recap of the stuff I found interesting  8)

-Ben of course was on piano, Jared on acoustic guitar, Sam was playing a snare drum and a bucket, and Andrew was playing a borrowed set of marraccas.  I'm usually a little bit critical of Sam and Jared's harmonies, but yesterday moring they were spot on and very strong!

-Ben talked about his performance at the Elton John AIDS benefit and how he faced the few hecklers disappointed that he wasn't Elton.  He mentioned that the songs were chosen for him, but in the process of learning them, he couldn't think of two songs that more perfectly suited him.  Ben also said that the producers of the Elton benefit were the same ones on board to produce his musical that will one day see the light of day.   He also played the first verse of This Song Has No Title... what I would have given to hear it in its entirety!  :)

-The radio DJ ( who is a huge fan) that was conducting the interview called Ben out on the "Ba Ba Ba's" at the beginning of Fair sounding like Obama chants.  Ben's reply to this was "Obama '96, ya'll".  Ben then proceeded to play the "Republican Version" and inserted "Socialist", "Bill Ayers, and then "Terrorist" in place of the Ba's.  Loved it!  ;D

-He talked about YDKM coming from a place of intimacy rather than resentment.  Instead of thinking as the song being more of a finger pointing accusation between man and woman signaling the decay of a relationship, Ben sees it more of an expression of a relationship that has reached a place of such honesty and personal integrety that they can admit to one another that there are parts of themselves that they don't share with one another.  There's new life in this recognition, and the couple realizes that in spite of the fact there are parts they don't know, it's not the end of the relationship.  Ben said that Regina's role in the song is not to be the accusational voice, but rather the voice of affirmation.  I think I appreciate this song a lot more now in light of this different dimension.

-Upon request of the DJ, Ben freakin' played Mess.... I'd always appreciated the song, but after yesterday, it's one of my favorites.  Wow.

All in all it was such a priceless opportunity to experience Ben in such an intimate setting.  I was a little disappointed he played mostly songs from the new album, but hearing Mess made up for it.  I'd still do about anything to hear Emaline live...

Here's some shakey video from yesterday:

Tour Board / 5th Row Center Left Aisle Ticket for BFF
« on: September 09, 2008, 06:26:41 PM »
I've been a long time lurker around here and just too shy to register.  Yes!  I am having to sell my ticket... :(   With such short notice, I could not get my frequent flier miles to cover my airfare (F**k Continental), and Texas to NC was a little too long of a drive for me.   :'(

The ticket is MF Center E 21  (5th row floor center on the left aisle).  More than anything, I really want the ticket to go to a huge fan who I know would enjoy the show as much as I would!

Edit:  The ticket has been sold!  :)

Thanks!
