Tour Board / Re: Did anybody ask about the future of the five?
« on: March 15, 2017, 12:16:35 PM »
Thanks Allison! I remembered the "fake" tracks from WTN being recorded in Ireland but I couldn't remember anything else. Yes, I would gladly welcome another "Five" album. I do remember Ben kind of saying he'd like the Five to be something like Neil Young and Crazy Horse; that he could go back to it from time to time.

I'm confused on the "Ireland record." Was this recorded with the Five? I've read the posts but I don't see it.

The self-titled BFF vinyl now appears to be out of print and the prices online are now reflecting the availability. I did pick up a copy but haven't opened it yet--partially based on some not so great sounds reviews I've read about but felt like I needed to get it for "the collection."

I've picked up So There and Sound of the Life on vinyl recently and they both sound great. I did see the self titled album in a store but passed because of some not so good reviews on the sound quality. I'd like to get RTS on vinyl but I have to say they've priced me out with $35 and $40 for an album on vinyl. Pretty crazy prices......but not as crazy as Phish on vinyl.

Thanks for the follow up on the "S/T." I agree. I do get the fact it was not recorded on the best audio set up possible but I agree the music is awesome. I know Ben loves the album--flaws included. It sounds like (no pun intended) this should be lower on my list as far as getting all the albums on vinyl with a limited budget. It's on the list but there's a few ahead of it.

Thanks for the comments. I a bit slow-- but what does "S/T" stand for? I know I should know but I don't!

After years of being on the fence I'm finally getting "back" into vinyl. Any thoughts on which albums sound better on vinyl? I see Messner is going to be rereleased on vinyl in December. If anyone's got an extra yellow Suburbs vinyl they're willing to sell please let me know! Best, Mike

Great show by Ben last night and a good crowd to match. Second time seeing Ben with a Symphony-first time was with Boston Pops back in 2008. Pretty much the same setlist as then but there were a few changes (no Belinda which wasn't released at the time of the show but I still remember the disgusted looks on one of the Pops players when he sang about big breasts:). Rock This Bitch had a very elaborate setup in which Ben spent probably about 10 minutes getting different parts of the Orchestra to play different parts--that was pretty cool and unique. You could tell from the faces of some of the players they enjoyed the spontaneity. The 3rd movement of the concerto was played and I have to say it sounded pretty good. It had a bit of Rhapsody in Blue in there to my ears. Ben did say it would be on an album coming out next year. The setlist was something like this (I know it is not 100% percent accurate): Effingham, Smoke, Jesusland, Picture Window, 3rd movement of the concerto, Fred Jones Part 2, Steve's Last Night in Town, Landed intermission, Zack and Sara, Cologne, Annie Waits, Rock This Bitch, The Luckiest, Brick, OAD (orchestra leaves) Army and Rockin' The Suburbs. We got the stories about Cologne, Steven and history of RTB. Ben talked about the parts of a concerto and about "shooting you whole load" on parts of it--pretty funny stuff. He also talked about the difficultly of playing concertos with "rock" band aids on his fingers and how wearing a tie is tough to try to play muted notes. I'll probably think of something else later but I've got to run for now!!! Cheers!

Perhaps another "55 from the vault" deal where others songs could be downloaded. I know the quality may not be as good but we're talking live versions here so I'm not as picky.

Randy--try this website. They may be more out there?? I don't know if some are from the Scranton show but some of the unreleased live tracks that ended up on the Retrospective (studio versions) are on the website.

Tour Board / Re: 9/16 Cary, NC show
« on: September 18, 2012, 05:34:53 AM »
I had a great time a the Cary show. I thought the band was in great shape! 2nd row seats to the left of the stage so I could check out all of Ben's playing. I saw the 5 a few times in the '90's and the reunuion show in '08. It is hard to compare shows with the reunion show but I would say this show  was easily up there with the best. Frankly, I was a bit surprised after this long off they could pull together and be this tight. Darren watched Ben like a hawk. It is obvious these guys know each other musically well and can follow the others lead. When Ben had to "relieve" himself Sledge broke into a nice solo (with Darren joining in).

A highlight for me was "Erase Me" which I thought they killed it live. For the most part the crowd didn't know the new songs and tended to be a bit laid back on those. Other little side notes were- SFTD let into a little version of Purple Haze. Ben introduced Sledge ("a permanent resident of Chapel Hill"--which is right next to Cary) about half a dozen times. Clearly excited to be on stage with these guys again. I know there has been some discussion about prices and the length of some of the shows. I got burned a bit because I bought a pair presale tickets which ended up being further back. The day of the regular sale I got 2nd row. I couldn't sell the first pair!!! I got back about 1/2 of one ticket and had to eat the other. I listed them on craigslist and never got a hit!! So I ended up paying just over $100 for my ticket but you know what ---it was worth every dime. Although it will be a while I hope I get to catch another "reunited" show!! Photos to come later today. Cheers, Mike

Terp2 thanks for the excellent review. Sounds like a great show! I excited for tomorrow nights show. I've got a similar background--saw the 5 a few times in the 90's, more solo shows that I can could and made the 2008 reunion gig. I'm about 3 hours from Chapel Hill. I'll give a report on Monday---I'm sure I'll be too beat by the time I get home tomorrow night. Mike
