Hi gang,
Just wanted to share this eMail I sent to the PFoJ about ticket prices for the upcoming KC Show. Talking with some non-PFoJ folks, we realized that we paid far more for tickets than non-PFoJ folks had, and that didn't sit right with me. I don't want my money back, I don't want them to DO anything about it, other than pledge to do better for fans who expect more from a premium service like an artist's fan club.
Quote
Greetings,
I wanted to bring your attention to a pricing issue with tickets recently purchased for Ben Folds' upcoming Kansas City appearance that has left me scratching my head, wondering why the Ben Folds fan club has me paying nearly $10 over the price the general public is paying for the same general admission tickets.

The show in question is the upcoming appearance at 96.5 The Buzz's summer concert, "Buzz Under the Stars." Normally I avoid multi-act gigs like this, but I can't miss a Ben show, so I excitedly renewed my Fan Club membership for the chance to buy advance tickets. I've done this many times before, and usually the ticket prices balance out quite fairly with what Ticketmaster or the venue is charging, even when you include all the various fees for online ordering or mailing if the gig is out of town. Sometimes the Fan Club even raffles off Meet and Greets, so I've justified any price discrepancy as worth it for the contest (though many would argue opportunities such as that are why I pay membership dues to the fan club in the first place - and I can't say I disagree), but this has never resulted in me paying a "penalty" with a much higher ticket price than what the general public can buy the tickets for.

Here's a breakdown of pricing for the show:
Quote
Fan Club
$43.90

Ticketmaster
$50.70

96.5 Buzz Presale
$38.90

Venue Box Office
$35
Bottom line, the tickets should have been at least as inexpensive as the base cost of Ticketmaster tickets, which was $34. Ideally, the Fan Club should have gotten the same deal as the Buzz presale tickets at $25, at which point even with fees the people who pay a premium for the right to get tickets early for a general admission show would have been paying a fair price, instead of being stuck with the third best ticket buying option. As evil as they may be, at least Ticketmaster doesn't charge you to mail tickets. Having a will-call option would have been perfect - which is an option that's been available in the past.

Artist Arena has been doing a bang-up job running the fan club since it took over a few years back, but if this is the shape of things to come I must say I'm very concerned. I've been attending Ben Folds shows since 1994, and this marks the first time I've felt taken advantage of in any way by business decisions from folks he partners with. To say I am disappointed is an understatement.

Respectfully yours,
Justin Parlette
I don't want this to turn into a "thing," no protests or angry, spiteful letters, I just want to give the community a heads-up that changes made to the way PFoJ does ticketing might result in you paying more than others. For an assigned seating show that might be worth it, but for GA? Hardly.

Just got this from Artist Arena:
Quote
Dear Ben Folds fan,

As part of a special offer from the Artist Arena pre-sale, tickets to the July 23rd 2010 show will be offered at $10 less than originally advertised. As a result, you will be receiving a $10 refund on your order. The money will be put back onto the credit card used to make the purchase in about 7-10 business days.

Have a great day,
Artist Arena
No word yet on if this will be $10/ticket, or just a flat $10.

f*ck, missed the presale.  I assume this is all GA, right?  90% sure I'm going to this.

Also, anyone feel like putting a Folds fan up for a night down there, as it's a 7 hour drive for me... (or, I suppose, splitting a cheap hotel somewhere.  Or meeting somewhere and splitting gas, or well, anything that saves money)

We were cleaning out some kitchen drawers last night and came across our BAS sticker. We put it on our trash can. Now our trash can is crunk.

Hey gang... I might be going to ComicCon instead of this show (my web series has been chosen to screen there) if I can raise the funds to do so (there's a kickstarter where folks can contribute if they like to help cover promotional and travel costs http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jpar/dead-wait-at-comiccon-2010 (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jpar/dead-wait-at-comiccon-2010)) and if that's the case, I'll be selling my tickets. If you need 'em, send me a DM.

This is correct - though Jared won't be touring with Ben and company, so there will be someone new playing bass (in yo' face).

Why no Jared?  Is it temporary? Will Sam still be there?  I hate when Ben changes band members.  The shows tend to get more static and controlled.  Ben, Jared, and Sam had been really clicking well the last few tours.

Jared makes some funny faces..... but that's it. He's a great guy and all, but I think it'd be nice to have some more.... oh, I don't know.... Ben Folds Five type banter and whatnot between the guys on stage.

I miss that.

