Title: BFF album: complete
Post by: Damian on July 09, 2012, 02:52:49 AM
Surprised there isn't a thread or at least a post, as far as I can see, on this particular topic.

The album's done!  People have heard it!  Apparently it's great (surprise)!  Exciting, no?

Who heard it?  Are there any articles out there? I haven't seen anything yet.

Industry people. Twitter seems to indicate that Folds shared the album with Amanda Palmer. Looking forward to September...

I think Darren said in an interview somewhere with Spinner they're doing a version of "Time" for the album (wasn't sure why and I think I agree with that).  And also that the one girl from Pomplamoose or whatever it is is featured on one of the songs -- he didn't seem too wild about it, and I'm inclined to agree (again), though I'll hold final judgement 'til I hear the song, haha.

Any idea where that interview could be found?  Time is my favorite Folds song, would love some confirmation.

Wow. TSOTLOTM is even longer than TUBORM. And it sounds like an REM lyric.

Awesome cover though!

i'd love some confirmation too. confirmation that this is false. that'd be the stupidest idea ever. the band gets together after 13 years and ends up re-recording a song off of Ben's second solo album? i hope to god that's not true. I'd be ok with them playing it live, but the song exists already and is just fine.

One of Ben's vlogs said there was originally an 11th song, but it sucked so it got cut.  I'll take bets it turns up as an exclusive track on itunes or amazon preorders.

Can't wait to hear this album!

Has there been an official confirmation that pledgers will get the record earlier than the street date?  I had read a batch of articles from various sites yesterday stating that we would:

http://www.avclub.com/articles/ben-folds-five-announce-new-record-its-first-in-13,82526/

From what I read on the pledgemusic site on the release, however, I didn't notice anything aside from that September 18th date.

Yes, pledgers will get it early - I saw it written somewhere.  Normally you get the album digitally pretty much as soon as it's done, but that's the artist's decision.  This is one of the larger artists to launch an album through PledgeMusic, and so I suspect it'll only be released a short time before the CD shipping date in order to minimise the amount that it's circulated online before most people can actually buy it...

When Jukebox the Ghost released 'Safe Travels' this year pre-orders got the digital download a week earlier than street date. I could live with the same timeline for BF5. I know we all want it now, but I do want the guys to get as many purchasers are possible. So they do realize how much of a big deal this is. :D

"Do It Anyway" now available as a single on iTunes.

Now that it's been mastered there's a bit more definition.  The background vocals and Robert's bass definitely pop a little bit more.

Interesting cover art.

Allegedly there was an 11th track, but Ben said it was crap and was therefore scrapped.(I think he said it in one of the Vlogs on PledgeMusic). I would imagine if there was to be a bonus track, it would be that one. OR HOPEFULLY, maybe a song from one of their festival shows at Bonnarroo or Mountain Jam. Their rendition of Narcolepsy at Bonarroo was amazing with the jazz interlude at the end. It would need to be mixed though because the sound from the videostream wasn't great.

Love the mixing on the radio edit of Do It Anyway, but I'm not a fan of the abrupt ending.  To me it cuts out some of the best part of the song and some of the intensity in order to get it under 4:00 minutes.

Over the weekend I was listening to The Nerdist podcast with Ben from last fall and towards the end Ben plays an idea for the, at-the-time, unrecorded new BFF album.  He had the chords and the melody, but no lyrics, and said it was inspired by watching a Philip Glass documentary.  Having listened to the TSOTLOTM preview clips on Amazon, I realized that what he was playing was the chorus to Erase Me.

I know, I know, "Cool Story Bro."   :P  Just thought I'd point it out if anyone wants to go back and listen

Good call.  I meant to go back and listen after the samples but just forgot to.  Is shaping up to be a really cool song, for sure.

Also, anyone else get any "over the hedge" vibes from a couple samples?  The choruses for Michael Praytor and Breaking My Heart made me think of Heist and Still, respectively.

Nice catch! If anyone is interested I believe the chords he plays on the show are: Gm, Bbm, F (A in bass), Am, Cm, Ebm, Gm, D.

Came across this early (improvised) version of "Draw a Crowd" over the weekend.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prebCWMlLZo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prebCWMlLZo)

I vaguely remember watching this video when it was first posted, but had long since forgotten about it.  Sounds NOTHING like the preview clip on Amazon, though I remember reading somewhere that Ben said that lyric has been in his head for over a decade.

