Title: New note from Ben
Post by: Jane_Be_Jane on July 11, 2003, 10:36:43 PM
Mr. Cell posted this in the EP thread (thanks, man!), but I wanted to make sure no one missed this.

Go to and read the shit now. More details on the EPs.  Details you may very well like.

Or not.  Suit yourself.

~JBJ,  ;)

I've been waiting months for a new message from Ben. Loving his new haircut.

"a few of the tunes on the EP's are older songs that i never recorded in a fancy studio until now. a lot of them are brand new, and there's also the odd cover song."

Older songs!!! I've wet myself twice in 10 minutes just reading this.

On the sunny 16 EP, he has a song called "They give no f*ck," which i'm pretty sure was one of those downloadable ones that were listed somewhere on this site a while back. Also on that EP is a song called "You've got to learn to live with what you are," which I think could be another of those downloadable songs. (The one that goes "You've got to give the people what they want.)

Another exciting thing for the future is the extreme lack of "Name" songs. 2 out of 11 isn't bad for Ben. (Assuming we count "Adelaide" as a name.)

PS - I didn't know Darren Jessee played guitar  ???

Sorry Jane!

I read what you posted on another thread just after I posted all that stuff. Just letting you know I'm not ripping you off!

I'm finding it kind of hard to be excited about these new EPs  :( If i step back from the fact that Ben Folds/Five were probably the band that influenced and captivated me for many of my teen years, i can't help but feel really disappointed by this.
I mean, since Ben Folds Five split up, Ben has recorded less than twenty new songs, with 'Live' revisiting Ben Folds Five songs [very well, i admit]and now this first EP is revisiting *really* old stuff. I want to hear new material from one of my favourite musicians ever. Hearing 'Fair' or 'Selfless, Cold and Composed' for the first time gave me shivers. I want to hear that kind of music again; a release of that calibre, that can really blow me away.
I know Ben doesn't have to please me or anyone. Indeed, he has pleased me greatly over the last few years, and i am grateful that i got to hear his music, because it was deliverance from sh*tty pop music, and made me want to hear more real music. But as time goes on, i'm finding it hard to get as excited as i did [especially about cover versions]. and that makes me sad.
just wanted to ramble, sorry.

p.s. my girlfriend said that cover versions and re-dos dont excite her as much either, because its kinda like knowing what your xmas presents are before you open them; it takes away the buzz. I agree.

Um... if you read Ben's message it's slightly ambiguous. It says 'quietly releasing my music as EP's allow me to get it out there as i finish it' then 'at the beginning of the year, the full length cd will come out'. Sooooo... will the full length CD just a compilation of the 3 EPs, or is he being ultra-prolific and basically putting two albums' worth of stuff out in the space of a few months?

I can't agree with the person above who isn't happy with this. When you get an album, you always know you have to wait ages for the next instalment... this method (regular EPs) is preferable to me. Plus, regarding the fact that some of the songs are old, well they may be but I haven't heard them. I suspect some of the biggest fans may have heard early versions of them, but it's a bit elitist to suggest others shouldn't. Anyway, just my opinion. And you know you'll all be buying them!

I think the fact that a lot of this "new" material is really in fact "old" material is not that new of an idea at all for Ben.  A lot of songs off of WAEA were from his 1990 Demo stuff...even TUBORM had some old stuff like Lullabye (at least I think it was that one) which was co-written with Anna Goodman.

And also, Ben put out a solo album within a year of breaking up with BFF, pretty fast if you ask me.  Then a year later he comes out with a very good collection of live material.  Within a year after that he will release several new EPs.  Some artists take 3-4 years to come out with any new material at all.  If you ask me, I think Ben's been pretty good about getting fresh material out there.

- Cell, still excited to hear these songs  ;D

Cell - Good point about the 'recycling' thing. Reworkings of the demos do interest me, because i love those songs, but at the same time, they were written a long time ago, and i want to hear something more representative of Ben Folds now, that shows the progression he's made in the last 10 years since they were written.

On the demos subject, does anyone think that the roughness of the recording gives them a really haunting, affecting atmosphere? i really like the rawness of kalamazoo or half asleep.

I think I'm just a bit concerned that the fact we're getting an EP of reworkings and covers so soon after a live reworking with covers perhaps signals a musical dry patch for ben. Plus I just want an album dammit!

Although i have these concerns, I totally respect Ben for breaking the mold by putting his stuff out there direct, with minimal involvement from The Man. Nice to see a shift where the artist is the focus, not the business. I really hope it all works out, the world needs more musicians like him.