Now it's just Ben talking about stuff, then song playing. A little nod here to Sam. Ben talks about himself. More songs.  :-\

Should I go to this. I work about 15 mins away, but never been to a "festival" or multi-group deal. What are the pros (besides seeing Ben again) and the cons?
Title: Re: Live in Kansas City July 23rd
Post by: DAVID on July 18, 2010, 10:08:50 PM
cons are that it's probably going to be him playing less time than he normally would for a show.  pros are seeing Devo, Silversun, Against Me, and some other band.
Title: Re: Live in Kansas City July 23rd
Post by: jpar on July 19, 2010, 05:33:34 AM
Cons: It's hot as #$%& in KC right now. The venue is outdoors and is usually full of drunk a-holes who don't care about the concert. The acoustics are kinda lame. You'll be standing on pavement for hours. Folds will probably play a slightly truncated set.

Pros: DEVO. FOLDS.

You clearly see that you have no choice but to attend.
Title: Re: Live in Kansas City July 23rd
Post by: Kyle on July 19, 2010, 12:36:58 PM
Slightly truncated?  The damn 11:00 PM curfew w/ fine for City Market makes almost all headliners be abridged sets.  I heard it was $1,000 per minute past 11:00 PM.

I wish it was at The Crossroads.  No curfew, longer sets.

  Crash Kings - 6:15 to 6:45

Devo - 7:55 to 8:40
Silversun Pickups - 9:00 to 9:50

I don't know if I'm going to go. :(

Folds is the headliner, so headliners generally play last. Still, I'm surprised to see he only gets an hour and not 1.5 to play.
Title: Re: Live in Kansas City July 23rd

he's listed first (and largest) and pictured on the ad.  Usually means he's the big attraction, which often puts him at last in the play order

Here in Knoxville Flogging Molly opened for Passion Pit. I mean on the bill and everything it was Passion Pit in big bold letters but as I talked to everyone around me in the line the response I got the most after mentioning them was, "Who the f*ck is Passion Pit?"

Seriously, they got to play for like two hours or so I think and Flogging Molly only got an hour. I was a little miffed at this but at the same I kept wondering who UT put in charge of that. That guy should be fired seriously.

Ben played that exact same concert thing too in '06. UT's end of the year celebration thing. I can't remember what it's called.

Wait, yes I do, it's called Volapalooza. So lame.

Crowd was shit. Full of underage sh*theads who just wanted to get high and yell at their friends. But what do you expect from City Market? I probably won't be seeing Ben there again.

There kind of was at the Chicago St Pat's block party last year (where I was standing at least).  the group I was around had some kind of vague group swaying thing going on that got much more lively with picture window, of all songs.

A mosh pit and/or group sway more lively with picture window? I was initially surprised that one would be attempted at a Ben Folds show...but to have one appear (mosh and/or group sway)  to intensify during 'Picture Window' is even more unexpected.

There was a mosh pit-of-sorts that formed when Ben played in Minneapolis last October. In Orchestra freaking Hall of all places.

For an orchestra show. That was one of the best crowds we'd ever been a part of. Good times.

The City Market was hot.

I'm officially a Crash Kings fan - those guys are incredible. Loved their whole set.

I sort of tuned out during Against Me! I liked them better when they were Social Distortion.

DEVO was good. I wasn't blown away. They do what they do really well, and they're iconic, so I'm glad to have seen them, but I wouldn't seek out a DEVO show.

Silversun Pickups. *sigh* I had high hopes for this band, and they rocked. But then the lead guy did like three really long, really uncomfortable guitar solos, which was the most self-indulgent display of bullshittery I've witnessed in recent times. I wanted to like them, especially since they have a girl bassist who looked like a young Allison Janney from where we were standing, and that was cool. But lead guitar guy, you suck.

Ben Folds. Rocked. Per usual.

We did not do the whole front row thing. Six hours is far to long to stand in one place in the heat. Instead, we roamed around until Ben, then got right in the middle of a really sweaty crowd. It was stifling. We lasted about 30 minutes then had to roam around again.

At the Sunflower Music Festival in Lawrence, KS circa 1997 (1998?), the crowd was moshing to Missing the War, so the guys played three slow tunes in a row because moshing to ballads was "just about the dumbest thing someone could do." The crowd took the hint and eventually settled down, only to pick back up when they broke out One Angry Dwarf.

I loathe festival crowds.

It was, supposedly, the first time anyone had heard it outside of Ben and the band, and St. Pat's included 5 free drinks with entry, so...

Pretty sure that Underground got a little rowdy too.

I still consider that to be one of the worst Ben shows I was at.  Looked it up: May 16, 1998.  Extremely hot.  Short play time.  Crappy crowd.  However, from what I remember a great setlist.  Also, I remember Ben climbing on top of the speakers, up about 8' to throw the stool and the keys exploded off the piano.  That was awesome.
