Here's my gig summary for the year so far (including ones I've already seen since the New Year arrived). Headliners are in bold, supports (where applicable) aren't. Some upcoming gigs don't have confirmed supports...:

January:
19th - Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, Walter Schreifels, Jeremy Warmsley @ Wolverhampton Wulfrun Hall
23rd - Larrikin Love @ HMV Birmingham (in-store event)
28th - Ben Folds, Eef Barzelay @ Wolverhampton Civic Hall

February:
12th - The Reflections, Fell City Girl, Roman Candle @ Hoxton Bar and Kitchen, London (this was a weird one, in that three bands played, but the first two weren't supporting the last... I went to see Roman Candle, who were first on, but stayed for the others. Roman Candle were undoubtably best)
13th - Duke Special, Stephanie Dosen @ Birmingham Glee Club
14th - Guillemots, Richard Burke @ Birmingham Carling Academy

March:
6th - Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals' frontman), Voice of the seven woods, 9 Bach @ Birmingham Glee Club
15th - Ricky Gervais, Robin Ince @ Birmingham NIA
26th - The Shins, Viva Voce, Jeremy Warmsley @ Wolverhampton Wulfrun Hall

April:
8th - Aqualung @ Birmingham Carling Academy 2
22nd - Fields, Hush the many (heed the few), Alberta Cross @ Birmingham Glee Club

May:
16th - Duke Special @ Birmingham Carling Academy 2
23rd - Built to Spill @ Nottingham Rescue Rooms

Me and a friend are also talking about going to see The Young Knives at the end of May... I'm hopeful that more gig opportunities will arise over the next few months... Last year, I went to something like a gig a month; this year, I'm aiming for 2 or 3, or more. Preferably more, actually. Nobody I wanted to see played here last summer (I had almost 6 months between two gigs... May to October), so somebody better sought that out...

In all, the gig I'm most looking forwards to is Built to Spill. Then The Shins.

BtS, that's impressive. I'm jealous. And I'm far poorer than you.

Past already:
Jan 10- Mute Math/The Fray (I worked the show.)

Here's my upcoming show schedule. After missing Kweller earlier this month....

April 2- Ben Folds
April 20- Aida (the musical by Elton John and Tim Rice)

Yeah, that's it. I'm looking into driving down (while grad school shopping) to NC for a lovely April 27 show. :)

And I'll probably hit up at least one of the Chicago Folds/Mayer dates. If I'm not working at that very venue (I have an application in) and then well I'll see lots of people.

Bizarre - that bar's right round the corner from where I work.

Anyway, my gig-going this year, past and to come:

January
17. Foy Vance @ La Pigalle club
23. Ben Folds, Eef Barzeley @ Hammersmith Apollo

February
4. OK Go, Quit Your Day Job, New York Fund @ Koko club, Camden
8. The Decemberists, Lavender Diamond @Shepherds Bush Empire
16. Regina Spektor, Love Is All, Brinkman, Only Son @ Astoria
21. Duke Special, Stephanie Dosen @ ULU

March
15. The Arcade Fire, Patrick Wolf @ Brixton Academy
30. Barenaked Ladies, Boothby Graffoe @ Hammersmith Apollo

April
11. Patrick Wolf, bishi @ Astoria
12. Aqualung @ ULU

May
14. Foy Vance @ La Pigalle club
15. Duke Special @ Shepherds Bush Empire

September
28. Joanna Newsom @ Royal Albert Hall

All my gigs were/are in London, as I'm too lazy to go anywhere else (and everybody comes here, which is good).

I think best so far was the Decemberists, although it's a close call. I'm really looking forward to seeing Patrick Wolf (he was great supporting the Arcade Fire) and BNL, who are always great.

I wanted to see The Arcade Fire, but they sold out fast... You should go and see Wilco in May!

Post by: Carolyn on March 19, 2007, 01:49:05 PM
I'm seeing... Bob Dylan (instead of the shins), Explosions in the Sky (or maximo park, they're on the same day too), Midlake, The Who and i'm going to rock werchter which has lots of good bands. I'll probably also go to Pukkelpop which is the other festival here.
Might see Built to Spill or/and Wilco depending on exams.

I'd like to see Dave Matthews Band too cos i saw him solo a couple of weeks ago and that was rather amazing.

I need to stop spending money so i can save it for the summer holidays.

4/14 Ben @ Ohio Wesleyan

That's pretty much it.  Probably try to catch the Ben/Mayer tour in Ohio or Michigan, but that'll depend on my internship situation.

Do people really plan out a year's worth of concerts so quickly?
Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???
Post by: melissa on March 19, 2007, 05:59:20 PM
apparently...
i'm going to see Ben in Normal, Illinois on april 2.
Brand New and Kevin Devine in New Orleans on april 12.
bowling for soup in New Orleans in late may. (<- not by choice.  my best friend is making me go since i'm making her go to Ben)  ugh...
gym class heroes in baton rouge in 2 weeks.

uhh...others too.

low on the cash flow as well.
so far alls I've gots is Ben in May and Weird Al this summer (since he finally put up dates in New England, wheeeee).  I might see Phantom Planet if they tour for their new album, which would probably be this summer.  We'll see what the fall tour season brings...although I'll probably have 0 time and 0 dollars cause of grad school.

"Weird Al" Yankovic - March 24, Canberra Theatre, Canberra.

That's it.  That's all I care about seeing, anyway.  CAN'T FREAKING WAIT!  4 days.

Nah. Shows are announced all the time, which is why my calendar only stretches to May. Built to Spill had been announced for ages, but I had to get clearance from school and permission from my dad, because it's in Nottingham... Aqualung and Duke Special were both announced, like, last week...

I would go see Brand New and Kevin Devine, but I hate Brand New. It ain't worth the two hour drive to see Kevin Devine open, no matter how much I love him.
Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???
Post by: melissa on March 20, 2007, 12:32:10 PM
i don't really care for Brand New either.  but the show's only 45 minutes from my apartment and it's only 15 bucks.  i think it's worth it to see Kevin.

Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???

the hard thing for me, with shows, is that most bands/artists who actually do make it out to Oregon come to Portland. Well, that's two hours away, which may not sound like much, but when you dont have a car, or a liscense, then you're screwed. And if it's during school/work time. just a few more years and i'll be good to go, i hope.

No, I love Death Cab, The Postal Service, etc. - I just didn't agree that him joing The Bens would necessarily make them a credible band when they already (in my opinion) are. I mean, if he did join The Bens, that'd be awesome, but it'd make scheduling, etc. wayyyyyy more difficult. I'd love to see him solo, but tickets looked pretty expensive (and, obviously, he's not playing here...).

Welcome to the boards oujoe. Just wondering what you thought of the mute math show....

and, this Weird Al talk reminds me, Weird Al is playing Summerfest the same day as Ben. This makes me dilemna filled.

I'm seeing Ben Kweller in just over a week as part of Blues n Roots festival!!  Yessssss! Would love it even better if I didn't have to see him as part of the festival though.  I want a BK-headliner show!   John Mayer's at the Blues n Roots as well but not the same day as BK  :(

I'll send on your apologies Allison, for missing his gig the other week.

