General Board / The Chemicals are Wearing Off (or, hey there)
« on: August 21, 2005, 12:03:46 PM »
Hey everyone!

I see some old, familiar faces around here.  Warm and fuzzy feelings all around.  There are also lots of new folks, which is good.  Life and message boards go on, I guess.

I just thought since I dropped in from outer space I should acknowledge my random entry and mysterious departure.  Hi!!  I can't say why exactly I stopped coming to the boards... shit got busy I guess.  I still love this place and I still love Ben, I just can't go thinking about it 24 hours a day anymore, which I suppose is a good thing. "Not that there is anything wrong with that!"

So, let's see... what has happened? Well, the biggest thing I guess is that I am a married woman now.  Bet you never thought that would happen.  PFF and I tied the knot in a beautiful wedding last April after a mere 10 years of courtship.  Marriage is great.  Our daily lives have not changed, but said 10 year courtship pretty much prepared us for growing old together.  And my beautiful shiny ring acts like a disco ball when the light is right.  We are still in LA, and he is finding a lot more steady work these days.

I wish I had 2 and a half years of good gossip, but basically I'm just the same.  Older, but I don't look it yet.  Mouths drop when I mention my age, and I'm just now at the point where I'm not insulted at how old everyone thought I was.  Ben still rocks my word, but I am less consumed with it.  I forget to preorder stuff, I don't chase bootlegs, I still get all the article alerts, but only guiltily file them away and force the thoughts about my fallen website to the back of my mind.  That said, I still HAVE to go to both shows every time Ben comes to LA.  I can't skip one.  Two shows are better than one!

Anyway, hi everybody.  I miss you guys.

General Board / Ben, Shatner's hero
« on: November 29, 2004, 10:06:33 PM »
I know I've neglected my website for the longest time, but I am still lazily collecting articles with the intent of one day updating it...

Thought you guys might enjoy this snippet from an article about William Shatner:

People are throwing around the words "critically praised" when they talk about the new album. Your collaborator Ben Folds deserves a lot of credit, I would imagine.

He's my new best friend. He's a musical genius. I would present him with the words and he would start to devise something. I'm not quite sure how it works. He would find a melody that fitted and then a style, and the style was different for each song. Our families have gotten close, and I really care a great deal about him.

A new hero?

He is a hero -- Ben's my hero.

Tour Board / How much $ to book Ben?
« on: November 25, 2001, 06:00:01 AM »
I came across some booking info for Ben, advertising to book Ben Folds "at your school"...

Anyone care to guess how much it costs to book ben for a show?

There is no venue size given along with the price.
It's in US dollars, so you Brits will have to do your own conversion.

Tour Board / Chopsticks
« on: March 02, 2002, 07:16:18 AM »
Ben played a Liz Phair cover at the Ann Arbor show called "Chopsticks."

The funny thing is, Greyseal gave me a version of this from a BFF show, but we didn't know what it was or where it came from.  I thought it was hilarious... but I thought Ben was making it up as he went along.

The lyrics are below; I'm sure you can see why I found it amusing when Ben sang them:

I met him at a party and he
Told me how to drive him home.
He said he liked to do it backwards.
I said that's just fine with me.
That way we can f*ck and watch TV.

It was four a.m. and the light was gray
Like it always is in paperbacks.
He asked if I liked playing jacks.
I told him that I was good to sixes,
But all hell broke loose after that.

I told him that I knew Julia Roberts
When I was twelve at summer camp.
We didn't say anything after that.
I dropped him off and I drove on home
'Cause secretly, I'm timid.

Tour Board / I Can't Wait... Here's Why
« on: February 27, 2002, 02:43:21 AM »
"It's my first real solo tour; it's just going to be me, a van and a piano." Folds' solo tour will be the first time he's revisited the Five’s material during his regular set-list since the band’s break up. (Folds' encores during the two fall tours consisted of him at the piano playing audience requests.) He said, "With the encore sets, I don’t need a set-list, because whatever someone wants to hear, I can play it."

Listeners shouldn't expect to hear a set-list of new material; rest assured, he'll be playing all kinds of songs. "Anything goes, unless its something I really don't feel like I'm inspired to play at that moment, or its something that really doesn’t make sense at the piano," he said.

- The Michigan Daily

"All of my old songs and everything I've ever written, I'm just playing them at the piano and realizing that they're giving me the same chill that caused them to be written in the first place," he says.

- Billboard

Beginning tonight (Feb. 25) at University of Iowa and running until March 31 in Solana Beach, Calif., Folds and his trusty piano will be going at it alone in what amounts to a relaxed, no setlist, "Storyteller" sort of affair. With fan interaction encouraged, the North Carolina native and current Australian resident says he's driven by inspiration to open up his songbook and play whatever comes to mind.

- Billboard

In a statement, Folds said that the foundation for his first solo tour was laid with a recent performance at New York's Bowery Ballroom. "I had a set list that was planned," Folds said. "But by the time the show was finished and I looked at what I had actually played, it had nothing to do with what I had planned. To me, that's the best kind of show."

Tour Board / "Something Different"
« on: February 10, 2002, 06:44:47 AM »
Here's what Ben had to say regarding touring in the WFUV interview back in December:

And as far as touring goes, I really want to do something different.  I want every tour to be a little different, and I’ve got a few ideas; I’m not exactly sure what I’m going to do yet.  But, um, I don’t expect I’ll be that predictable, the format of the touring next couple of years. I’ve got a lot of ideas.

Let's brainstorm.

Imagine you are Ben. What are your ideas to make each tour a little different?

Tour Board / Portland got Silver Street?!?

You lucky dogs!

