General Board / The Luckiest -- instrumental?
« on: February 14, 2013, 01:57:22 PM »
A friend of mine is looking for an instrumental version of The Luckiest to walk down the aisle to at her wedding. I'm not sure that anything like that exists, but any thoughts/suggestions?

So, excited as I am for these three CDs and the reunion and all, I keep coming back to the FIFTY-FIVE "vault" songs we're going to have access to as well.

Seriously, 55 unreleased pieces of work? Yes, I'm sure we've heard at least a few of them, but holy crap! \m/

Here's a lukewarm review of the show from The (Columbus) Dispatch: http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/arts/stories/2010/11/09/review_ben_folds.html?sid=101

How could I forget?!?!? He played one other cover: "Sleazy" by Ke$ha. It came with a story.

Apparently a few days ago Ben decided that they would cover whatever song was the No. 1 seller on iTunes at that moment. Ke$ha had just released an EP and this Sleazy song was on it, so they picked it. It's not even in the top 10 now and was only there because it was part of the just-released EP, much to Ben's chagrin. He asked if anyone knew it and nobody yelled, so he laughed and played it anyway. It was, in a word, HILARIOUS.

Epic. I'll post what I can remember.

Opened with a slowed down version of A Working Day, then immediately into Doc Pomus but there was some popping noises in the speakers that startled him and made him stop. He joked about it and then went into a full version of A Working Day.

Can't remember the order of everything, but he played:
Gone
Hiroshima
Levi Johnston's Blues
Claire's Ninth
Belinda
Rockin' The Suburbs
The Luckiest (solo) you could hear a pin drop on this one
From Above
Saskia Hamilton
Army
Zak & Sara
Kate
Two improv songs about being in Columbus, both of which were fantastic
Bastard
Landed
Annie Waits
Still Fighting It
The Bitch Went Nuts
Effington

Encore was
Some serious drum solos
Bitches Ain't Shit
Not The Same

It was a full two hours, and he apologized because he's a bit under the weather and missed some high notes.

Five total musicians including Ben, and no more Jared Reynolds? I must have missed that memo.

Who else was there?

Question: how did people in the audience dress for the show?

Hey! You're that guy who followed me to Peppers two weeks ago. How you doing?

About the song, I feel like it's a deeply moving song that is really an amazing look at the slow painful side of a break up, but I don't think it's the best song on the album. That would have to go to Kylie from Conneticut for me.

Haha, yeah, that's me. Thanks for the lead!

Doing pretty great...showed about 9,000 people my picture with Ben and they were all jealous. Every single one of them. How are you doing?

So I resisted the urge to download the album before it leaked, as well as the urge to listen to the fake songs. It's been rough, but that meant that today I got to listen to the new album in all its glory from front to back. My preferred way to listen to new albums.

Anyway...I'm sitting here on my computer, working on an article for tomorrow (I'm a sports writer) and I was absolutely blown away by Cologne. What a deep, introspective and what sounds like a deeply personal song. I seriously stopped writing for the entire time so I could pay better attention to every note, because hearing this song was clearly a memory I wanted to be able to cherish.

Anyone else feel this way about the song? I think it might be his best, most emotional song.

Cheers, thanks from me as well!

I didn't download the songs when they leaked because I prefer to wait for the album to actually be released so I can go through the whole process of buying it, listening to it and remembering where I was the first time I heard it, etc. Now that I know these are fake goofy songs I'm dying to hear them myself.

Thanks for the link!

I just got back from the show and I had a few thoughts...For starters, this is my fourth show of this tour and while I will admit Eef is growing on me, I thought that this was his worst set yet.  And I think he would agree, he seemed frustrated up there and didn't have as much energy as past shows.  He covered a Talking Heads song called, "Heaven," which was different.  It's tough for anyone to be a solo act in front of a crowd who waited out in the cold a long time for Ben Folds.  Ben came out once they started playing Journey again, "Feels like the first time."  One small detail that I noticed and thought was pretty funny was after tambo-man played "Effington" with the guys, Michael or Leo (I don't know which one's which) came to pick up his stool and he was eating a banana.  Just kind of a funny visual, carrying a stool offstage in one hand and a pealed banana in the other, in front of a sold out crowd.  I thought that Ben's strategy to play Rock This Bitch early to avoid all the request screamers worked pretty well. That is, up until that guy yelled during Fred Jones, but even before Ben called him a dumbass someone yelled at the guy to "Shut the f*ck up!" and a few middle fingers were thrown up also.  Sam was rocking out harder than ever, lots of head-banging and tons of enthusiasm.  You could tell that Jared was getting a kick out of it.  Ben had someone from the crew go get Jared's iPhone from his coat so that the crowd could hear the intro to "The B*tch Went Nuts".  The Asian man's version was slightly different from what Ben had been reciting in past shows, but pretty similar.  Ben played the solo of "One Angry Dwarf" with the synthesizer which sounded different and awesome.  Lastly, for Ben's outro before his final jam, he was chanting "Thank you Columbia."  The only problem is that the show was in Columbus.  But as far as I am concerned Ben is right and the state is wrong.  Newport Music Hall is in the city of Columbia, OH which is surrounded by the city of Columbus, in which The Ohio State University is located.  The energy of this show was outstanding.  In my opinion this was the best show of the tour yet.

I noticed that too when he called it Columbia. I think the bandmates noticed too, because they looked to be laughing at each other and exchanging looks like, "Did he just say that?"

We were off to the right, about three rows from the stage. Nice, but we couldn't see Ben's hands flying along the piano. What about you?

News / New album tidbit from Columbus
« on: March 05, 2008, 09:37:04 PM »
So Ben said at the show tonight that they have finished recording the new album and they will be mixing it on Monday. They recorded some crowd stuff for the Hiroshima song.

Just thought I'd pass that along. Also, I remember hearing that Ben recently went through a divorce but my girlfriend noticed he definitely had his wedding band still on. Thoughts?
