I play drums for a living. I love it!

I used to play the bassoon but I was rubbish at that.

News / Re: Farewell Lindsay

Really sad that Lindsay has officially left - saw him twice with Ben was he was absolutely awesome. Having said that, Sam did a great job in Manchester in January.

All the best for Lindsay in his future projects, and good luck Sam!

General Board / Re: Playing the drums - difficult?

Kidney:

Yeah, both Darren and Lindsay (oh, and Ben too!) do some great drumming. A lot of their playing sounds pretty straightforward, but they do play some really cool and subtle things that make a good drum track into a GREAT drum track  :)

Mr Steve

The drums are just as difficult to master as any other instrument. However, an advantage is that as soon as you start playing drums, it sounds like "drums", unlike learning the violin for example, which sounds like a cat in pain until some level of proficiency is reached.

As you play piano already, you have a flying start as far as general musical awareness (and music reading?) is concerned.

Independence is one of the hardest parts of drumming. Using all four limbs simultaneously doing different things is challenging! As for how long it could take, that totally depends on your existing music abilities and your willingness to work at the hard stuff! The best way to go is to find a drum teacher - even just to cover the basics such as grip and stroke, and coordination.

I can advise on places to find a drum tutor or buying drums if you want :)