Ummm...The Whitlams with WASO in November.  Saw Augie March with WASO last month.  Saw INXS last week.
*Mutters*...Must investigate who's coming to town between BK and Whitlams.  It's a very big gap with no concerts to attend..

i didnt get to see much of the mute math show, the person i was going with who got me the free tickets didnt want to show up till later, and i didnt want to complain about that considering our seats were in the 7th row. but what i did see i did like i must say.

Okay, next question... Who are y'all most EXCITED about seeing? I'm sure there'll be some Bens in there for all y'all lucky people going to see him... For me it's Built to Spill without a doubt... I never thought they'd come here! After them, Sparklehorse, who I narrowly missed out on last October (it was an 18+ venue and i wasn't 18 till November...) so I was relieved to hear this afternoon that they would be coming back this year :)

not trying to add insult to injury, but they were like 15 or 20 bucks here... that's something around 8 pounds i believe...

Mute Math was just in the UK. They're fantastical. I've worked with them. They're nice. They're like an Electronic BF5, at least in their energy. They're insane. I love them!

so, not only is Mute Math playing with Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin.  they're also playing with The Cinematics.  3 bands that i love in one show.  15 dollars!  i'm stoked!

the only downside...it's the monday of finals week.  :-(  luckily enough, i don't have a final the next day!  YAYS!

unfortunately, i can't go see Modest Mouse because i have 2 finals the next day.  one of which is at 7:30 in the AM.  ugh...

Modest Mouse are only playing two shows over here; one is "All Tomorrows Parties" which is some sort of festival that actually looks quite good; Built to Spill, Sparklehorse and Wilco are all playing it, too. Unfortunately, it's in a random (by my standards, at least) location and tickets are rather a lot of money. The only other show MM are playing is the same day as Built to Spill are on in Nottingham and is in London... Woe is me.

Well, Kweller said last year that he wanted to do ACL again next year, with a t-shirt that was covered in blood stains... that says something about surviving ACL without a nosebleed. Heh.

I'd love to go down to it. But, one. it's far. Two, it's in the beginning of the semester. Sad.

Lollapalooza's line up is sad this year. I mean, yeah, I wouldn't mind seeing some of the bands, but not for 200 bucks. Eep. I wish I'd known about it last year, before the day of. Awesome line up last year. Kweller, Bird, Dresden Dolls, Regina, Eels, Stars, Iron & Wine, Built to Spill, Flaming Lips.... just to name a few..... and not kidding on the Few. I watched Kweller and Bird live from my computer though! heh.

That is a f*cking awesome line-up. The best festival I've known of over here was another that I only found out about last minute; the line-up was The Who (headlining), The Flaming Lips, Eels, Super Furry Animals and The Zutons. I'm sure other people would disagree and say they've been to awesomer ones (I know Carolyn has, but they've always had some sort of downside... Like Panic! At the Disco), but those people are liars.

haha belgian festivals are the best (not that i would know any different) but they always have good bands, and aren't too big. There's about 4 I want to go to this summer... but think i'll only manage 3 due to time/money.

tickets are $145 for ACL, which is alot for not yet knowing which bands you're gonna get.
i'm rather scared about throwing up that much money.  besides the fact that my friends are stinky and probably wouldn't go with me.   :-\
Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???

Think of it this way, if you buy the tickets now and it sells out, then turns out that the bands will be awesome and you wanna see them, this is GOOD.

If you buy the tickets now and it sells out, then turns out that the only bands playing will be shit and you don't wanna see them, this is BAD, but also GOOD, as, with the advent of EBay, you will likely be able to make considerable profit on your ticket.

Win-win. Aside from the fact it's expensive...

oo that had tom petty and the heartbreakers last year. I would pretty much travel across the world to see them...
3 days for just over 100 euros ($145) is pretty good, but i guess if you don't know the bands, its slightly risky.
I want to go...

That's how all those blasted festivals are. Lolla's like that. And I was tempted, but I'm glad I didn't. I'm just going to apply for a unpaid internship there instead.

Yes. nod nod.

I would apply to ACL if it wasn't the first weekend of school. Drat.

i'll be working at the radio station, and it's only during school hours (so no late nights or weekends), i'll be getting paid twice what i do now for doing less work than i do now, and i get school credit. plus, i'm guaranteed the job for 2 years (until i graduate).

well, it's not actually a radio station FOR the high school. it just so happens to be right behind my school, and allows classes for students. but it's still just like any other station.

here's from the website of the station krvm.org:

"Licensed to and owned by School District 4J, Lane County's largest school district, KRVM offers an opportunity for students to learn radio broadcasting in a real working environment. Our mix of education in public broadcasting and an adult listenership provides a marketable service that generates about 40% of our funds from underwriter support. The remaining funds are provided by listener support and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, our most recent funding source. KRVM receives minimal funding from the school district."

Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???
Post by: general_apathy (Chloe) on April 17, 2007, 06:45:34 PM
Well, the students, unfortunately, don't pick the music. BUT, I constantly tell the program director of the music I listen to, and he usually adds it. Plus, this station plays a lot of the bands/artists I listen to anyway. Like all the Bens are played regularly.

Andy... I seem to recall you expressing a desire for Someone Still Loves you Boris Yeltsin to visit these sacred shores. Good news on that count, as I noticed UK dates on their myspace:

6 Jun 2007     20:00
   Head of Steam    Newcastle, UK
8 Jun 2007    20:00
   Bardens Boudoir    London, UK
9 Jun 2007    20:00
   Cavern    Exeter, UK
10 Jun 2007    20:00
   Windmill Brixton    London, UK
11 Jun 2007    20:00
   The Hope    Brighton, UK

None of them are near me.

I'm waaaaaay late to this conversation, but here's my concert plate for this year so far anyway, if you don't mind.  :)

Jan. 14th - The Tragically Hip @ Rexall Place
Jan. 23rd - Video Games Live @ the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium

Feb. 25th - Wolfmother @ the Edmonton Events Centre

May 17th - Danny Michel @ Convocation Hall
May 23rd - The Killers / Hot Hot Heat @ Rexall Place

June 24th - Roger Waters @ Rexall Place

I missed out on the Feist gig in May, which sold out before I even heard about it.  Just waiting for the White Stripes to announce their Canadian tour (Ottawa was announced today!) and I'll be all over that.  Too bad Ben almost never comes to Canada (and when he does, it's a 48 hour drive!).

February:

April:

how was Ricky?
Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???
Post by: DrAlexHaleIII on April 20, 2007, 12:18:36 PM
Ricky was amazing. He did a lot of controversial jokes about diseases and stuff, and some pretty good observational stuff - my favourite was his mention of a certain tabloid newspaper over here, "The Sun", which featured a cover story on reality TV "star" Jade Goody with the headline "Racist scum" in the same edition as an article about a Chinese snooker player with the headline "Pot Noodle"...

I'm very much looking forwards to Guster; when they said they were going to be announcing UK dates, I was so excited, then it turned out to be just two dates in London. Luckily, my dad is a music fan, and appreciated the fact that they may not be back for a while, so agreed to take me, doing what we did in February - he's going to go to work, and I'm going to stay at the hotel and watch kids TV all day study for my exams.

