Title: Vinyl
Post by: beamer on December 12, 2007, 02:07:02 PM
Did the Five ever release any of the albums on vinyl?

I would KILL for that shit.  Nothing on eBay .. I doubt it, but I'd love to be pleasantly surprised.

eBay is the place to find it. It pops up from time to time. That's how I have Waea and Messner on vinyl (as well as bfl and sfs). tracking down bf5 is going to be much harder. that, and for some reason I don't seem to be able to find rts on vinyl. they didn't put nbp out on vinyl did they?

I've got them all... most from Ebay

And no, they didn't release NBP on vinyl

i wonder why they didn't put out sssg on vinyl.

I'd guess it's probably not a profitable medium; it's mostly indie bands that put stuff out exclusively on vinyl these days - as bands get bigger, there are less vinyl releases.
Title: Re: Vinyl

yeah, but wouldn't then, they not have put out messner on vinyl? and since then?
Title: Re: Vinyl

Vinyl's in again.  Ironically, it's because of the digital age.  Everyone downloads the music and puts it on their iPods...but every now and then, a hard copy is nice to have and to hold.  So since you already have the MP3s, why not buy the vinyl?  It's definitely the coolest looking format.  A lot of them nowadays even come with free digital downloads.  So yeah, if any medium kills the CD, it's going to be vinyl.  I'm still not keen on iTunes.
Title: Re: Vinyl
Post by: beamer on December 18, 2007, 06:38:05 PM
Awesome.   Super cool.

Luke, that's an excellent summary of vinyl's current place in society.  Vinyl is the art on my wall.  I collect beautiful and trippy album artwork, as well as my favourite albums.  Hence my search for Reinhold Messner.
Title: Re: Vinyl
Post by: SinginJen on December 19, 2007, 10:21:47 AM
Yeah, that is definitely a good summary, I agree with you both.
I think it's just (for me) because vinyls represent a time when hard copies meant the most, especially with the art and such.  And it's true, more and more new vinyls are offering free digital downloads, so it makes the vinyl twice as awesome.

Plus, I just have this natural tendency to balk whatever more than 70% of the population is doing at any given time...if anything, the digital push has brought me toward vinyl  more.  Of course, digital has clearly brough me into a lot more new music, too...but let's not bring this debate all the way there.  It's the holidays for goodness sakes.

Y'all are silly. No one has a record player and you can't take that shit in your car. Only hippies buy them because that's how Jer Bear would have wanted it. or something. Gimme a CD if I like your band, if you're just okay I'll find a good quality MP3 and maybe make a mixtape(CD) or something. CDs have been around since the 70's and all other formats have come, gone, and are barely around.

That said if I had a record player, or if there was some special shit you could ONLY get on a vinyl, I'd buy it.

Like I did when the 7" for Landed came out, with Bitches Ain't Shit as a B-side. Even though I can't play it, I still had to have it.

Someday I'll find someone with a player and see how it sounds.

Or not.

Maybe I'll put it up on eBay and let the kids go nuts.

Title: Re: Vinyl
Post by: speedy_the_drummer on January 02, 2008, 04:22:12 PM
vinyl sounds way better than cd. vinyl is coming back and cds are going out because the get scratched and everyone has mp3 players. and most new vinyl comes with a link to download the cd in mp3 format for free.

plus, you can package more cool stuff in vinyl.

vinyl wins. cds lose. the end.

I just recently had to replace my turntable I'e owned since 1986 because the motor finally gave out and I couldn't track down a replacement part. It broke my heart. You can pick up a Sony from Best Buy for around $99.

first post...bringing this thread back from the dead!

i collect vinyl, and i'm now working on a ben collection! today i placed a few orders for the earlier BF5 singles (summer, underground, brick, battle). earlier this week i got the self-titled LP in the mail. maybe i'm working backwards on this (in terms of difficulty to find??). i also have SFS, the live record, and preordered the deluxe WTN.

anyway, i had a question... which 7" is jackson cannery on? is it rare or am i just slow? sorry, i'm a relatively new ben folds fan. excuse my n00biness.
Title: Re: Vinyl
Post by: jpar on August 31, 2008, 09:15:34 AM
The print run was about 500 (if I'm not mistaken), and this is what served as a demo tape for Ben Folds Five rather than a proper studio demo to shop around for record executives. They're hard to come by now, and have sold on eBay for as little as $75, and as much as $450. Original Jackson Cannery 7" singles have long been considered the holy grail for Ben Folds fans. Frank used to have a section for it on his site, but that seems to have 404ed.
Title: Re: Vinyl
Post by: Allison on August 31, 2008, 09:38:36 AM
The fact that you've been able to successfully track down a copy of the selftitled means something. Those regularly go for 200+ on ebay. Something my budget can't afford. And for some reason Rockin the Suburbs has been one that I still have not been able to get. I, myself, do not worry about the singles though, that's probably due to the fact that we in the US don't buy them much. I own one single, and it's the Christmas one, cause it's the only place it even exists.

