« on: December 15, 2012, 07:47:57 PM »
An awesome improv interview about the future: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRzdWS__IjE

And a longer intimate interview about some of the history of the reunion that might not be so well covered in other interviews: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtLz2Y03xe8

Americans can stream the album now on iTunes. Does anyone know which track it was for which Ben did the strings?

I'm listening now...

General Board / Alicia Witt?
« on: October 15, 2012, 06:26:27 AM »
I've noticed that Ben has been promoting/mentioning Alicia Witt a lot on Twitter. Anyone know if they've collaborated on something, or the heavy Twitter activity is account of their being fans/friends/something similar?

Album Board / Nataly Dawn song for BF5 album?
« on: September 22, 2012, 07:57:02 PM »
Does anyone else remember Ben mentioning a collaboration/Sonny & Cher style song with Nataly Dawn on the new record? Is this the song they didn't release?

I have not yet received and therefore read the liner notes. It's possible that she's singing background on some track ("Hold That Thought"?), and I just can't tell.

Just was playing around and noticed it's almost all

Dm and then F

The bridge is something like Gm Bb Gm Bb C

Also there's a fun piano riff in the right hand in upper registers that basically goes like G#AF over and over really fast.

Anyone know if it's still possible to order the new AFP album and get the bonuses listed on KickStarter? I was disappointed that I missed the boat on ordering the album while the campaign was still going...

Hey all,

I figured I'd link up here a review I wrote of Hotel Lights' Girl Graffiti, comparing it to the Biblical Book of Ecclesiastes. Don't know how many religion/Bible nerds are necessarily Hotel Lights fans or even Folds fans, but, if you are one, you might enjoy this... oholiav.com/2012/01/girl-graffiti-is-nothing-at-all-hotel-lights-ecclesiastic-echoes/

Cheers!

News / New Shatner album (no Ben as far as I know)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Searching_for_Major_Tom

Has anyone heard anything about it? The music video for "Bohemian Rhapsody" is a little bizarre and--I feel, not up to the mastery that Ben Folds unlocked in Shatner on Has Been.

Transcription / Lyrics to Girl Graffiti Album by Hotel Lights
« on: September 11, 2011, 10:42:36 AM »
I was surprised to see that these aren't posted anywhere online yet, so here's my copying what the lyric booklet itself says.

Being that the liner notes has no punctuation in the lyrics, I'll leave punctuating to somebody else. (I'm punctuating a little bit...)

Super 8 mm
snow is falling it's melting in your hair standing out in the cold neon air the bartender is dragging the trash out to the curb button yoru coat no place left but home saint cecilia is crying at a richmond dive
I want you to find me
I think I've been missing for a while
here comes that band that was drinking in the parking lot tell me what it says on the gold charm around your neck now you're in slow motion now you're breaking up now i am like a shakey hand held camera saint cecilia is crying at a downtown dive i want you to find me
think i've been missing for a while
the girl who works here is crying in the bathroom
I tried to stop you but you got into a place you could not explain to anyone my rose my dove my mexican girl tell me that joke again till everyone else goes away
jam box on the dashboard playing the Pretenders
Now I am like a blown out hand held super 8 this old town is for dry cleaners and violinists and street sweepers and dreamers like us saint cecilia is crying at a richmond dive i want to find me
I think I've been missing for a while
I tried to stop but you got into a cab and away into the night my rose my dove

My Own Cloud
On New Years day thought I saw you on the train
people are budled up out on the street long after silence
I've become strange strange holiday feel my breath escape lights flickering on the train in the city in vain and i don't owe you anymore of my attention show me the way out of here into the clear on my own cloud
another day come up bullet proof 3am you changed the game yo uplaced the blame my friends are careful not to mention your name
I don't owe you anymore of my attention
show me the way out of here into the clear on my own cloud
as cold sunlight shinning through the bare branches
show me the way out of here into the clear on my own cloud

Headboards and Aspirin
headboards and aspirin i quit my job i'm sleeping in
i still depend on waking up again.
Headboards and aspirin
I lost the girl I'm sleeping with
it's my time to spend it's your time to end
headboards and Aspirin
I dreamt I went back again
Footprints in cement wasn't what I meant there's a chill on my skin
Hey there's a person in my skin
Sometimes it's me and sometimes it's him
Headboards and Aspirin
I felt the cold porcelain
I still depend on time pressing in
Yeah, I still depend on headboards and Aspirin.

