Did anybody ask about the future of the five?
« on: November 22, 2016, 01:19:34 PM »
To all those who ponied up for the preshow experiences.. I've read all of the reviews and surprisingly no mention  of anyone asking about the future of the five. Just making sure I didn't miss anything, I would love to know where things currently stand with that. Seems to be a revolving attitude.

They said something in the past about it being open when the timing works out for everyone. Darren released a record as Hotel Lights in April, and is touring with another indie rock band currently. Folds has eluded to more work with yMusic, so who knows?! There's also apparently a whole next record "ready" that has Ryan and Sam on it, that they recorded pre-So There (and Phone in a Pool was stolen off of).

soooooooo, your guess is as good as mine.

actually I asked sam about that record and from what he said that record is a long time from being released. however important note: sam also said that, in his opinion, it will have the best song Ben has written on it sooooo..... worth the wait? He said they mostly recorded ideas and that they only had 4 songs and one of them was stolen and put on so there. aka phone in a pool

Thats a solid scoop, thanks for sharing! I'll add that considering he played "only one rock show this year (2016)" [i was there, one off indian casino gig in palm springs w sammy and ryman featuring a setlist plucked straight outta 2005) im really hoping that the break has worked and hes feeling the itch to focus back on rockin as the current tour winds to a close in the spring

*setlist for reference:

effington
sentimental guy
annie waits
improv 1
still fighting it
jesusland
gone
underground
zak and sara
improv 2

That is super interesting. Hope we hear it sometime soon. Would love to see the Five get together again at some point. I really liked SotLotM, but I ain't gonna hold my breath.

This is semi-related, but Ben does a little play-by-play of the Whatever and Ever Amen album on people magazine's website.  http://people.com/music/ben-folds-five-whatever-and-ever-amen-20th-anniversary-track-commentary/

Would be kind of neat if they did a show and played that album all the way through.

I'm not sure there's any ground breaking stuff in there about how the songs came about, but I wasn't aware that "Fair" basically came from a newspaper story, like cigarette did.

update on that Ireland record! asked Ben about it at an AMAA before his show in Milwaukee his paraphrased answer was, "We ordered too much jameson and couldn't really focus so it's not really a record and idk if i'll ever do anything with it"

I'm confused on the "Ireland record." Was this recorded with the Five? I've read the posts but I don't see it.

No, it was recorded at the same time/well about/ as So There. We were discussing it because it was thought as a record that could/would postpone the Five doing anything more together.

Thanks Allison! I remembered the "fake" tracks from WTN being recorded in Ireland but I couldn't remember anything else. Yes, I would gladly welcome another "Five" album. I do remember Ben kind of saying he'd like the Five to be something like Neil Young and Crazy Horse; that he could go back to it from time to time.

Isn't this basically how that fake leak album of Way To Normal came to be?

Least he could do with it is leak it if he's not planning on using it. I can't believe So There has been out for a year and a half already