Another new addition is Modest Mouse - they announced a tour earlier this week which was amazing luck (they were previously only scheduled to play the Royal Albert Hall - in London - on the day I'm going to see Built to Spill in Nottingham... Plus, it was sold out...), especially as I only started listening to them last week (bought the new album on impulse, went out the next day and bought two more... They WERE bargains...).

And of course Kate Walsh. None of you'll know her, but she's a myspace friend who I used to talk to all the time last year. When we went to see Aqualung, I had a big suprise, as she was supporting. I'm taking my friend for his birthday ('cause he secretly has a crush on her, but I can read him like a typed doctor's note). I thought I should mention her 'cause 'cause otherwise she'll be lonely.

Oh, yeah, and MuteMath are back soon. Tickets go out next Friday.

...I feel kinda bad for complaining about gigs never being here... Believe me, though, if I didn't have such an awesome dad, I really would be screwed.

Just booked tickets for more gigs:

May 17: Voxtrot, Lincoln Brown @ the Borderline, London
September 7: Regina Sepktor @ the Royal Festival Hall
October 2: The Decemberists @ the Royal Festival Hall

Very excited about Voxtrot as I missed them last time they were in the UK owing to their gig clashing with another I was going to.

And Alex - I know Kate Walsh as I too saw her supporting Aqualung. She was v good and my friend bought her album. She reminds me a lot of Gemma Hayes (I fear this comparison will be lost of our international friends).

But still no-one wants to go and see Aimee Mann with me. Maybe I'll just have to go by myself.

Pre-sale tickets just went on sale this morning and I snagged these shows:

The White Stripes
Tue     07/10/07           Moncton, NB             Moncton Coliseum
Wed     07/11/07          Charlottetown, PEI    Charlottetown Civic Centre
Fri     07/13/07             Halifax, NS               Cunard Event Centre
Sat     07/14/07            Glace Bay, NS          Savoy Theatre

I'll be flying to the other side of the country to see these shows, but it'll be worth it!  I may also go to the Yukon if I can get tickets.  The Glace Bay show is an 800-seat theatre for the band's 10th anniversary and I've got 4th row seats!
The only band/artist I'd go all out like this is for The White Stripes and Ben Folds, but I doubt even Ben would tour the arctic.  Guess I'll have to wait for next year's "experience".

I don't write extensively about every show I go to, because I go to a lot and some are less exciting than others. Seeing Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly for the second time, for example, just didn't compare to seeing the Folds. Seeing Muse last November just didn't compare to, um, anything. By which I mean I had a horrible time. Which suprised me, as, despite the fact I'm not really a huge Muse fan, I had heard nothing but praise for their live shows. It was the most boring concert I have ever attended.

Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???
Post by: DrAlexHaleIII on May 11, 2007, 03:41:47 AM
I wanted to kill myself after seeing them. Everybody raved on about how good they were, but I thought they were terrible. It probably has to do with the fact that I was seated, really far back, at one of the biggest venues in the UK, but a month later I saw Kasabian at the same place (and, as a side note, I prefer the music of Muse - though, really, I'm not THAT fond of either) and I was sat and far back, etc., etc., but I really enjoyed it.

The real reason is likely that I was sat next to my sister who was a constant annoyance, and that was the only concert I've ever sat next to her at (we've been to three together). She kept telling me off for singing along, dancing, clapping and cheering, even though we were on the BACK ROW so if I looked an idiot, nobody would see. She was recording it on her phone and acting like me singing along would mess up the recording, whereas the 20,000 people in front of us were perfectly fine to do so.

However, I must make it clear that the people who claim Muse are the best live act ever are very sadly mistaken. The atmosphere would probably be good in the pit, and they had a lot of gimicks, but they really fell short of artists like Ben, The Flaming Lips and Guillemots who never fail to blow me away. In short, I probably wouldn't pay to see them again, though I must admit, I don't think it's the band's "fault" that I had such a crappy time.

But... She's on Jonathan Ross this Friday... Which is filmed on Thursday... But repeated on Saturday... So that must mean she'll be here till Monday. Or possibly Tuesday. Not Wednesday, though. And no way in hell Thursday.

No, I don't know where I am, either.

there's some stuff coming up this summer that im thinkin about... Feist in particular. I know for sure I'm defnitely attending this years Siren Music Festival in Coney Island. I heard it may be the last year they do it so I'm hoping they go all about and make this one blow every other years Siren completely away.

how did i forget... I'm actually venturing to Warped Tour this summer after many years of not being able to stand it. But one of my new favorite bands is playing. they're called The Automatic Automatic from the UK. I was visiting a friend in Bristol over the winter and she turned me on to them so I'm pretty stoked I'll get to see em this summer. Check out their song "Monster" on purevolume, it is a quality track.

i looked over the bands for warped tour and i just don't like it. there are a handful of bands i'd go see if they were playing in a club somewhere but i'm not paying to stand in the sun, get burnt and drink $5 bottles of water. blah.

i am however paying to go stand in the sun and drink expensive water at "king fest" in king city. the salads, joel plaskett emergency, the trews [who i don't like] and sloan.  \m/
happy june to me.

Ok, here is the list of concerts I'm seeing this summer. It's short, but sweet, and two of them are FREE!

June 30th, Emerald Theatre in Mt. Clemens, MI ~ Paul Rodgers! This will be free show #1

July 5th, Motor City Casino Stage in Detroit, MI ~ Weird Al! This will be free show #2

September 23rd, George E. Potter Center in Jackson, MI ~ Weird Al! This I have to wait to hear about tickets, since it's not for a while yet.

I'm going to all three shows with my friend, Kari. She has a pair of jeans signed by Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen, Ben Elton, and she wants to add Paul Rodgers' sig, if possible. She'll start a new pair before we see Al, and she told me I could sign them first. hehe! Anyway, I'm pretty excited!

September 20 - Andrew BIIIIIRRRRRRDDDDDDD.

Oooo. Man. This is getting to be exciting.

And how are you getting  into those shows for free?
Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???
Post by: algonacchick on May 22, 2007, 10:44:31 AM
Well, I'm not sure why the Paul Rodgers one is free, is just is, but the Weird Al concert is part of Comerica CityFest. All the acts are playing for free. *It's a five day event* Is that cool or what? The way the festival makes their money is by having a marketplace, where people can buy artsy stuff, and of course, the tastefest, where you buy tickets, and use so many to either taste a little food, or eat a full portion. Area restaurants each have their own booths, where you can sample food. I'm looking forward to that, too! mmmmm!

That's sweet. Both are coming through Milwaukee, and cost monnnnnneeeeey. Lots. Well. Al's only the 15 dollar admission to Summerfest. AND on the same day as Ben. Which. Ugh. That's evil of them. Luckily Ben's around 8, 8:30 and Al's at 10, all the way across the grounds. Boo. I won't be able to see. But whatever.