there's the page about the jackson 7". is that version of "eddie walker" the one floating around on the beginnings, or is it actually pretty much unheard?

sweet. thanks for the info, guys!! the s/t albums are weird. they'll go for $200 one week (almost $400 once, if i remember correctly), and the next week they'll go for $75, $91, etc... i got lucky and got mine for $52 (it just ended on ebay last week). granted, i've only been watching BF5 vinyl on the 'bay for a little more than 4 months. chances are i'll never track down that jackson 7". agh!

The 7" version of JC is on NBP, with some of the intro cut out. This version of Eddie Walker differs from any other released version. I'll put the MP3s I made from my copy on WUWTL when I get back from vacation.

Okay, I'm back from the east coast and have uploaded both the Jackson Cannery and Eddie Walker tracks from the 7" to WUWTL.

These files are NOT digitally remastered. A friend of mine who works for a recording studio dumped them onto a CD for me a few years ago directly from my copy of the 7". I then encoded AAC files from the disk using iTunes. Any imperfections in the tracks are results of them coming off a record.

Enjoy.

I happen to know, for a fact, that Marc Chevalier is the sole reason that Ben's solo stuff (obv. starting with RTS) was put out on vinyl.

I miss that guy. He was keeeeeeeen.

read your production notes on the albums, son! He's there.

also-

He did live sound for the RTS tour and for awhile after that. His mop-topped mug is in the BFLive photo collage.

I'm sorry. I have the tendency to assume everyone is aboard my thought train.  :-\

well- I have a picture of Doug wearing a pair of tighty-whitie undies with the word "BALLS" written across the front, ON ben's piano.

I don't think Joe will be there judging from the tone in his email. He said, "sounds like fun" ha!

I'm REALLY hoping Doug will be there!

on a more related note: does anyone else's copy of TUBORM on vinyl have distorted timpani drums on Magic? Mine sounds HORRIBLE. Bad mastering, I think.
Title: Re: Vinyl

I'm pretty sure that last year I saw Joe working for Weird Al. Either that or he has an identical twin.

My vinyl of TUBORM skips during Army (but I think that's a cleaning issue). I'll take a better listen to the drums in Magic tomorrow, when I can use the record player without waking up everyone in my house.

I have a few vinyls, all autographed. Sadly (for me, maybe good for someone else) I think I will be willing to sell them for the right price...they're just sitting at my mothers house a few states away from me anyway.

I have:

Where's Summer B (autographed by all)
Reinhold (I think this is autographed by all, yeah I'm pretty sure)
Fear of Pop (autographed by Ben)

I think that's it...I might be forgetting one.

Someday someone will sell theirs. I had two at one point, and was going to sell my extra on eBay, but a dear friend pleaded and begged and I started feeling weird about selling it, so I gave it to him as a trade for some records and books I'd been lusting after. It was a good trade.

i'll end up picking up a copy of the In Love 12" some day. there are a whole bunch on GEMM. was that the only single pressed off of that album?

i figured that's how it is with the Jackson 7". most copies have already settled in the hands of die-hard fans and they're not gonna let them go. something I'm just gonna have to accept! i want one so bad. what did you pay for yours, jpar?

The most I ever spent on a record was probably $225ppd for a pair of colored Lawrence Arms full lengths, and i paid around $260 for the test pressings of Shook Ones' first three releases.

And just in case people don't know what a test pressing is, it's the VERY FIRST run of about 10 or so copies of a particular record, made to make sure the sound is good on the vinyl. Generally copies stay with the band, the label, or people who were closely involved with the release (more so with the record label if it's a major label release, I would think). So hopefully I'll be getting the test pressing for 2nd version of the Underground single! plus it's on green vinyl, and i don't think any Ben Folds vinyl has been pressed on color (unless I'm missing something).

I collect vinyl, so I'm kind of obsessive about it if I start a collection. I started selling off a bunch of my variants and stuff, so my list has been dwindling. But I guess I have SOME things to brag about, unless you guys don't really care about the bands I collect. ;D

The first one was a gift from my uncle in 1995, so whatever he paid for it at a show. $5 I think? The second was an eBay find, and that set me back about $80 in 1999.

