Tour Board / Gothic Theater, Denver (Part Deux)
« on: March 18, 2002, 07:19:36 PM »
(I didn't think I was so long winded  ;D)

Neil comes on. I really enjoyed his set. He has a great voice. Great range. He kind of reminds me of early Bowie before he messed his voice up with the druggie touring thingy. The crowd really appreciated him. Much better than the CC disaster of October. The one thing that sucked was that there was a couple having a very loud and obnoxious conversation behind me. I was getting very pissed. I almost said something. Kate had to calm me down. They were drunk. Who knows what would happen in a situation like that. I'm pretty sure that they wouldn't let me watch Ben if I threw someone off the balcony so I decided to leave it alone.

There is already a set list up on another thread so I'll just sort of give you a general overview of Ben's performance. Ben was way funny on Friday. OK so Ben is always funny but he was in rare form at the Gothic. The "One Down" story was hilarious even though I knew all the jokes that were involved. At one point he sang  a little bit of "You light up my life". He was searching for the correct key and decided he would play it in one key and sing it in another. After that he started to sing one of his songs in one key and play it in another. Sorry, I'm wracking my brain to try to remember which one but I can't. I'm not very good at remembering stuff like that. I was totally basking in the glow of Ben. His piano playing was super on. I only heard him screw up like twice which is amazing considering the pace that he was playing some of those songs. They were just minor dings. Nothing you would have noticed if there was a band behind him. He played something called "Fayetteville" that he wrote when he was 13.  He did a super-long percussive jam on the strings of the piano with the two mics. I was bummed he chose to play Luckiest instead of Evaporated (sorry BFF) cause Evaporated is one of my faves. At one point he played an improv song "I wanna have your baby". Now I read on the blue board this morning that it was a guy that screamed it which I guess means that my mystery woman that I want to buy a beer for wasn't there. Hmmmmmm.

Side note: the audience totally sucked as singers. Don't get me wrong. The crowd was great. It was a sold out show. Everyone had a great time. We just weren't even close to being on as far as the singing thing goes. We sucked on Army. We couldn't handle the lalalala part of Ben's new tune. Philosophy was weak at best. Must have been the cold air. I was drawing a total blank as far as harmonies. Messed up.

Second side note: My phone died before the end of the show. :'( I was crushed. Next time I will be prepared Grey  ;)

Great show. I really enjoyed seeing Ben with just his piano but I will be glad to hear his tunes full on band force soon. Very soon. That guy just doesn't come to Colorado enough.

OK...Let's try this again. I will try to be a little less wordy so I don't tweak out the BBS.

First off let me say that powerful evil forces were working against me on Friday. Only by the grace of Ben did I make it through the day.

The original plan was for me to leave work at 3:30, go gas up the car, pick my dogs up from daycare, go to the bank, grab concert clothes for Kate, pick her up at 4:40 and be at the Gothic early enough to get primo balcony seats.

Flash forward to 4:55. I am still at work. Kate is running over to the store to save us some time. She gets to my store. We leave to pick up the dogs, about a 30 minute trip to get the dogs and go to my house. We feed the pooches, change and get on the road. We decide to skip the bank and hope that the t-shirt people will take plastic. On the way to gassing up the car I call Greyseal to make sure I've got her number right. Surprisingly her voice sounds exactly as I thought it would. <g>  We chat for a bit and arrange to talk again when I get to the venue to check reception.

I was going to get deli sandwiches from this nice gourmet place across the street from where I work but they aren't the fastest place in town so McDonalds it is. Let me just say that I do crave McDonalds fries once in a while. I do not crave a Big Mac, ever.  Well, maybe once every few years but not to often. So we leave the drive thru. 45 seconds later we discover no straws and no napkins. f*ck you Mcf*cks! No fun to drive on the highway with no straws.

I will skip the hellish ride into Denver during rush hour-what we were trying to avoid by leaving early-to save BBS bandwidth. Let's just say that it wasn't part of the plan.

We get to the Gothic. There are about 75-100 people in front of us to get into the venue. Not really where we wanted to be but not a total disaster. They let us in right at 8:00 which was cool cause it was kinda cold out there. We had decided to sit up in the balcony for this show cause the last few shows we had gone to I've dragged Kate onto the floor. She's only a little over 5 ft. tall and she really wanted to have a good view of Ben. I wanted to sit in the balcony so I have a good place to set the phone for Grey to listen to the show. We get pretty good seats. Right up against the rail about a third of the way back in the theater. I will skip the description of the Gothic to save space once again. Let's just say it's very cool. My favorite place to see a show except Red Rocks. I call Grey again. It's all a go...she can hear just fine. How was the sound Grey? out of curiosity?

General Board / Coldplay Last night...a short report
« on: February 07, 2003, 06:47:46 PM »
Just wanted to give a short report on the Coldplay show last night.  :)

I had a really good time! Chris Martin is a great entertainer and the band was really tight. He was very gracious and the capacity crowd was really into the show. I’m not a “set list” kind of guy but I can tell you that they played all of the singles-Yellow, Politik, Clocks, Trouble…yada. They played my favorite: Spies so I was psyched. They also  played a couple of new songs also. The new tunes sounded a little on the heavy side but its always kind of hard to tell in a live setting. They rocked out everything pretty hard. Chris gets really into playing the piano, almost bouncing out of the stool when he plays. He is super intense. All and all a great show. Before the show it was announced that they would be coming back to the Denver area to play at Red Rocks in April. Swweeet! I wonder who they will play with. Anyways…I highly recommend going to check out these guys before they start playing huge venues. Well worth it.

OH...I took some pictures...don't know if anyone is interested in them but I would be more than happy to e-mail the best ones.  :)