It's a stupid, satanic tactic that festival planners deploy to keep crowds to the minimum. Basically, they put two acts on at roughly the same time (or at least far appart enough to make it super difficult to see both) that have considerable fan spill-over. They did it here at Leeds last year, by putting The Flaming Lips on at the same time as Super Furry Animals (who the Lips themselves are friends with and intended to go and see). It's a really stupid tactic and they only do it to control the crowds. It's part of the reason that I don't go to festivals (the other two being that I don't have money and I can't get to them).
Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???

yeh, another example of that is putting LCD Soundsystem at the same time as the chemical brothers at one of the festivals i'm going to. Both dancey acts so you'd think they would put it one after the other. grrrrr.

I don't have this problem any other night.  Because Summerfest's stages are kind of genre based. And then there's the main headliner stage. And that's where Mayer and Ben are. Because one night the dilemma is Built to Spill or Ludacris. Yeah, no problem there. Ha. They have Panic! and Guster on the same night.... oh wait. That's not an issue either....
Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???

Me too. Specially seeing as I'm working at this one. So I really don't know what I'm going to see. Except Ben. I'd damn well either be working at that stage that night, or have the night off. Even if just for an hour or so to see Ben. haha. I don't care about Mayer.

Though. Chloe you'll have to tell us if they do something together. Mayer's a huge Folds fan, so who knows?

Built To Spill are amazing live. Though, Doug NEVER seems to speak between songs; just a nervous little "thanks" at the end of every one. Also, he asked for some towels and apologised to people who were yelling "We've been waiting 10 years, Doug!!!". They played stuff from all over their career - oddly enough, no "Conventional Wisdom" (which is the current single apparantly). Also they cut "Distopian Dream Girl" out of their set, but did a half an hour long rendition of "Randy Described Eternity". Awesome, though. Absolutely awesome.

I saw keane last night at a nice theater.  They were really good.  the light show was amazing.

You know, the annoying thing is, everyone here gives me shit about listening to keane, but they come up on pandora alot as being similar to ben folds... if you ask me, i think it's more of a matter that alot of people here are kinda anti-pop, while in reality someone like ben lee is slowly sliding into the pop scene...
Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???

Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???

i dont think people dislike keane because they're anti-pop, they dislike keane because keane are awful. that's my opinion anyway. i think their music is boring, and the lack of bass doesn't work for them. my band doesn't use bass either, but i use the right patches on my synths to make up for it. i think it's disgusting as well that back in 2005 at the wireless festival in hyde park london, keane were supported by artists like rufus wainwright and supergrass! that's an insult!
Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???

whoa whoa.. i never said they were anti pop... i'm saying some people are anti pop... but actually funny you mention rufus wainright, they're big fans of his, and they did a song with him before... he guested on it, it was called try again.

I've stopped calling them that now, but I'm still not impressed.
Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???
Post by: whenlabratsgobad on May 29, 2007, 08:04:19 AM
Keane isn't bad (although Under the Iron Sea pales in comparison to Hopes and Fears), but people need to recognize where the talent is.  People (read: girls) are always swooning over Tom Chaplin (the vocalist), but Tim (keyboards) is the most talented.  He writes most of the songs, plays the piano (which is a Yamaha CP-70, if anyone was curious) and synths, played the pre-recorded bass tracks that are used live.  Maybe it's just the Ben fan in me but multi-instrumentalists = way cool.

I did a project on "Somewhere Only We Know" for my recording technologies class this past semester.  I guess they layered like four different pianos in the studio.  It was interesting.

Oh, I don't think they're bad.  I enjoy them, just nothing spectacular to me.
I do enjoy their video for "Is It Any Wonder," pretty nifty concept.

So I'm seeing Janeane Garofalo and Patton Oswalt (and Michael Showalter?) do stand up next month.  This was decided before I did a rough budget for next year.  Oh man is it ugly.  Music money is going to be so little (if at all), I don't even want to think about it.  argh.

You prove a good point.  He even does the drums initially and gives them to the other guy where he then reinterprets them.  Tom's sorta there to the talker and energetic.  When i saw them, Tim wasn't as talkative or anything... i don't think he ever is.  But he's definatly talented, and i've wanted a CP70/80 for a while now since i heard them use it.  I think it's a great instrument and they definatly have creativity as far as using distortion pedals and the synths.

Yeah, I should've mentioned, comedy shows are included in my music funds/budget (so really, my shows/CDs budget).  So I am definitely going to enjoy this show, it'll be my last for a while.  I'm psyched about Garofalo especially.

That's awesome your friend is going to be in a class with Showalter; I saw him, Eugene Mirman (I'm a large fan), and Leo Allen do their thing last May and oh man LOVE.  Half the reason I'm going to the Garofalo show is because MSho might be opening.  Oh don't get me started, haha.

Hopefully it will be a small venue, too; it's an 18+ one (which generally aren't huge; the biggest one that I know is about 500 people I think) and nobody in London seems to have heard of it (I mentioned it to a friend who actually LIVES 5 minutes away from it and he'd never heard of it!). Last night I saw Guster in possibly the smallest venue of all time (200 people). It was awesome.

DO IT! They're awesome.

The only problem I had with seeing them live is the encore literally went on forever. They played Randy Described Eternity - a song which, on the album, lasts 6 minutes. Live it last half an hour. They really dragged out the instrumental parts and ascended into chaos... Unfortunately, the venue and crowd wasn't big enough for this to have a desired effect, and, by the end, I think we were all ready to go...

Neil's coming and Neil smells worse than me. Seriously. The guy stinks. Often of vomit. I have very nearly vomitted standing next to him. It's not right I tells ya!

Anyway, I have a new show; Guillemots with the CBSO (City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra) on October 11th. I'm coming back from university just to see it because it's the first one, and is currently billed as the only one (I'm sure they'll announce more - at least, after this one). Considering how good they are live, the only thing that could really make them any better is an orchestra. :)

I'm going to try to go to the Calgary Folk Fest next month.  It's a 4-day event, but the big draw for me is Friday July 27th with Hawksley Workman, Neko Case, and the Squirrel Nut Zippers performing on the mainstage.  Saturday/Sunday has numerous "sessions" with multiple artists teaming up on smaller stages.  I hope to see the Squirrel Nut Zippers as much as possible since I became a huge fan after they had broken up.  I never would have imagined they would tour anywhere near here, but thank god for the folk festival organizers!

Art Brut (TOP OF THE POPS!  Troubadour in LA) - 4/21
Folds (UMass) - 5/7
Ben Gibbard (Royce Hall in LA) - 5/17
Arcade Fire (Greek Theater in LA) - 5/30
Folds/mayer (Hollywood Bowl) - 6/9

Don't have any tickets yet, but will definitely see:
Ben Harper/Blonde Redhead  (Sunset Junction Street Fair in LA) - 8/18

Also hoping Rilo Kiley make it this way after the new disc drops in August. . .

If I didn't live on the lame east coast and had the money, thats one concert I'd add to my list.

I'm seeing him in two months at warped tour.....still too long of a wait...

If you've (or anyone) hasnt heard of him before, he's amazing, and just did a cover of a weird al song.     http://la.gg/v/d2bs419.mp3/

I think its $10 or 15, then after the show, he's taking as many people as possible to the midnight showing of Transformers, and you can get those tickets at WOW Hall as well

I got tickets to see Arcade Fire today :)

No, I'm not SEEING them today; that's in October. But this pleases me as it means I no longer have a reason to not like them.