As a side note, I personally will find it funny if indeed that lyric came from Ben's experiences at the Newport in Columbus.  I wasn't at this specific show, but have seen my fair number of concerts there.  Suffice it to say, it's the kind of venue that would probably have interesting...um, graffiti... in the green room.

I've heard the new record. I'm a journalist so don't ask me for any leaks etc. but I think everyone's gonna dig it.
It's definitely a mix of Ben's more recent solo efforts (as figured - they DID break up over ten years ago...) but it's awesome to hear the familiar rhythm section and the guys voices.

My favorites by far are ..
"...Michael Praytor" - great verses and great Sledge basslines/harmonies

"Draw a Crowd" is super catchy and starts with Jesusland-esque harmonies. Almost reminds me of "Your Redneck Past..." It's a fun one.

"Hold that Thought" reminds me of "Mess" but has an amazing twist towards the end. Very Reinhold...very BF5.  I almost like it more than "Mess." Would have fit great on "Reinhold..."
Lots of maj7s for the musicians out there.

"Thank You for Breaking My Heart" is a waltz-y ballad and is a little mysteriously beautiful (i.e. "Boxing"/"Selfless, Cold & Composed"). One of their best ballads.

Ben's at his best when he writes in jazzier voicings and that's a huge key to the 5's sound and why his solo stuff is so much different.
Needless to say, it's a great album but more of a grower/slow burner than anything they've done yet but I love it!

Thanks Perplexy! I remember Reinhold took me a bit of getting used too after the rockin' sounds of the first two albums (and NBP). Of course it wasn't long before I thought it was great. I've liked all of Bens solo albums except WTN--just didn't get into it (and I tried). Glad to hear there are some maj7's in there--my favorite chord! I agree with you on the jazzy voicings. Don't have long to wait now.  Mike

Totally agree about Reinhold.
Listening to the new one back to back with Reinhold and Ben's voice is so much lower these days - another big characteristic of their older stuff.
He's using different keys to write in as well.

I wish he'd come to the boards or someone would get a big interview with him about how his writing style has changed - if it indeed has besides less jazzier voicings...

Can't post any of that info just yet and definitely can't rip a song! haha

No harm in trying, right?

Sky High is pretty cool. Darren's song and reminds me a little of Hotel Lights. Great lyrics and great vibe. No pun intended, but it "floats" with those 10cc-ish backing vocals.

The only track I'm not entirely in love with is the title track for some reason.
However, I threw the new "Tell Me What I Did" in my tracklist and it fits fantastic. Should have been on the album!
I still think "Hold that Thought" is my favorite. Really excited to hear what other people think about the record.

I know that's said in jest but to be honest I find it pretty bloody annoying when artists ask people for money in advance to fund their new album, then send out review copies to people that didn't before the people that made it possible.

I don't really blame them.  If there wasn't Internet piracy then I wouldn't be impressed, but as it stands I think it's understandable that they'd want review copies out there, but only a minimal window pre-release where it might get onto the web in an unauthorised fashion...

The album is officially released in 2 weeks.  Could this week be the week that Pledger's get their downloads?

Has anyone heard any radio play yet for Do It Anyway?  It hasn't been played by the local alternative station hosting the BF5 show yet.

Really, can we just have it already?!  Besides, it's my birthday and getting the album that I helped fund would probably beat any other present I'd get  :P

Serious question though: how is it that journalists have apparently had this album for weeks and I still haven't found a single legit review on google?  Is their early receipt of the album made conditional on not publishing a review until a certain date?

2 items of note:

(1) Record Store Day is saying that select independent record stores will be giving out tour lithographs (the poster with the train and the red hobo robot) with purchase of TSOTLOTM.  Doesn't say what stores are participating.

(2) Article from Rolling Stone on the new album.  http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/ben-folds-five-craft-first-new-album-in-a-decade-20120905  (http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/ben-folds-five-craft-first-new-album-in-a-decade-20120905)

Doesn't really say anything that we didn't already know, although Ben offers up his interpretation of a couple of songs:

On opening track "Erase Me," the 45-year old contemplates a "disingenuous offer from one person to another in a dead relationship" over minor-chord mayhem; "Do It Anyway" puts forth his belief that although you may be "f*cking up on Earth, [that] doesn't mean that someone who's just a few years behind won't understand it;" "Draw Something" a gurgling disco-funk number, finds Folds crooning about drawing "dicks on the wall" when all else fails.

