Title: TESTERS WANTED: New tour page
Post by: Andy on January 16, 2007, 03:21:39 AM
Hi dudes,

An idea I've been thinking about for a while, and finally got round to putting together - and I want you to give it a test!

There's a new cut-down tour page here:
http://www.thesuburbs.org.uk/tour/

As you can see, it just has upcoming shows at the mo (previous dates coming soon). If you are logged in, you have the opportunity to mark yourself as an attendee!

It's pretty basic, but I thought I'd get you playing with it before I went on to make enhancements.

Let me know what you think! Cheers!

As ever, Andy, it looks good and seems to work just fine.  Great idea.

Updates to the news page and improvements to the boards?  All in the space of a couple of days?  Someone has finished their internet de-tox and is firmly on the re-tox waggon!  ;D ;)

Good work pal.

J...

Very cool - inspired by Last.fm's cunning new events calendar by any chance?

I don't use last.fm, so no! But I may pop along to see what they're doing with it...

My main idea was people could log all the shows they've been to (coming soon!), and also upcoming shows so 'burbians could meet up. Of course, it's all written for you guys, so any additional ideas/functions are most welcome!

Thanks for the feedback so far!

Must be just a case of great minds thinking alike.

The Last.fm thing is very good for finding out when artists are playing as it matches up the music that you've been listening to with upcoming gigs - it's how I found out about Ben's latest tour.

Just an idea - when the shows have happened (and if you add old shows) it would be nice if users could enter the setlist for the show so that people could look back and see what songs Ben played at each gig. (Especially good for me as I'm rubbish at remembering setlists.)

I tried to find the ladt.fm one today, but I think you must have to be a member cause I couldn't find it! Ah well, from the sounds of it it's tailored for a different purpose, so there's probably not much to steal ;)

Thanks for the idea! You'l be pleased to hear it's part of the grand plan, my friend! Of course, that means we're all relying on those attending to note the setlists down! I recommend either taking a scrap of paper, or using the 'drafts' facility of your mobile phone's text messaging. Only jot them down every three songs or so - cause otherwise you'll miss out on valuable Ben experience! :D

up until about last spring, I memorized setlists and then wrote them as soon as I got home.  surprisingly, they were usually complete save for a couple songs; though Ben's Nov '05 Boston set that I posted here was all from memory and all there.

after I realized that people write them down, I realized how crazy memorizing 1.5-2.5 hour setlists was.  I seriously didn't once think I could just write it down.  "I'm S-M-R-T, I mean S-M-A-R-T."

I promise to do my best for May's Amherst show, and I will surely post it up once Andy's fine tinkering is done!  (unless somebody beats me to it.)

DUH. That way you can get your set list autographed after you wait around. Jared said to me in November "How do you always end up with these?" Like they were the real ones or something, the real set list from the stage isn't ever correct. Well, sometimes, but rarely.

Or take a recording device and tape the gig, listen back, write down the setlist and then delete it. Obviously don't distribute it or anything though, that would be wrong.

Alternatively just memorize the solo section in the middle as he'll do all the other same songs in the same order all through the rest of the tour anyways.

theSuburbs fully endorses (a variation of) the above method.

Is the variation the one where we do distribute it, only we also charge money?

OK, second stage. We have NEW FEATURES that I'd like y'all to test out.

You can see that past shows (just the UK ones for now) are now clickable, that'll take you to their setlist, and related vids/reviews/comments.

Why not go and post some? You can get youtube video IDs from the particular video URL (it's the assortment of letters/numbers/etc after the 'v=').

Let me know what you think!

Very nice Andy - I see you've been working hard (despite what ChudleyCannons thinks). I went back and found a short review I wrote at the time and added it to the Hammersmith gig listing.

Are you going to get people to upload/post links to mp3s from the gig as well as videos, btw?
Title: Re: TESTERS WANTED: New tour page
Post by: Andy on March 12, 2007, 02:07:37 AM
Thanks for that! First review, eh? You can forever claim that.

I'm still looking at ways to link recordings to gigs, as most are torrents that are not available forever (and even shows hoted on sites get taken down after a while for space/bandwidth reasons).

Thanks for the comments!

Duh, I'm too lazy to find those things.

Plus I'm leaving tomorrow morning. For five days. I have packing and shit to do.

I'm gonna go spend time in 90 degree weather in Phoenix, AZ. And probably wont have the internets while there. So cause havoc without me.

hey, Andy.  you might want to add July 3 to the tour page.

"Tickets to go see John Mayer at Milwaukee's Summerfest go on sale next Saturday, March 24. He'll be performing at the Marcus Amphitheater on July 3. Ben Folds and Brett Dennen will open the show." - TMJ Milwaukee 4 News reports

Any thoughts of going backwards on this idea for previous years?

There's some info way back in the back of this board and maybe Greyseal still has the info even if she no longer has her site.

But of course! I've been busy inputting old setlist data. I've got all of Grey's old lists (she sent them over a while back) and I've trawled the boards for info.

When I feel like I've got a good amount in I'll make it live and open up all the past gigs.

Pictures or a list of Merch avaliable from the diffrent tours? and also going backwards listing pervious dates like said above would be cool

Merch! That's a new idea.

I was going to put info together about each tour (hence the request for help finding tour posters thread), but I hadn't thought about the merch. Have we got enough back-info on it, you think?

There are shirts and stuff from several tours.... that people either have or are on ebay.
Title: Re: TESTERS WANTED: New tour page
Post by: sek53 on April 03, 2007, 02:22:27 PM
Hey no prob for finding the videos and being on top of that

Yeah ebay would be the best bet, and just posting a new topic when the time comes to launch the new addition.  Also Tour shirts are another great way to get old tour dates, especally since I know time to time, certain shows weren't listed online, on the offical site at least, just because they were "private" shows. I remember Pittsburgh being one of those from the spring tour last year along with another school show.

I think Andy is the only one who can, since when its posted, each song on the set list is linked to the lyrics and/or song info (such as original performer/writer)

We miss you! At least, the ones that were here when you were do. A lotta new blood sincle the old days dear. You're all growing up and getting married and such.

As for me, I'm never leaving Silver Street.

But thanks for the kind words. I'm going to extend it to the old stuff soon, and any extra ideas are most welcome. I'm also looking at integrating it with flickr, so you can just submit a link to a photoset and it'll pull over the pics.