Mrsben, I want a full report! I know Greyseal will be happy to provide it, but I'm not sure I can wait until after Seattle. hehe  :D

Tour Board / El Rey Ticket (Wednesday) Up For Grabs!
« on: March 27, 2002, 12:13:02 AM »
Anybody need an extra ticket to Wednesday's El Rey show in Los Angeles?

My boyfriend has to work late, so I have an extra ticket. 25 bucks is what I paid for it and the cost to you. If you are interested, please email me at before 5pm Wednesday so we can make arrangements. My tickets are at "will call," so you'll have to get it from me at the venue. Email me and we'll make arrangements.

Thanks, I hope!  ;D

Tour Board / California Dreamin'
« on: March 26, 2002, 11:27:26 AM »
Doors open in 36 hours and 2 minutes... but who's counting?  ;)

Will I even make it? The last day has been really hectic. I think 'PFF' will be too exhausted to go, which is ok because maybe I can leave straight from work.  No idea how I will get there.  Especially no idea how I will get home.  Don't really care!  Doubtful I can get rid of my extra ticket since it's will call.  Oh well.  Save me a place near the stage, G!  ;D

Tour Board / Best... Show... Ever
« on: March 29, 2002, 05:15:47 AM »
Ok, so not everyone will agree with the title of this post, but this is most definitely my favorite show so far.  We'll see if Saturday can top it.  ;D

It's way past my bedtime, but that's ok... I've got to get this out now.

First, the setlist:

Zak and Sara
*Note (my note, ok, our note!!)
Annie Waits
Morgan Davis
Louie took a big fat shit
Last Polka!!
Philosophy (jam)
The Luckiest!!
Not the Same
Ultimate Sacrifice
Rockin the Suburbs

Golden Slumbers
One Angry Dwarf
SFTD (minor)

Let's see... Greyseal, Kingweasle, and Greg were the first people in line and so generously held my place.  They also held me a place slightly left of center of the stage since I had to be in the will call line.  It was only a few feet farther to the right than last night, but this time I got just as much of Ben's face as I did ass... I think I got enough of Ben's ass last night.  ;)

While waiting, Greyseal suggested we write a note to Ben asking him to play Polka... which reminded me I had already done that! (The most productive thing I did at work all day, mind you.) The note said, "Ben, In our excitement we forgot to ask you last night... will you please grace us with The Last Polka? We will be eternally grateful. Love, Laura and Annie."  Then, Chris and Greg added their names.  However, after Neil's set (during which Ben played piano on one song), the setlist came out and we discovered that Polka was on it!  So after much debate with the crowd around the stage, I crossed out Polka and wrote in Narcolepsy. I also added an arrow and "Woo! On the setlist! We love you!"

So after Zak and Sara, he said, "More cards and letters," and he sang the note up to where it said Narcolepsy.  Then he stopped, because he said it sounded like Neil's song.  I don't know what it was, but it was beautiful! (Great lyrics.  ;))  The guy next to me (and I swear this guy got every request he screamed out including The Luckiest) screamed out, "Godzilla! Air! Godzilla" so Ben played most of Air before moving on to *our* request, Narcolepsy.  Which rocked.

An employee at the El Rey had brought her son - less than two years old. She told Grey and I she was going to the night before, when she let us back in to call a Cab... anyway, the boy, Stevie, made some noise and Ben totally stopped to talk to the kid, and he played a song he wrote for his kids (and I paraphrase), "Louie took a big fat shit, now his Daddy's cleaning it, he made a fuss all night..." I can't remember the last line of the verse, but it was followed by the same verse for Gracie.

The Ultimate Sacrifice was a real treat... Ben was telling his Korn Sucks story when somebody yelled out "Metal!"  After Sacrifice he got back to the Korn Sucks-Bog Segar-RTS story.  We were also treated to an impression of old metal v. nu-metal.

There were other stories which are sadly not coming back to me.  All I know is the crowd ate it up, especially Mr. curly haired request guy, who (though having absolutely no concept of sharing) had great taste.

We waited after the show again, and Greyseal donated her ticket for me to have signed since they gave me some weird generic ticket at will call.  (Odd, my other 3 are normal.)  I was much more comfortable this time, and I managed not to act like a silent or babbling freak.  Greyseal asked Ben to play Silver Street on Saturday, and he said he would definitely give it a try.  ;D He said he just couldn't get it right in Portland.  While Greyseal told him good she thought it sounded great, I blurted out, "Just f*ck it up. We don't care, we'll love it anyway." I'm not sure Ben even heard, but his manager seemed to think that was humorous.

And the moral of the story is... if Ben ever plays two consecutive shows in the same location and you only go to one, GO TO THE GOD DAMNED SECOND SHOW. Learn it. Live it.

TIB, get ready for Saturday. Annie, Chris, Greg and I are camping out all day.  I think.  So find us and you will have a kick ass spot.

~JBJ, oh my freaking god

PS - Ben lied. The Last Polka sounds great solo.

Tour Board / Tour Rumors and/or News
« on: December 17, 2001, 04:26:42 PM »
Ok. So what do we know about Ben's next tour?

We've heard rumors that Ben will be touring again in the spring.

And we've seen the posting at to book Ben in Feb or March.

But no actual confirmation just yet.

I just saw a post from Leia on the BBS that someone related to the band said Ben would be touring ALONE, i.e. actually solo, instead of with "the new guys."  Leia, this is me asking you to come here and post DETAILS, hun.  Who said this? Why?  :) Give us this information, and we will kindly continue to defend your name from the likes of jealous idiots everywhere.

If anyone else hears any news or rumors about Ben's next tour, please post them here.

Tour Board / DC

9:30 Club. June 12th.  It's looking more and more like I'll be in DC *cough!* visiting my brother.

I know some other people around these parts are thinking of being there as well.

So... YAY?

That is all.
