Tour Board / Perth, May 24 2011 - Riverside Theatre
« on: May 24, 2011, 08:49:25 PM »
Excellent show given Ben was playing in probably our most soulless venue in town.  It DOES have very good live audio recording facilities though and judging by a few comments from Ben there may have been stuff recorded that will appear at a later date...he mentioned a live album to come out later in the year which I presume will be part of the package of rareties etc.  Although I note he said similar stuff to the Adelaide crowd too!

Setlist:  (Not in order and I think I've missed a few)

Levi Johnston Blues
Doc Pomus
Gone
Claire's 9th
Philosophy (incl Miserlou)
One Angry Dwarf
Underground
Annie Waits
Adelaide
Boxing (when he sang 'Howard' I thought especially of Mel and how much she 'loves' it)
Effington
You Don't know Me
Sentimental Guy
Bastard
Last Polka
Landed
Not the Same (said we were all so good on the WASO DVD he wanted us to sing the harmonies for the live album..and to be fair the band NAILED it.  Not sure about us in the crowd though.)
Belinda
You to Thank
Sleazy
From Above
Luckiest
Kate
Zak and Sara
Songs of Love
Still Fighting It
Picture Window
Hiroshima
Rock This Bitch...Kate Miller-Heidke tweeted that it was the best RTB she'd seen in 4 tours with Ben.

Sam had a major problem with his hi-hat about 5 songs away from the end.  Amsuing to see him play with 2 guys at his feet frantically trying to fix the problem.  They ended up getting rid of it altogether and stealing Chad's hi-hat for the encore.  All in all a stellar performance, especially from about 4 or 5 songs in.  Kate Miller-Heidke was brilliant too but then I've been a fan of hers for some time now.
Setlist sems similar to the other Oz gigs.  LOVED that he payed Sentimental Guy and Songs of Love and Still Fighting It.  Hadn't heard any of those live before.

As I said, I think I'm still missing a few from the setlist.  I'll update it as and when I remember!

General Board / BFF Makes List of 100 Songs Every IPod Should Have
« on: February 03, 2011, 08:24:16 PM »
OK, so it's Brick and comes under the sub-heading of '10 Sad Songs' and some of the entries are dubious at best...but I'm not going to complain about seeing BFF on such a list.

General Board / Who HASN'T Ben been compared to?
« on: June 07, 2009, 09:51:23 PM »
In particular I mean people who play piano/keys.  With all the Elton John/Billy Joel comparisons I thought it might be fun to think of those who don't rate a mention.  Plus it's been a little quiet here of late so this might kill a few minutes...

I'll start:

Benny from Abba.

News / Gonzo Ballet
« on: December 11, 2007, 05:26:52 AM »
Apologies for those who already knew about this, but it was news to me.  But I should warn you that it is from the gospel according to Wiki...:

'Gonzo Ballet is a feature-length documentary about a ballet by Margo Sappington called "Common People", which was set to the music of William Shatner and Ben Folds from their album Has Been. The film explores the genesis of this unique artistic collaboration by fusing the music, poetry, and dance of "Common People" with interviews of the creators, dancers, and audience members.

Featuring interviews with William Shatner, Ben Folds, Margo Sappington, and Henry Rollins.

The film, currently in post-production, was made by Special Entertainment in association with Melis Productions and is set for a 2008 release.'

General Board / Chudley's Bad BK Karma Strikes Again!
« on: March 29, 2007, 02:09:19 AM »
Who else  has been afflicted?

Oh, Allison you are in sooooo much trouble!

Your bad Ben Kweller karma has made it over to Oz.  It's the Blues n Roots festival this weekend with Mr Kweller playing Saturday...or so I thought.  Then I get this:

'Sunset Events regrets to announce that, due to flight scheduling issues, Ben Kweller is now to play the Sunday billing of the West Coast Blues 'n' Roots Festival. '

Flight scheduling my arse. From the get-go BK's website has said he's playing April 1.  I posted on BK's website to no avail and hassled the organisers who PROMISED me he was playing March 31 .  I bought tix for March 31 of course.  Sunday tix are sold out.  Couldn't go Sunday now anyway as have other stuff on, like a work function.  And no, he's not doing any side gigs here either.

So I shall have to join BKAnonymous (as he will remain anonymous to me) with Chudley, as we have yet to meet him despite doing everything possible to do so.

My real question is...who else had caught the bad karma?  Had Allison's inability to see a particular act had an effect on your life?  Anyone going to see Mr Kweller on the East Coast of Oz?

I'm so sad.   :'(

PS:  You can take a joke, right Allison?  You will still speak to me after this??

General Board / Your Funeral Song?
« on: January 23, 2007, 03:33:03 PM »
What song/s do you want to be played as a 'last hurrah'? After there were a couple of replies on the Mix Tape topic I thought it might be worthy to start a new topic and see what everyone's thoughts are on this.   This isn't meant to be morbid, you can be deep or go for the irony of the situation or just plain silly.

Try to include at least 1 Ben track if you can...

At the moment I'm going for Best Imitation of Myself and Here Comes the Sun (Beatles)

News / Vote Ben as Oz's 'Best performance by a soloist with an orchestra '
« on: November 21, 2006, 07:05:59 PM »
I doesn't matter if you're not Australian or even if you don't even know where the hell Australia is, let's try and upset Limelight magazine's poll!

Limelight magazine 'provides coverage of all Australian arts and music, as well as the only comprehensive guide to what's on ABC Radio, as well as ABC TV and ABC2.' and they are having a Best of 2006 poll in various categories.  I've voted for Ben in the 'Best performance by a soloist with an orchestra' for his Oz tour with 5 different state symphony orchestras.

Here's the e-mail I got:

'This is your last chance to vote in the first ever limelight awards - designed for all lovers of music to vote for their favourites and recognise outstanding musical achievement.

These are not industry awards, designed only for the select few. These awards are open to absolutely anyone. The only prerequisite is a passion and love for the arts, in particular for classical music.

Voting details and coupon are at:
www.limelightmagazine.com.au

The voting categories include:

Best performance by an orchestra
Classical music personality of the year
Best musical achievement
Recording of the year (Australian)
Recording of the year (International)
Best chamber music performance
Best performance by a soloist with an orchestra
Best leadership by a conductor
Best music festival / event
Best new composition
Best newcomer

Voting has been extended to 1 December 2006.'

Given that their driving force is all things classical and there's been waaaaaay too much Mozart played this year for anyone's liking, let's vote for Ben and see if we can't upset the apple cart.

Just wondering.  Can't find any reviews on-line for the Adelaide gigs.
I did find this though..a recent Weird Al interview for anyone interested.
