Well, since I was last here.  Which is some years ago.  Hanny, Chloe and Alex were much in evidence then as now.

Everyone knows Hiro's Song by Ben Folds, ja?  About a chap called Hiro who has an affair with a younger woman called Yuko?

Right, so I was iPodding a load of CDs today, and I noticed that the last track on Blur's The Great Escape is called Yuko & Hiro.

Can anyone provide an explanation?  Am I being colossally ignorant about some well-known cultural reference?

It's a good tactic.

I'm bored there now so I might try it.

However, the quote clearly infers that it is these songs which prove Ben's prowess as a lyricist (not a songwriter), which, given that he didn't actually write all these lyrics, is misplaced praise.

Andy, is that (Ed.) comment from you or from the actual NME editor?

Aaah, well it's quite literally thrilling to know that I haven't been forgotten in my absence.

No shit Chloe, you have a dog called Daisy?  My dog is called Daisy too.

Good stuff.

Right, bye again for about a million years (I just almost typed a million tears - Freudian typos etc thingy, or not).

Cripes kids, it's been a while.  The reason I haven't been on at all for ages is largely because I finished my degree (which meant I was busy) and got a j*b (which means I'm busier, and the last thing I usually want to do after a day spent staring at a computer screen is spend an evening staring at a computer screen), but, well, I missed some of you, so I thought I'd pop back and see who was about still, and there weren't many names I recognised, so I thought I'd do a search for "boredom", to see if anyone had mentioned me and, lo and behold, they had.  Whoop de doo.  Well, it's nice to think people remembered me, back in August (gosh it has been ages).  But they probably don't any more.  Ho hum.  Bye then.

I think head means headaches (especially in northern dialects). So I think he's just trying to say that it was doomed as she tended to give him headaches.

Ah yes, but what headaches...

Um, "come head" isn't one that I've heard.  Does it mean something polite in Liverpool?

The other day I learnt how to say "suck my dick" in Greek.  Not that that has anything to do with what we've just been talking about, oh no.

Right, um, back to the topic at issue... connections... er, I wonder if the "pale English face" in Zak and Sara belongs to "our fair foreign friend", Steven...?

Chloe, how old is your brother?

If he's between the ages of 13 (maybe younger) and 20, he's probably at it pretty much non-stop.

HAHA, now you can't get the image out of your head!!  ;D  ;)

Also (and this is a slightly less dumbass point) a lot of songs on WAEA are about disastrous relationships/disasters in relationships (Fair, Brick, SFTD, SC&C, Smoke, Cigarette, BofWCCL, Missing the War). Jeez, that's practically the entire album.

This is a subject that came up during a discussion I started a while back on the .com, where loads of people seemed to be saying that they had either been introduced to BF/F by a partner, or else had introduced a partner to BF/F (especially WAEA), and that those relationships had pretty soon ended. I got to pondering whether it was the content of the album that actually contributed to these break-ups.

It happened to me: I introduced my ex to BFF, she bought WAEA and listened to it constantly, we split up (I actually think WAEA may have been playing in the background when I dumped her). That said, I don't blame BFF personally for our break-up.  It was doomed from the start. She was northern.
(but she gave great head). ;) :P
It's strange, because most of those songs come across as quite romantic on a first listen (if a bit wistful and mournful), but they're actually quite depressing from a romance point of view. In fact, my ex's favourite song, which she said made her think of me, was Fair. I think she thought of it as "our song". I don't think she can have been listening to the lyrics.

OK, that was a lot of words to make quite a simple point. I should go to bed. Night night kids.

I always thought there was some kind of common conceptual theme running between Smoke and Cigarette (y'know, because a CIGARETTE is something you SMOKE, and a CIGARETTE creates SMOKE. It's pretty obscure and intellectual, so some of you might not get it at first).  Like with that K.D. Lang concept album all about smoking. "Drag", it's called. Mmmm. Right.