Also, I found out that the support for Bright Eyes next month is Lightspeed Champion. Who is awesome.

Tonight: Roger Waters.
next week: White Stripes
2 weeks: White Stripes x 4

Next month I hope to see Weird Al at the Capital Ex festival.  I also bought a ticket to the Andrew Bird show in Vancouver September 1st with the intention of going, but whether I'm actually in Vancouver by then is another matter altogether.  If all works out, I'll be checking out the New Pornographers at the end of September too.

Midlake, The Dears, The Kissaway Trail and Stephanie Dosen on the 11th July in London. It's their record label's ten year anniversary thing, and we're in town, so I figured we'd go. I really like Midlake and saw Stephanie supporting Duke Special, so hopefully t'will be a good show.

Well, just two days until I see Paul Rodgers for free at The Emerald Theatre in Mt. Clemens, MI. Then, a week from today, I'll be seeing Weird Al for free in Detroit at CityFest!

Here is the unfair part: I had a Demand It! button for Ben Folds on my myspace page for a while, and found out yesterday that 130 people clicked on it. I also found out that Ben and John Mayer are playing at The Palace of Auburn Hills on July 5th. Same night Al is playing CityFest. I love Ben, but I love Al more, plus, $49.50 for a ticket is just a little steep. So, my dream to see Ben in concert this year has been shattered.  :(

GASP! Could it be - you have MORE GIGS THAN ME COMING UP??!

Say it ain't so, Brother Jesus!

What does I have left?

11th July - Midlake, The Dears, The Kissaway Trail and Stephanie Dosen (in London)
12th July - CAKE and Rurrari Joseph (in London)
5th September - Regina Spektor
6th October - Lightspeed Champion
11th October - Guillemots with CBSO
31st October - Arcade Fire

I'm also possibly seeing Rufus, but will have to commute to Sheffield for that (unless I don't go to uni... which ain't gonna happen...)

Uni is actually pretty much responsible for my lack of gigs; I can't exactly book loads until I'm sure I've got in... They better not all sell out...

Really?  Most people I know who saw them (a handful) all say that they are great but the shows are very low energy.  I love them, don't get me wrong.  Just heard the music energy doesn't translate to rockin' atmospheres.

All of those people are horribly wrong. The energy transfers extremely well and I would willingly spend all of my savings for university following the band around the world on the basis of last night's show.

I dunno, I think a Weird Al concert is the best live show. Period. I saw him on July 5th in Detroit, and I'm seeing him again on September 23rd in Jackson, MI. He always gives it his best, and then some. Sure, I had to stand up for the whole show, and was hurting the next day, but I laughed my butt off, danced, and had a great time in Detroit. Didn't get to meet Al, but I did talk to Steve Jay. Cool guy. Yeah, Weird Al rocks!

If you're asking about the NPs, then not really - they're just flying in to do gigs in Berlin, Paris and London in the midst of a big US/Canda tour they're doing. Apparently they don't like the rest of the UK.

Oh, Tippex, I was checking gigs for Nottingham in September/October/November and Okkervil River are playing. I figured I'd probably go and see them. I'm also gonna go see Iron & Wine and Super Furry Animals. I wrote out a list of about 13 bands playing there that I'd like to see, then put little stars next to them based on how much (out of 5) I wanted to see them. SFA and Arcade Fire both got 4 (already have my AF tickets...), Iron & Wine and Lightspeed Champion got 3 each (I already have my Lightspeed ticket...) and then there were a bunch of bands with 1 or 2 stars. Okkervil got 2 and I haven't even heard them yet, haha!
Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???
Post by: Martin on August 02, 2007, 06:48:24 AM
Heh - nice to know my recommendations have some weight. I'm thinking about going to see Okkervil River too, if I can persuade anyone to go with me. Ditto for Voxtrot, who are doing some gigs soon.

And you'll be pleased to know I'm currently listening to the Old Cermony, having listened to the recommendations on this board.

I might go and see Fionn Regan in Nottingham... The 13 gigs I've thought of.

Definite:
- Lightspeed Champion: I love this guy; he supported Bright Eyes and used to be in Test Icicles. He's really cool and he has a blog that he updates with demos and covers and stuff. He's pretty fun and writes back to fans.
- Arcade Fire: Missed them in March, which soured me against them, but I've put it behind me now.
- Super Furry Animals: Recommended by Kliph of The Flaming Lips. I have all their albums and saw Gruff solo in March...
- Iron & Wine: Loads of people I know like 'im and I have one album. Worth seeing, I reckons...
- Okkervil River: See my other posts about them.

Not certain:
- Feist: Not listened to much of her stuff. Lots of people have recommended her to me, though. Missed her in Birmingham...
- Youthmovies Soundtrack Systems: Supported Built To Spill in London a few days after I saw them. Don't know much about them, but they seem alright. I've heard they suck live, though, so I'm not sure...
- The Maccabees: Most Ben fans don't like them (they were a crummy UK tour support in late '05) but I've followed them at a distance for awhile. Not really sure whether I can be arsed to see them, though.
- The Broken Family Band: I heard one song by them on the radio once and liked it.
- Fionn Regan: Lots of people have recommended Fionn Regan to me. Today I purchased an album. I'll see how it is...
- The Kissaway Trail: I think they're from Denmark... Saw them recently with Midlake in London. I quite enjoyed them. A bit Arcade Fire-ish, but also a bit Flaming Lips-y.
- King Creosote: The support is Ruarri Joseph.
- Gorilla Biscuits: I like the lead singer's other music, not heard anything by Gorilla Biscuits. I hear they're hardcore. I won't go to this probably.

Also, I'd *consider* seeing The White Stripes, but they're huge.

I might see Rufus in Sheffield.

P.S: 23rd September is the day I go to uni, and also the day Feist plays.

Btw, I'm wearing my Renaissance Fair outift to the show, in honor of the line in White and Nerdy "Spend every weekend at the Renaissance Fair".  :D I'm also bringing food with me. Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???
Post by: Allison on August 02, 2007, 02:06:03 PM
Well I saw the tail end of Al's show at Summerfest. Basically all the major hits. Walked in during Amish Paradise, into White and Nerdy and then Fat, and then he came back out again for Albuquerque. But that was the first time I saw him live, and it was only, clearly for a few minutes, because John Mayer's audience was taking so long where I worked on the grounds. Sigh.

Ah, ok. So you didn't see the concert only song. I'll just say, it's freaking hilarious! I'm just jealous because you get to see him sooner than I do. *Yeah, I saw him in Detroit, but I had to stand the whole time.* Man, did I ache the next day! This concert coming up for me is indoors, plus, I get to sit. Yay!

Gas is rather expensive here. When I picked the car up, it had half a tank, which is why I was so pissed off about my sister's boyfriend and his idiot friend (who I was told to take with me for company/directions) taking everything so leisurely and finding it to be so very amusing that their incorrect directions did not help. I ended up using up almost a quarter of the tank, which was hugely frustrating, as that was a "free" half tank of gas, which could've lasted for awhile for all I use the car...

Filling up completely can cost around £40...

i've seen them live.
they're not terrible for what they are.

they were playing at Voodoo Fest last year.  i had to endure their set in order to stake a good spot for the next gig (The Flaming Lips).