Hi Matt, while I can't agree with your disappointment, I respect your opinion, especially stated without a sense of entitlement.  While it won't take the place of a whole new album of songs, it does seem like the 2nd EP coming (in September?) is all new stuff.  I think just this first installment is really old stuff he recorded "to warm up."  (He said last year he might record Protection -- or was it Kalamazoo -- to warm up.)

I do think the sh*tty (for lack of a better word) quality of some of those old recordings gives them a haunting feel, though part of that feeling may be influenced by the fact that we know we're hearing something from the pre-BFF days.  Haunting is cool, but when I listen to them I always wish for a nice clean version, mostly because I wanted to share them with friends and knew they were tracks only a mother could love, so to speak.

Not to mention, we have only heard a few bars of Wandering... and anyone who heard those few bars has wanted to hear the whole song for 2 or 3 years.  :)

Amen to that Jane.

I didn't really like Kalamazoo that much, but the demo of Tom and Mary is far far better than the finished product. It's true what someone up there said, the rawness gives it a great feel.

yeah, it will definately be interesting to hear those old songs 'cleaned up', especially if Ben produces it himself [which i assume he will]- RtS was overproduced IMO, but hearing those songs in the raw, natural setting of the live album [along with Silver Street] gave them a more personal quality.

Hearing Wandering will be awesome too. Don't get me wrong, although there is slight disappointment/caution, there is excitement too, because any Ben stuff is good stuff. And indeed, the second EP is full of new material.

thanks for helping me help myself, lol.

I don't think we'll have to worry too much about over-production this time around.

Quoting from the Zloo chat (Dec 2002) again, here's what Ben had to say... (granted, things keep changing...)

Zloo (1:32:03 PM): album...
Zloo (1:32:54 PM): my focus is good right now. voice to song to piano. one thing kinda vibe. i want that to translate in a way i haven't done. but! i'm into f*cking around with it a lot because i've been solo piano-ing now for nearly a year
Zloo (1:33:22 PM): i can just sit down and play my songs without thinking. before i'd have to have all the arrangements etc
Zloo (1:33:28 PM): so i'll start there
LankyK140 (1:33:43 PM): so do you like being able to sit down without thinking?
Zloo (1:33:47 PM): i wish people could hear my demos for rockin the suburbs
justbejane (1:33:54 PM): put 'em out there!!
CielNuit99 (1:33:56 PM): why cant we?
Zloo (1:33:58 PM): it was far more childish
snuzzbff (1:34:03 PM): i'm sure you could...umm*cough* LEAK THEM Annie....or Leia
snuzzbff (1:34:21 PM): ...leak them to Annie is what i meant to say
Zloo (1:34:24 PM): well... i guess there's no reason. my problem is there are no coherent lyrics on them for the most part
justbejane (1:34:40 PM): lol... that might be interesting to hear
luv2ski221 (1:34:54 PM): demos are always enteresting
thrdegreebrnz (1:34:59 PM): the internet would be a great place for those demos! haha
MrsBenFolds (1:35:13 PM): There a great place for all the rest of the demos thus far
Zloo (1:35:29 PM): i suppose that more than that. i wish that i had made the album that way
LankyK140 (1:35:44 PM): a bit too polished
LankyK140 (1:35:46 PM): ?
MrsBenFolds (1:36:11 PM): I suppose there was a bit more track-fixing than there was sh*tty tracks to fix
LankyK140 (1:36:23 PM): "track-enhancement"
MrsBenFolds (1:36:26 PM): I feel like dr. suess for that one
Zloo (1:36:33 PM): polished... hmmm... maybe. i mean, that's what i wanted. but there was a bi product of the polish. i was made nervous the whole time by the process. low self esteem
Zloo (1:36:52 PM): ben grosse is excellent. don't get me wrong
DblExSG (1:37:07 PM): hey ben, do you think that you will be playing all of the instruments again?
Zloo (1:37:44 PM): all the instruments. see. i gave the wrong impression with suburbs. that doesn't sound like me playing all the instruments
snuzzbff (1:37:51 PM): and any ideas on whether you're going to self-produce it or work with someone with the new album?
Zloo (1:38:13 PM): marc and i will record the album. i'm putting together a studio

So I leave the office Friday, casually log on this morning (Monday) and Holy Crap!!  Very exciting stuff.

As for the recycling bit...I think we all loved Annie's recording of the Bowery show.  I mean hearing the audience participation in Army for the first time was simply amazing.  But then BFL took many of the best elements of that show and captured better sound quality.

The snippet that we all first heard from the Zona Rosa boot was exciting to us.  To hear it in a more extended version this spring even more so perhaps.  But to possibly have that song in a final recorded version...great.

And as for Wandering...I agree with JBJ.