So I finally got in the Underground test pressing... came in a blank sleeve with blank labels. I was kinda skeptical whether or not it was actually the test pressing for Underground, but I took a look at the matrix etchings, and they read: 7CAR008-A and 7CAR008-B. Sure enough, the music on it was Ben Folds Five. Pretty neat. Even if it isn't a test pressing, there probably aren't many Ben Folds/Five records out on colored vinyl...

There's actually a lot of pretty color swirls that you can see in the record when you hold it up to the light. I took these pictures with my laptop, though, so the effect isn't really captured. I'll try to take another, nicer one if anybody's interested.

Eh, I've got vinyl for WAEA, FOP, TUBORM, RTS, BFL, SfS, WTN, In Love 12", & Landed 7". I may have more, I've forgotten and I'm at work. WTFOMGLOLBBQ!!!!

I was really hoping that he'd make a little box set of the three EPs (or four, counting the Bens) on vinyl. Would've been nice.

Usually, if I have an artist,I go overboard on vinyl. Getting all the Radiohead was a challenge (and the Kid A and Amnesiac albums were a weird size... like 10", I think...). Ditto for Belle and Sebastian. It was actually easier to find all the Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd than it was to get the other stuff.

just got messner in the other day!

I got my messner on ebay for like 10 bucks.
Of course, then had to pay for it to ship from Japan. But still.

What I can't find in a reasonable price range is the s/t. That vinyl normally goes at least 60+

Anyone else have the promo-only Bizarre Christmas Incident 7"? B/W Lonely Christmas Eve? I see a couple copies up on eBay for $15-$25.

My collection is:

Messner
RTS (which I bought strictly for Hiro's Song)
Bizarre Christmas Incident 7"
Landed 7"
SFS
WTN

oh god, no. do you think me mad, sir? no, the local store has ben folds live on vinyl, and that's what i've yet to pick up. i've never actually seen messner on vinyl (sealed, anyway), so i guess i should break down and get on ebay.

is that the best place, or does anyone have advice for online vinyl stores? or is it better to simply have one of my local guys order it in? especially for out-of print stuff (i'm caught up on most solo stuff, but i have nothing from the five), i'm unsure of where to go.

there is a messner on gemm right now for $33 from an australian seller. it's like $11 shipping to the states, so ~$45ppd. about the going rate for the record on ebay.

in other news, i got ben, jared, and sam to sign a few of my records! sam signed silverman, too, even though he didn't play on it. he signed on ben's crotch. ben also drew on his face on silverman. he said he never did that before, but i wouldn't be surprised if that was a lie and he had. ben also signed my underground single! :)

Nice! I was able to track one down from a UK seller for about $18 shipped. Only thing is that it doesn't include the jacket. Some wouldn't bother buying it, but as long as I have it on wax, I'm fine. I really like the Foo Fighters song that's also on that soundtrack.

I just won a Jackson Cannery 7" on eBay for $61!!!!  Soooo happy!!!  I was willing to shell out a couple hundred on it.  I was so nervous as the auction was ticking down.  It went from 0 bids and $20 to 8 bids and $61 in about 45 seconds.  According to the seller, this copy was once in the hands of Caleb Southern and he gave it to his neighbor at the time.  That neighbor then gave it to this current seller.  Pretty cool little history I think.  I'm going to try and get it signed when I see him on April 30th at UMD.  Will post pics when it arrives!

^^ Nice!

As an update to my collection, nothing new, except I got another copy of the Godzilla album with a cover this time. Haha. Also got Ben to sign my WAEA, BF5, and RTS LPs.

Damn how did you have so many things signed?  Did he sign them all at the same time or have you met him multiple times after shows?  I'm impressed.  Anyway, here are two new additions to my BFF vinyl collection:

Thanks! I've met him a couple of times, took more time than most people getting stuff signed. But at least while he does that, I have more time to converse with the guy.

Just for kicks, here's an updated photo of my Folds collection. Same shit, just better picture. This was taken before the three LPs I was just talking about got signed.

Oh yeah, I forgot this is missing the Godzilla soundtrack. I didn't realize that until I had put everything back on the shelves and felt too lazy taking it all back out.

Damn, that is an awesome collection.  What are the two white ones in the 3rd row though?  It's hard to read but do they both say Fear of Pop?  As well as the green vinyl and the bottom right hand corner 7"?  Hopefully one day I'll have a similar collection!

Thanks again! Yeah, those are Fear Of Pop "In Love" remixes (one with a bunch, and the other with just the Thievery Corporation remix on it). The green one is a test pressing for Underground (Full Version--the one to the right of it). I found it on GEMM for like $35... I was so stoked. Haha.