Alex gave me a very good idea this morning, and it might just work.
The Flaming Lips are playing in Portland on September 19th. Built to Spill are playing Portland September 20th and 21st. Guster are playing Portland for September 23rd.
My brother's friend has family in Portland that we could stay with. This just might happen for me. But of course I'd only see BTS once, for money issues.
I definitely have my fingers crossed.

And, don't you dare, mel, get your own curse. That'd be bad.

Post by: melissa on August 15, 2007, 10:47:19 AM
i don't want a curse.  i want my Kweller!
we will be getting there late.  my roommate's boyfriend doesn't get off of work until 6.  ... that's when the doors are supposed to open.  and the venue is an hour away.
:'( major tear.  i'll probably have to push my way to the front since i'm only 5 feet tall and it's a tiny venue.

Or. You drive yourself. And save them spots? yes?
Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???
Post by: melissa on August 15, 2007, 10:32:06 PM
definitely not.
that's an extra 15 in gas and an extra 10 in parking.
i like to save my money.

we got there right as the opener, Tim Fite, came on.  he was... interesting.
i got a decent enough spot, so it wasn't too shabby.
Kweller, of course, was fantastic.

btw, i realized that it's definitely the summer of brown tour shirts.
before this summer, i had zero brown shirts.  now, i have 3.  (ben folds, ben kweller, and polyphonic spree)

You got a brown Polyphonic shirt? I didn't see a brown one when we were there.....

But you're right. Lots of Brown. Sounds like our clothing is going to start matching.....

And hooray Alex. It creeps me out how different your system is from ours sometimes. I couldn't imagine waiting that long to find out if I was going to the school of my choice. However. Probably help stop slacking in the final semester of your senior year...... hum.

yeah, my polyphonic spree shirt is the same color brown as the Ben one.  it says The Polyphonic Spree on the front and has a list of all the tour dates on the back.  it's pretty nifty.  doesn't fit though...  damn people need to start carrying child sized t-shirts.

They definitely didn't have that one when I saw them. I have a gray one. With some Fragile Army scribble things. I love the fabric of it though. So soft and wondrous.

I'll have to let you know if Oh No! Oh My!/Au Revoir Simone have a brown shirt.

i just added Rilo Kiley the day before my 21st birthday, October 4.
i also added Architecture in Helsinki for November 15.
yays!

good god, i'm going to be broke.
Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???
Post by: DrAlexHaleIII on September 15, 2007, 08:35:20 AM
Left to see:
- Lightspeed Champion (with Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man)
- Guillemots with CBSO
- The Decemberists (with Land Of Talk)
- Fionn Regan (with Babel)
- Arcade Fire (with Clinic)
- Iron & Wine
- Okkervil River
- Patrick Wolf

I'm also giving big consideration to seeing Two Gallants... They're playing the day before my birthday (Okkervil River are the day after). Also, Wilco, who are playing 2 days before my birthday (Iron & Wine are 3 days before). However, Wilco are expensive and in Birmingham, so, even though I'd rather see them then some of the bands I'm already seeing, I'm not sure I can...

Too bad he's opening for Mandy Moore.
Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???
Post by: DrAlexHaleIII on September 15, 2007, 11:22:05 AM
Pfft... Only counts if you see them all when they're headlining. In fact, if you see one of them supporting, it resets the overall total. ESPECIALLY if they're supporting Mandy Moore.
Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???
Post by: Allison on September 15, 2007, 12:40:43 PM
Well I see no problem with seeing Kweller and Folds again, as they're both promising new albums being recorded still in 07. It's getting silly Ben Lee to tour on his own over here. No one has any idea who the hell he is..... right now.

Unless American Television really takes off. I kind of hope not, I mean, it'd be good for him, but I don't want him to be the next Fray. No thank you. (though, if my school booked him that'd be great!)
Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???

I don't see why everyone is hatin on Mandy Moore. If you listen to her new cd, you'll find that she ain't too bad now. Plus, The Weepies co-wrote most of the songs with her. I think that pretty much rocks.
Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???
Post by: Allison on September 16, 2007, 09:42:25 PM
I really have little to say about Miss Moore. However. It's like Folds and Mayer all over again. I'd much, much rather see Mr. Lee on his own.

I'm seeing Andrew Bird, for the first time!, on Saturday! Wooooo!

Rufus Wainwright tonight!

And, Martin, if the DS show you mean is one of those "special" shows, then hell yes! I'd love to go to one of those and if we weren't living further away from London (and paying a lot of money to do so!) you know me and Alice would be right there! Sadly, at the minute, the only artists who could drive us so far south would be Eels and The Dresden Dolls. And The Old Ceremony, but that's a given.

Yeah, but Chloe, you had Built to Spill recently. You even had the Mayer tour. Mel was left out on both. Well. She had the Mayer tour. But it was Ben Folds-less.

And that's worse that just a Mayer tour.
Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???
Post by: general_apathy (Chloe) on October 31, 2007, 01:39:38 PM
That's true. But I did have to go all the way to Washington for the Mayer show, and only went to see Ben, who wasn't really THAT great. I mean, not worth the $60 ticket and drive...so maybe it's better she didn't get him.

But BTS...man, that was an awesome show.
Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???
Post by: melissa on October 31, 2007, 02:22:47 PM
i would've had to drive 4 hours to see Mayer/Folds.  gas money was too high... as was the ticket.  ... and i despise texas.  anybody else think that texans are mean?

anyway, i'm gradually getting better shows down here.  rilo kiley, smashing pumpkins, mute math, motion city soundtrack, architecture in helsinki, ben lee, ben kweller, (and now i just have to convince folds to follow suit).
Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???

Ummm....no Mayer tour, no BTS and no Ben since August 06.  Instead we get tortured with Justin Timberlake next week.

Mel, I'm SO jealous of you seeing the Weakerthans!!! They're becoming one of my favorite bands of all time. It's pure poetry.

Anywho, hopefully Mountain Goats later this month...FOR FREE. I love working at a radio station. I hit the jackpot bitches.

And hopefully Colin Meloy in P-Town. That's awhile away though, so we'll see.

April 25th is ANZAC Day.  You should be spending it watching a VERY young Mel Gibson in 'Gallipoli' on DVD and eating Lamingtons and ANZAC biscuits.

don't get too excited, chloe.  i saw them about a year ago and they were boring as hell.  seriously, i leaned on a post and fell asleep for a couple minutes.
they play their music well.  sounds exactly like the cd, but they have no stage presence/energy.

Awesome!
Oh, and if you're wondering how Mountain Goats went. AMAZING. I had an awesome time. Short, but sweet set. The split-billed Jeffrey Lewis was also a nice surprise that I took a liking to. I'm gonna have to get some of his stuff.

Also, might have Joshua Radin and Ingrid Michaelson in on Monday here at the station. It's a big if, but if we do get them, I will be the interviewer. So, that's pretty cool. Wish I could go to their show, but it's 21+.

I'm going Saturday night too!  How did the rehearsal sound?  And what the hell are you doing wearing a 3/4 sleeve shirt on a 41 degree day??(That's 41c, not 41f, my intercontinental friends.  We are talking hot, even for locals.)