Through The Crowd
We could call the whole thing off
I'd understand i would never tie you down or rope you in if there's a reason to be cautious I'm not worried about it
Look at you you're moving fast through the neighborhood walking by a taxi stall and standing still if there's a reason to be cautious I'm not worried about it and it's always
Man I've got something on my mind
We don't stand a chance it's really only time it's really only time dreaming I lost myself I said too much waking up in the same shirt
I'm somewhere else if there's a reason to cautious I'm not worried about it
We were walking through the crowd

My Pretty Quirk
I'm jaded but I made it
There's no bullet holes in my head and waking up I'm guilty again you're back in my bed and it's still a mess and you're my pretty quirk
You should see yourself when you're asleep I never thought you could be so mean
You're like a great white shark in a lake
An inside joke I can't explain
And you're my pretty quirk
You got all of us just hanging around
We should pick up our things and be homeward bound
I'm jaded but I made it there's no bullet holes in my head and waking up I'm guilty again I'm back in your life and it's still a mess my pretty quirk

Tour Board / Hotel Lights at The Rock Shop 8/17/2011
« on: August 17, 2011, 10:57:51 PM »
One word: amazing!

Four more words: Tonight, I met Darren Jessee!

A lot of more words:

Here are a bunch of (if not all of) the songs they played tonight:

Falling Down
Girl Graffiti
Dave Sharkey To the Dance Floor
All My *sshole Friends
My Own Cloud
Super 8mm
My Own Cloud
Amelia Bright
Small Town Sh*t
Headboards and Aspirin
Blue Always Finds Me
Follow Through
Marvelous Truth
Anatole
A. M. Slow Golden Hit
one of the final tracks of Firecracker People where there's some cool key change sort of thing that happens about midway through or towards the end... I'm blanking on the name...

Anyway, it is worth sharing that I asked Darren if it's true that BFF are recording in December. He said, "We're talking about it, but nothing official is set" (or something really similar).

On a more personal note, it was unbelievable seeing Darren. I never saw BFF live, and I never saw Hotel Lights before. This was a small, intimate crowd tonight. Maybe 50 people at the peak. A lot of the people there seemed not necessarily to be there for Hotel Lights. I spoke to a few people tonight who asked me who the band was. (One guy came in from another building altogether because he heard the music and loved it so much. Apparently he'd just moved to NYC from Canada and was totally blown away by the BFF drummer playing such amazingly beautiful music in a quiet, relatively unknown venue in the middle of Brooklyn--almost anonymously.)

A few other highlights: before playing "Amelia Bright," Darren asked the crowd "You wanna hear 'Amelia Bright' or 'Small Town Sh*t'?" Myself included, I think 3 shouted for the former, and 2 for the latter. Darren responded, "We could just play a sh*tty version of 'Amelia Bright.'" AB came first and then STS came next, and Darren played the electric piano for both songs. He played electric piano tonight for probably about 5 songs. He--along with the rest of Hotel Lights--has a laidback approach to all instruments on that stage, but you can tell that Darren knows a bit about how to rock out on the piano. There was one fantastic moment during "Amelia Bright" where he played a pounding glissando that sounded more BFF than anything I've ever heard from Hotel Lights.

Also, tonight Darren introduced Charles Cleaver (sp?), the new keyboardist of Hotel Lights, and he's got a sweet setup with two synths and a laptop. Charles' adjusting the settings on the laptop with the screen facing the audience created a certain transparency about the electronica on the stage that was very intimate and very honest despite all the gadgets up there with him. Since I was sitting on the side of the room where Charles was playing--and since I'm a keyboardist--I immensely enjoyed watching the cool tricks Charles has got.

I wish I had enough words and energy to summarize how unbelievable it was tonight, but I've now met 1/3 of BFF, I got an autograph, and I heard some unbelievably beautiful music.