Some pretty exciting news from Ben's twitter today:

"Yes, re-releasing all back catalogue with proper vinyl included part of master plan - part of why I'm getting vinyl routine together" (in response to jpar's tweet)

and...

"Already begun working with Legacy Records on re-releases and will be doing vinyl using what we're learning, mastering quieter when necessary"

If this is really happening I'd be so happy.  It would give me a great chance to get the S/T.  Hopefully the original pressings still maintain their value but I think this is great news.  I just tweeted at him asking if he'd release the singles again on 7"...hopefully he responds!

I'm stoked for these possible reissues, and really hope he mines the archives for some bonus downloads included with purchase. Or hell, just remaster the Caroline records and Messner for CD release, too, and give them the deluxe treatment. Messner deserves it, and there is that pesky reunion show floating around...

Ah, I'm getting greedy.

Wow, any bonus material would be incredible.  I would love to see some unreleased demo tracks or live recordings.  And this announcement was such a coincidence because I JUST started collecting BF/F vinyl a couple months ago.  I did ask him on twitter though if he'd re-release all the 7" singles but he doesn't seem to respond to me haha.  Would you be willing to ask him that via tweet?

I have no idea why he sometimes responds to me, but I think it might be I just catch him at the right time and ask him a question he's in the mood to answer. Personally, I don't think it makes much sense to re-release singles given the costs involved, but that's just me and maybe Mr Folds will tell us all differently.

So last week Ben came to DC with Nick to promote the new album.  Nick read an excerpt from Juliet Naked, Ben played 4 or so songs, and they did an on stage interview for about 30 minutes.  It was a unique but enjoyable format and after that they did a meet and greet, which I had no idea about until they announced it.  I was freaking out seeing as I'd been to 6 Ben concerts before but had never met him.  I got a picture with him and got the S/T and my 2nd Jackson Cannery signed.  Definitely a really cool experience.  I also picked up Where's Summer B? 7" and Ben Folds Live on vinyl which finally completes my BFF vinyl discography collection (to my knowledge).

to anyone who has the jackson cannery 7", i'd like to ask a question that it seems no one has ever asked: whats "eddie walker, this is your life" sounds like????? from what ive heard its a different recording than the "eddie walker" take on NBF, and i'd love to know more about it. the fact that its only available on that elusive vinyl....

Many years ago I visited a recording studio in Lawrence and had my copy of the 7" preserved on CD. I then ripped the audio, and those files should now be on WUWTL. Download and enjoy.

What's the going rate for Fear Of Pop Vol 1 on vinyl? I know it's funny because I wrote about having it earlier in the thread, but I'm planning to move across country and I'm thinking about getting rid of some stuff that I simply just don't listen to...

If anyone is interested, I'd rather sell all three FOP records together, as opposed to just the LP. But I'm sure that something could be worked out. I might sell my Ben 7"s too, but I haven't given that too much thought.

any word on the reissues of his older albums on vinyl yet? i know hes a busy guy and all but i'd love to see this set in motion. i dont even know why they'd need remastering or anything, just put them out as they are. the production on all the "five" records is top notch.

if anything, id like to see some exclusive commentary included in the record sleeves, maybe a little paragraph talking about each song, explaining its inspiration and whatnot

remastering be would needed since vinyl has a different inherit 'EQ' than a cd.  Also, compression and levels would need to be adjusted.

I remember being very excited about this when he mentioned it about a year ago.  I wouldn't hold my breath on these releases though, I doubt they'll be coming any time soon.  Ben seems to have a history of not following through with these sorts of things.  Granted I'm sure he's extremely busy.  Maybe after this tour is over he'll start on some reissues.  He also said he'd be releasing reunion footage on a TUBoRM reissue but that hasn't happened either.  I'm curious as to whether those tapes he went through last week will ever be released (like he said they would be).

That Pots & Pans vinyl was something I never dreamed I'd own.  Seeing it pop up on eBay was very cool.  And speaking of pre-BFF memorabilia, I won Toxic Popsickle's Friends of Zid cassette on eBay awhile back too.  As for your tour-used stool, that's awesome its own right.  What's the story behind it?  Which concert was it at?

so the self titled Ben Folds Five album was reissued sometime in the past couple years. I just noticed this about a month ago and wondered why it seemed to go under the radar. I read a bunch of reviews and it seemed like their was a huge complaint about the sound quality. Hesitant as I was, I still purchased it. It sounds just fine to me, I don't see the big deal.

Anyone know anything about this release? Was it part of the original intention to reissue the old albums? Why wasn't it announced?!