So, I'll see you there, yes? Just you, me and 5000 others...

I'm English....I still get convinced it's going to get cold when the sun goes down.  :) Although I wasn't hot at all, so it was all good.

The rehearsal was great. Ben was really funny and gracious, which I thought was cool considering he was moreorless doing a 'free' concert. It sounded amazing, and actually they rarely stopped to check/redo stuff.
I cant wait until Saturday.

Not nearly as news-worthy as the BF update but...

Ben Lee was a very enjoyable experience.  Certainly Ben himself was enjoying it (he told us about 1000 times).  I did have a chuckle when Mandy Moore came out in sky-scraper stilettos for her acoustic set but traded them in for flat ones when she came out for her duet with Ben.

It was a top notch show but I thought perhaps I had been tainted seeing BF in the same setting (and being a mega-fan) and therefore not getting maximum BL enjoyment.  But then someone agreed with me:

http://www.australianstage.com.au/reviews/perth/ben-lee-with-waso-1189.html

And just for good measure (in case anyone's interested), here's another review.

http://www.waso.com.au/default.aspx?MenuID=81

Note that Folds cracks a mention in both.  Nice work for a man who HASN'T BEEN HERE SINCE AUGUST 2006!  ARE YOU LISTENING BEN??
Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???
Post by: Allison on March 11, 2008, 06:49:21 PM
SO. My April would like this if I had the money. And it's all in my area-ish. If Madison-Milwaukee-Chicago is my area (excluding Folds, cause he's got a bigger range for me to drive, and more partners in crime to get to the shows to keep the cost down)
(Note: I'm on break this week)
April 17: Folds
April 18: Stars
April 19: Folds
April 20: Folds
April 21: Okkervil River/New Pornographers
April 22: Iron & Wine
April 23: Colin Meloy
April 25: Cloud Cult

Unfortunately. I do not have that kind of budget.  Ben and Cloud Cult are already purchased. and I'm thinking OR/NP might end up being my only other show. I need to buy that ticket...... I'd love to see Iron and Wine, and Colin and Stars- but it's affording it/the gas. Stars is more expensive then Ben. Silly Canadians.

I am officially also seeing Eels on April 6. Sidenote.  I have the ability (maybe) to see Blitzen Trapper on April 10th- but...... it's that same problem again. And that show is actually here in Iowa. (And I am too)

Eels again next Sunday with my Alice. Yay :)

My sisters are both coming along to the Folds shows in Minnesota. I'm really excited about that. Both of my sisters are younger than me (18, well 19 by then and 16) and my 16 year old sister went with me to a show ages ago. My second show. So yeah, ages ago.  But the other one never has. She's really looking forward to it. I think it makes these shows even better. My siblings and I get along really well, that's cause they knew I'd be famous on the interents before I did. :P

Eels tonight!

Then:
- Eugene McGuinness in the week (this is a possible one; we haven't booked tickets and need to look at trains and stuff).
- Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly next month (mostly because I haven't been to a gig with dad in ages!)
- Ted Leo with Alice in Nottingham
- Guillemots in Wolverhampton
- Guillemots in Coventry
- Guillemots in Nottingham
- Why? in Nottingham

Possibly Iron & Wine or Man Man (same day, different cities), Silver Jews and Stephen Malkmus. Probably not though.

We're also hoping to head to End of the Road this year. Sun Kil Moon and Mercury Rev! Yay!

I am kinda tempted by it actually (although less tempted now I know tMG are playing other places, so I'll more than likely get to see them in London).

I'm not so sure about the hurting with sticks, though. I might have to fashion some sort of body armour if I go.

We'll see...
Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???
Post by: Allison on April 06, 2008, 03:11:23 AM
Hurting with sticks is not very descirptive. it could mean so many things. and i am oddly reminded of a scene in harry potter (that they of course cut from the film) with the weasley twins when they're all signing up for dumbledore's army..... any one?? "we don't care where we stick it, really..."

yes? no?

oh. i probably won't actually make it to oh, just about all my other shows in april. i'll see ben the schedlued three times, and the two cloud cult shows. but i don't know if okkervil river/new pornographers'll happen, and i'm pretty 100% sure colin meloy and iron and wine won't happen. stars was a pipe dream in the first place. i'm poor right now. yeah pay day is between now and then, but, probably much too late. if i attend any of these gigs it'll be a day of show purchase. it's lame, but i graduate in a couple weeks, and i gotta start lookin out for the moneys. i gotta start you know, living on my own, financially. sigh.

The "Live with strings" DVD/album is probably my least favourite recording of Eels live. It's good and all, but I don't think it really does the live show justice in the ways the other live albums do. Check out "Oh, what a beautiful morning" or "Electro-shock Blues show". The new one is pretty good, too, though 20 minutes of "Not Ready Yet" is too much. "Sixteen Tons" is great, but it's a radio session (does feature the gentle version of "Last Stop" that they're playing on this tour, though).

Beck has announced a couple of UK dates in July. Manchester may be two hours away, but it's facking Beck, man. Should be going to that unless something terrible happens.

Other gigs which I may or may not be going to:

- White Rabbits (not heard them, but a couple of my friends are in the band that's supporting and have gotten me guestlist)
- Johnny Flynn
- Rogue Wave
- Johnny Flynn (again, maybe)
- Guillemots x 3
- Why?
- The National
- My Morning Jacket
- Ben
- Beck

May not make it to all of them, but Guillemots, Ben and Beck are all certs (Beck isn't really, though, as I have to find out if I can go and book it first...). Should also definitely be seeing Johnny Flynn and Why? but both need booking.

Until you find the tribe has spoken or you've been eliminated from the race or big brother says it's time to go.  Or Chloe decides she's just plain had it with you lot.

Then you return to regular society to find you have ex-wives and children, boxes of photographs...

Also, saw Bon Iver last night and he/they were amazing.

Ahem! I think you'll find that that's more up to the band and their financial ability to do so! We've been trying to figure something out for awhile, but as the band numbers around 5 members in its most basic form (which it never plays in anymore...) it's proving pretty difficult to find a way to justify the price of the endeavour, other than to cater for the small UK fanbase the band has. We're working on it, though).

As for me, finances aren't ideal at the moment as my car had its MOT the other day and £300 worth of repairs have been (ahem) "recommended". My parents being my parents, they've taken this to mean the repairs are 100% necessary and are insisting on me financing these (very much unbudgeted for) alterations. As I barely have enough to fund the yearly service/insurance renewal, this means that I will be working very hard over the summer to deal with this burden and probably won't be able to fund many more gigs. I have Guillemots twice in June (they've gotten so ridiculously good live now that it's hardly bearable), Why?, Ben, Beck and End of the Road to come, and hopefully I'll make a bit more cash in the summer to fund more (though I think the gigs I do have so far are a more than adequate starting point)...

Yeah, it was just central Europe for some reason - obviously she doesn't like us in the UK. I'm sure she'll be back once she's done her new album (She said she was starting work on it earlier this year so I'm hoping to hear something more on it soon).

I'm in a predicament.

I HAVE to be up here in the Milwaukee area for a training I help run on July 12th's morning/early afternoon.

