Tour Board / the soho apple store show
« on: September 06, 2005, 03:12:32 PM »
hello from the soho apple store... i can't see anything, so i figured i'd contribute a live setlist/review!

they've started with jesusland, and whilst the sound down here on the main floor of the store isn't great, everyone upstairs sounds pretty happy!

General Board / Radio Play
« on: April 27, 2005, 07:34:48 AM »
hey people, how're y'all doin'?

just heard landed on xfm... like it, waiting to hear what people say when they text in! i think there'll probably be a poll somewhere on their website if any of you want to go and do some bigging up.

*waits a bit*

ooh, big range of responses to the song on the radio - quite divided it seems! there's someone somewhere who thinks ben has a sexy voice... not sure i entirely agree with that, but it's certainly amazing...

anyway, i hope you're all enjoying the new album and life in general,

em x

Ben's Old Five / elvin bishop...
« on: January 12, 2002, 04:52:05 PM »
can anyone tell me more about the song elvin bishop? I spotted it on an old BFF site, in the 'b-sides and rarities' section... I've never heard of it before... but you see, elvin bishop was the name of my grandfather.

which is weird.

Ben's Old Five / <massive nostalgia attack>
« on: June 06, 2001, 02:40:25 PM »
Today I got to see 'Ben Folds Five: Spare Reels'. I'd seen bits of it before but I sat down and watched the whole thing... now I *really* wish I'd had the chance to see them in concert. Sadly, by the time they broke up (makes them sound like a couple...) I'd only really been listening to them for about, oh, three weeks (or is it less, andy? :-)). So maybe nostalgia is the wrong word...

But still. They were pretty damn good.

Here's to what the future holds...

Ben's Old Five / BFF music videos
« on: January 31, 2003, 06:42:47 PM »
I'd never seen the whole of the SFTD video until a few days ago... so cool!

That little girl reminded me of me, pathetically enough. I used to do all sorts of horrifying things to my dolls.

I tried to give one a sleek chin length bob once, and when I got it wrong I made her into a punk instead. Sadly I tried to complete the look with a safety-pin earring and cut her head open...

Also saw the 'underground' vid again recently... I'd forgotten how elaborate it was.

I think my all time favourite is the one angry dwarf one though... the first one I saw and so damn awesome!

Album Board / Just Pretend
« on: March 09, 2003, 08:51:41 AM »
I've noticed the download thread expanding further and further with 'oh wow' and 'that's awesome'... but I think that, as the first new material we've heard since rockin' the suburbs, Just Pretend deserves a few more column inches, as it were. I'm starting this thread partly to make up for my initial non-reaction when I found out that Andy had a copy of a track of the EP.

To be honest, the first time I heard it, I didn't like it and was really disappointed. Andy had warned me that it was very Kweller and not so much Folds, but I don't think that was what bothered me. It's repetitive, and the piano just sounds wrong for some reason.

Andy's away at the moment, so I can't just listen to his file on his computer, so I actually downloaded it (thanks sweetie) on my crappy 56k, and now I like it a lot more. Admittedly, pretty much anything grows on me after enough listens, but I think it's more than that.

What I (now) love about this track is that it's so unpretentious... something that I've always respected about Folds and that I like about Kweller (in terms of the music I mean - not that they're pretentious otherwise, I don't think, but anyway). It's the simplicity of it, that bothered me at first by making it so repetitive, that appeals to me now. And also, maybe I'm completely making this up, but I swear you can *hear* them smiling when they sing. And the music sounds fun to play. Not that I know anything about playing music at all. Anyway. That's my take.

General Board / I'm home!!!!
« on: January 10, 2002, 02:04:24 PM »
after many adventures throughout the country I've finally made it back to my house in bradford... and my computer hadn't been stolen (which is rather surprising). but I'd left my monitor on... for three weeks. also, unfortunately, the cat is still with us. *sigh*

still, it's good to be back... I don't know how much I'll be around in the next couple of weeks what with revision, exams, and then a visit from my mum and little sister... but it'll definitely be more than in the past few days. Plus, my return to Bradford signifies the Return Of The Broadband Connection, which is going to make life a lot easier for me (and andy when he gets back).
Take care!

General Board / I think my mind is trying to lose me...
« on: January 20, 2002, 04:43:23 PM »
for some reason all I can think about is random elements of silly information... for example: did you know that because over a thousand (or whatever number) people ticked 'other' and then wrote 'jedi' on the dotted line when asked what religion they were in the last british census, 'jedi' is now in theory an official religion in this country?

(see what they teach us in Peace Studies? and there was me hoping to have some part in bettering the lot of humanity. sheesh.)

By the way, I'm sure you've all seen it, but The Italian Job is a very cool film.

I need distraction. From revision avoidance because that's as boring as hell. And I could always just start revising, but that's the easy way out...  ;D

*hugs*,

General Board / The t-shirts thing
« on: March 18, 2002, 05:24:33 PM »
I have a question - when is it that ben gets given his shirt by you lovely people?

Oh, and does anyone fancy finishing my essay on peacebuilding for me? I think I've developed an allergy to microsoft word.

General Board / aaaaaargh
« on: March 24, 2002, 05:02:24 PM »
My housemates have done it again.

Earlier this (academic) year, I was minding my own business and eating strawberry ice cream, when Maud and Gillian wandered into the lounge, turned on the TV, and got me hooked on Sex and the City. Earlier tonight, I was eating dinner, watching the news, and Maud switched channels, and has managed to get me hooked on West Wing. In the space of one episode.

Oh, and can anyone tell me - does Josh die?

*sigh*

The queen mum's died... 101 is a grand old age, but somehow it'd given us the feeling she'd be around forever...  :-[