Hopefully that kind of shit will come to pledgers. Yes?
Or I'll just buy YET ANOTHER POSTER on tour.

I got an advanced copy too (not a journalist, just good searching/eBay-ing), and I'mma list my favorites now!

"Erase Me" - You've all already heard it, so you surely know why this is one of my favorites. I love the cinematic, Burtonesque, Elfman-y vibe it has.

"On Being Frank" has really neat lyrics. I really dig it. The chorus doesn't sound how I expected it to sound from the amazon preview, although in this case it's a good thing because it sounds better. I love the strings, I always love the strings. Everything in this song flows really well and I feel bad for the character in the song. That's a good thing, obviously.

"Draw a Crowd" - There's no way not to love this song. I knew the chorus before I heard it, but I still had a huge smile on my face hearing the lyric "Oh, if you're feeling small and you can't draw a crowd, draw dicks on the wall". And the "Jesusland" sounding harmonies are really nice sounding, but the "damn" separating them from the song (I think it's from Darren, maybe Ben) is hilarious. I think this may be my favorite song on the record, which I would not have expected coming into it.

Ever since I heard the preview of "Hold That Thought", I've been excited and it did not disappoint. It was very Rockin' the Suburbs (the album) sounding. That may seem disappointing to some, but really the RTS style was very close to BF5, and it's nice to hear an old school sounding Ben song.

And I will say I don't particularly care for the title track. It's not bad or anything, but it's the worst on the album (in my opinion). I enjoy it more on repeated listens, but it sounds like a Rock this Bitch or something. In terms of Folds-Hornby collaborations, there's stuff on Lonely Avenue that was better. Still a good song, just not what I hoped for. This certainly sounds like the Five, and I have to add that now that Darren's become a much better singer in general, his backup vocals in this are more recognizable and sound really awesome.

Yeah, it's weird. I was kind of mad when I saw it, but at the same time excited because I sprung at the chance! Whoever the seller was apparently sells promo cd's all the time. Like that's his specialty and he sells, like, ten at once.

Downloaded and about to listen, but I'm disappointed with the lack of lossless. They (PledgeMusic) had said the download would be available in flac. And I ordered the vinyl, which I can't play because I don't have a record player. Heh...

Still super excited to hear the album, so away I go...!

I guess it's up to the artist in question, but music only has been the norm with every PledgeMusic project I've signed up for to date...

Listened to it 3 times now.

Michael Praytor is definitely my favorite.  Haven't made up my mind after that.  It's between the title track, Hold That Thought, and Thank You For Breaking My Heart.

So incredibly glad Robert and Darren are back.  Their musicianship and their respective tones really make this album for me.  I really like the production too.  Someone brought this up before, but I truly don't mind that the BGV's aren't as up-front as they were on the first two BFF albums.  I personally think the mix is great.  Those bass riffs really shine through!

That is too bad.  Would regular store copies look the same too?  Would really like official lyrics somewhere -- if there aren't any, someone should get in Ben's ear on twitter at some point  :P

I got this CD at the merch booth in Central Park last Friday. This should be the same as the regular store copy.
I think TSOTLOTM Japanese edition includes the booklet with lyrics (officially checked by BF5), and its translation.

Hey guys. Haven't been here in jesus knows how long, and I don't know when I'll be back (I don't do much message boarding much anymore -- not to knock anyone who does!). I just wanted to say, I miss you all. I'm so happy there's a new album from the guys -- I never thought I'd see the day. BF5 helped me through some of the hardest of my years. Especially middle and high school. My god what a horror that can be without music.

With that said, I've only heard 'Do It Anyway' and 'Erase Me' from the new album. I really like DIA, but Erase Me has yet to grab me. I'm anticipating the moment when I arise out of laziest and order my own personal copy, as you have all done. Money's always tight over here; you know how it is. I'm sure the album is AMAZING -- I've seen some facebook statuses that heighten my excitement.

Just thought I'd stop by and give my two cents. If there's any message board that's going to bring me out of hiding, it's definitely the Burbs. I find it kind of funny that once I moved from the suburbs into a city that I stopped posting here. Ha! The little ironies in life.

Okay, enough ranting. Miss you guys, hope to see you at a show sometime if I can afford it!

Much love,
Chloe