Which means. I have to pick between Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin and Jenny Owen Youngs. Cause I am not driving down to Chicago twice in 24 hours, not with 4.00+ gas.

Other than that, Amanda Palmer's announced, well, ticketmaster really, announced two solo shows in early August. ONE of which is in Chicago. So you'd better believe I'm going to be there on August 8th. :)
Title: Re: Who are you seeing this year???
Post by: Martin on June 03, 2008, 09:58:55 AM
I'd go for Jenny, but that's just me. Probably depends on who you like more and who's more likely to come back to your area in the near future.

Also, I booked tickets to see Shearwater in July, which should be good. And to see Ben again in November (goes without saying, really).

Me too. I mean, I'm sure SSLYBY will be around again, they're a bigger name. But. Leaving here at 4 pm to make it to Chicago for a Saturday night show might be near impossible.

And that worries me.

I'll have to do some soul searching. Though. It may end up I end up at neither because of the fact that training is 9 AM to 4 PM. WHY do I have to be in charge?

I am extremely excited about all 3 of these gigs. Now I just need to find someone to go with me.

As it was a music festival they were un-stalk-able. Though several of them, but not Tim, were roaming the grounds earlier in the day. They currently are in label debates, so the fact that they've got any shows is pretty huge.

Oh and Ben, obviously at Shepherd's Bush. I decided not to get Counting Crows tickets to Wembley since it's absolutely miles and miles away from South London and would be a disaster area getting home. But I feel bad thinking about it. I won't anymore. La la la!

September 3: Ben Folds + Nashville Symphony
September 13: Kevin Devine
October 3: Ben Folds + Fort Wayne Symphony
October 9: Ben Folds
October 10: Ben Folds

I have nothing booked past that, though there are a couple I am thinking about, but I need my work schedule first.

Mel- on Oct 12 while you're still here, and we were hoping for another Folds show (which seems like no, he'll be with the kiddies), both Fleet Foxes and Pinback are in town.

I really envy those of you who can afford to see so many concerts. I kind of can't do that, for more than just financial reasons.

I have yet to see Ben in concert. I really, really want to see him on October 9th at the State Theater in Detroit. I just gotta find someone else who'd like to take me, as I don't drive. So that's one hopeful.

you will not regret it at all. I saw Built to Spill last summer and it was great. the only bad thing about it is that there weren't any front fills for the sound, so a lot of doug's vocals got dropped where I was. Too close. Whoops.

Tru dat. Apparently this is one of the shows where they're performing all of Perfect From Now On so that excites me! And this venue has better sound than the one they played at last time. I don't really remember much of the last show...I think I was a little "out of it" if you catch my drift ;)

They're doing that here, but the only place I could *realistically* get to is Leeds (well, I could manage Oxford because of Alice, but it's a weeknight) and I'm still not so big on PFNO. Now, if they were performing all of "There's Nothing Wrong With Love", I would travel any distance to see that show.

So, today was a bad day for gigs. I found out that the Hold Steady UK tour has been cancelled, AND I got an email saying the White Hinterland gig I was going to has been cancelled.

Henceforth September 29th shall be known as "Cancellation day".

Although, looking on the bright side, White Hinterland being cancelled might mean I can go and see Jenny Lewis that night instead, so it's not all bad.

Well, I almost bought my Ben Folds ticket for October 9th today, except I need to put more money into my checking in order to do it. Wasn't expecting the "convenience fee" to be so high. Shoulda looked at the site before going to the bank. I will say, I got my piano cookie cutter today. Looks pretty cool! I really am gonna make Ben a piano cookie, and hopefully give it to him after the show. I will let you know when I finally do get my ticket.

Here is how someone else decorated the piano cookie. Mine will be brown, because I use chocolate on all my cookies:

I am a winner. I even made it to Kevin Devine, despite being a really short show it was realllly great. I saw him totally solo, and despite the audience being, who is this guy??? they all seemed to be pretty enraptured.... That man's got some vocal power.

Oh, and Miss Jenny Owen Youngs just booked a November date at good ol' Schuba's. (I think I need to move to Chicago)

11/4 - ObamaRama in Chicago? Is that a gig? I'm hoping it's a OMGIZURPRZDENTSPEECH
11/16 - Cloud Cult (if I get off of work early enough to get there)
11/18 or 11/19 - Jenny Owen Youngs (I work on the 18th, but it's actually IN milwaukee, so it'd save gas, if, once again, I get off of work early enough.... and she doesn't keep cancelling shows)
12/3 - Amanda Palmer
12/31 - CAKE

Nothing yet planned for 09, but at least I have ONE show in November. Why is November so dry? And why is Amanda coming in the f*cking cold.... and she pulls in crazy lines too. Though, the Metro's tinnnnnnnyyyyy. Why the eff is she playing there when as the Dolls they sold out The Vic? Color me confused.

I have Decemberists this week, and Amanda Palmer at the end of November. What should I be prepared for with that?

Here's my DEFINITE lineup:

Jan 24 - The Eagles - Birmingham, AL (don't judge me, my parents love them and I'm joining them!)

Jan 29 - Joshua Radin - Birmingham
Feb 7 - Andrew Bird - New Orleans
Feb 22 - Ben Folds - Knoxville

I also might make a Phish appearance with one of my obsessed friends in Asheville in June, if we get tickets

Andrew Bird the last two nights was INNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNf*ckINGCCCCCCCCREEEDIBLE.

The first night he was backed by Dosh all night long. Opposite Day > Nervous Tic and as a far more rock song? BLEW. MY. MIND.

Then last night he was solo, outside of a few songs that St Vincent backed him on. and played masterfade!! yay. my first introduction to andrew bird was when MPoE came out (thanks .org!) and my first three favorite songs were opposite day, masterfade and nervous tic, so it was super awesome to hear all three in about a 24 hour span.

He played a few songs both nights, Effigy and Tenousness, and hearing them in two completely different styles was just. <3's. Last time I saw Andrew, this past April i was not so impressed. Not sure why (maybe it was hometown crowd jitters? or the fact he'd broken his violin the night before?).... this two night engagment was filmed for a dvd and I cannot wait to relive it. andrew and annie clark (of st vincent) covered dylan's oh, sister the second night, definitely a highlight.

Maybe I shouldn't tell you this.... but.....
I've seen him play it twice. My first show all the way back in 07, and then this past Saturday, my fifth show.

It's his mom's favorite song, the first time i saw him he told us he was only playing it cause she was there. and as he's an IL person, perhaps mom was in MKE on Saturday? I would imagine his parents were at both shows, actually.

High on Fire and Converge were there too, but man I thought they were bad.

2010 is only set to start March 6th with The Avett Brothers (WHO I AM f*ckING EXCITED BEYOND BELIEF FOR) in Milwaukee for my birthday. HOORAY!

Though, dunno how I'm going to handle three whole months with not a single show. Hopefully something will be announced here in the Chicago land area that is up my alley!

YES.
Just bought some tickets for Brian Fallon (lead singer for The Gaslight Anthem) who's playing a solo acoustic show.
So, so excited for that.
I just randomly checked up on their myspace, and I saw they had a show in LA, so I clicked it and it said the tickets went on sale today. How lucky can a person get?
