General Board / Re: Fan mail

 did you try ?
No, I didn't. Is that real? (I'm a little more suspicious of you pulling my leg than maybe I should be...apparently on there's running injoke(??) where someone always mentions what appears to be another, unrelated members email address when someone asks about a fan mail address.
Do you have the Fan Club's address?

I do indeed, thanks. Does anyone know if an SASE might be a good idea, or not? I can't think of how it might be, but I don't wanna annoy Ben or the fanclub somehow. (Of course, I don't assume Ben necessarily wants to respond to fan mail, I just know a lot of artists want to, they simply don't have the time to.) Come to think of it, out of curiosity, has anyone ever gotten a response from fan mail to him?

Erm, common sense would tell me I should address it to "Ben Folds c/o" the Fan Club, eh? Slightly anal of me to be asking, I just don't want it to get lost.

Ben's Old Five / Re: My thoughts on the Five

Well, I got to thinking about this again a little while ago, though I didn't realize I was returning to a subject at the time; I'd actually forgotten I'd made this topic. Anyhow, I've been thinking: I've realized the thing that bothers me most about BFF"s breakup, as opposed to every band's; I emotionally (you know what I'm talking about; that wince feeling) regret their breakup more then many other bands, even the Beatles!, which defies all logic (sorry Ben, but it's true...), and I think I've figured out why: it simply seems as though they were on some sort of a mission, with a larger goal then just making music and rocking out. I don't know exactly what, although I'm leaning towards making piano an entirely legit punk rock instrument, but that's a feeling I've never gotten from any other band, ever. Something to think about.

Does Ben have a fan mail address? I think I read a mention of one in some fan club thing (I'm not a member), but I've yet to see an official one anywhere...apparently back in the days of the Five there was a P.O. Box? (At least according to a thread on Some people are convinced they have Ben's home address; I suppose I could send my letter there, but 1. that's not a known fact and 2. I'd like to not seem like a stalker, if you know what I mean!  In fact, scratch that; additionally, does Darren, Robert, Lindsey, etc. have a fan mail address?

Oh, cool, so he really did do a cover of it! I'll have to get that...someday...

Ahah! I know what it really is now! (Remember, this was over department store speakers) IT's "Doctor my eyes", by Jackson Browne. Classic, slightly infamous song, one that I had heard of both the music and title, but did not know they were one and the same. Go fig.

Ben's Old Five / Re: Tokyo show solo actually from released song?

This is where I blush, and actually bother to listen to SFTD, and notice that the solo in in the recorded version, and it's been a while since I've seen Sessions. Oh well.

Song for the dumped, aforementioned-ly from the 09-10-99 Tokyo live bootleg.

General Board / Ack! Confusing bonus stuff!

Okay, help me figure this out here: are they still making the Songs for Silverman DualDisc version? And if they are, is the deluxe DVD stuff the same as the DualDisc version, just on two DVDs, or is the the deluxe version different? Also, are they still printing Ben Folds Live with the extra bonus stuff?

Ben's Old Five / Tokyo show solo actually from released song?
« on: April 07, 2006, 08:43:50 PM »
In the live Tokyo SFTD on 09-10-99, at about 2:28 in, there's a quick piano solo, right after the light and "flourishy" jazz solo, in the song that is not in the studio version, nor typical, (if the Sessions performance is any indication), of the version played live. I'd write it off as yet another improvised genius solo by Mr. Folds, but it sounds very much like a released BFF, or BF song. I can't quite place it though. The sounds of it feels like it belongs in the RTS soundscape, but more then that, I can't say. Any body know, or I am just wanting this to be true?

P.S. By "studio version", I mean both the English version. It might be on the Japanese one, I don't have it.

Ben's Old Five / Re: My thoughts on the Five

I was lucky enough to catch them in the front row during the Messner tour.  It's probably the most fun I've had at a concert, but they weren't exactly happy up there.

What exactly do you mean by that? Are you implying that their personalities were staring to clash?

The worst part of all this recollection, of course, is that the likes of the Five, will in my opinion never be seen again, and no one will take up their mantle, (which actually, is impossible, given that a band has to be true to it's own vision, or it wouldn't make it) as I stated at the top of the page. The reason I mention this is that another, more positive way of looking at it just occured to me: that they were just that unique!

Ah, the curse of youth... I'm 17 and discovered Ben in December, 2004. By then it was... (sniff) too late... The Five had dissolved and I felt like I'd missed out on the magic.
That's basically exactly the way I feel about the Five, except that I discovered them about 4 months later.
Then I missed Ben's first UK tour for 4 years. That was a bit of a blow. But then I caught his second...Still, I long for the Five... Jared and Lindsay rock, but so did Robert and Darren, and the fact I never got to see them while they were together makes me sad :(
Bingo. That's exactly how I feel. Sadly, I still haven't seen him in concert myself.

(In fact, I'm gonna have to ask Mr. Folds about the possibility of one more BFF tour when I meet him some day before a concert. It's going to be pretty tricky phasing the question so he understands that I understand why they broke up and all, though.)

It's interesting in that I completely understand where the Five was coming from creatively, but I don't understand exactly where each member comes from individually, least of which Ben!

Also, just out of sheer curiosity, anybody else here a TMBG fan? It seems a lot of fans of TMBG don't really care for Ben, and I've simply never heard a fan of Ben mention TMBG. They're both pretty different, though, that might explain it.

Additionally, can anybody remember the name of that Japanese TV show that featured BFF a lot? I remember seeing it on some BF encyclopedia, but am unable to find it as current.

Ben has commented many times on his love for Japan...

Interesting. Believe it or not, I've actually pondered what percentage of american/english bands that play over there (Cheap Trick started over there), actually really like the place. (Do you know where he stated that?) Probably because it'd be really fun to become a rock star and travel over there on business. Never been, but I really want to, sometime. I'm actually considering learning the language.

That would indeed be "Rain down on me" by Kane. I had a bugger of a time [not] finding it. thanks ever so much, it was driving me crazy.

EDIT: It would appear it was just a Ben-soundalike covering it. Really sounded like his high-ish tenor, but the piano stylings didn't.

I was at the store today, when I heard someone singing who sounded like Ben, and it had a piano in it. It was a cover of some classic rock song, I think. I don't know the name of it. Any info on this?
Lyrics included "look into my eyes and tell me [something, something]" and something about walking the streets, I think. The song, if not covered by Ben, was certainly a cover, and was not the original, by the way.
