Ben Folds and a piano…Ask Me Anything VIP experience at the Knitting Factory in Spokane Washington October 29,2016.

Wife and I agree it was worth the money.

Brief summary follows…apologies for the grammar & syntax errors in advance…& I’m heavily paraphrasing.

Waited for a spell at around 5pm in the Kitting Factory with a very pleasant bouncer named Ed who would have shown us his camera video of him (Ed) enjoying himself at the Duran Duran concert a few months ago but we ran out of time…
Got registered & got those photos, pen, and journal thingies…(no dentum flossum maximus references anywhere this time) Ben came out on stage and sat with a high school music teacher from the Spokane public school district 81 who acted as a moderator and asked a number of questions (mostly concerning goals and making attempts at them …etc…) examples such as “instead of writing 1 good song in a week perhaps write 7 sh*tty songs in a day instead”

I asked him how he felt about the two websites (more utilized in the past than present) that folks have often used to learn more about him…. (The Burbs) and (at one time) (the ORG). In particular the Org which in my opinion seemed to be website that was more of an Andy Kaufman like joke that I don’t understand (& perhaps many others don’t either). Ben noted his problems with “the Org” in the past were when he was going through some difficult litigation and lawyers (likely from the other parties in the case) were taking stuff off the org site and arguing it in the court as official “Ben Folds information”.   This meant that Ben’s legal folks had to dispute/correct a significant amount of the oddball stuff coming from “the Org” and this resulted in unnecessary and considerable amounts of legal fees…hence Ben noted if they just changed the name of the site to “” it would have avoided this expensive misunderstanding….Ben noted it wasn’t only the money…The misunderstanding from having a site look somewhat official as back then the internet search engines typically put “the Org” site at the top of the list and friend of family would at times get this misinformation off “the Org” and would be confused by it…which took additional time for Ben to go and straighten out. It seems now that the search engines are better tuned these problems do not occur with the intensity that they did years ago….(which I now vaguely recall  Ben posting a letter on the Burbs site…perhaps back in 2008?...noting this problem…but I guess I didn’t understand the context of the problem from when I read it back then)

ANYHOO…good crowd
At the sound check Ben took requests. Requests I made included “On Being Frank” (which he played about 80% of…forgot most of the chords…& made many mistakes…but that made it even better IMO) and about 20% of “Hiro’s song”.

No opener the 1st part of the show Ben Played
1.   Phone in a pool (and a glass he was sipping scotch from fel” l off the piano & shattered…crew got him a more sturdy sippy cup to drink from shortly after)
2.   Annie waits
3.   All you can eat
4.   Picture window
5.   Bastard
6.   I’m not a fan
7.   Too late
8.   Bitch went nutz “the fake one”
9.   You don’t know me
10.   Evaporated
11.   Landed
12.   Capable of anything

2nd set (the paper airplane requests)
1.   You to thank
2.   Bitches ain’t Shit (Ed the bouncer seemed to enjoy this Dr Dre cover)
3.   Fred Jones Part 2
4.   The Breakup Song (Ben didn’t know it so just made something goofy up)
5.   Mess
6.   Effington
7.   All Start (Smash Mouth tune…Ben played a verse or two of it & moved on)
8.   Tiny Dancer (Elton John)
9.   Still Fighting It
10.   “Song about Owen’s 1st concert” – (Ben made it up…a Rock this Bitch moment)
11.   Emaline

Encore:  Zac & Sara, Song for the dumped, then Army.
Highlights of the Breakup Song included the change in pronunciation of Spokane to SpoKane that caused the last few verses to resemble  that Eric Clapton tune “Cocaine”

Ben has been preforming for some very important folks these past few weeks!..and he has even broke out the keytar!

Thanks Andy for putting up the link to the video. I'm slow on the internets so it was a nice surprise to have it available for view so early after their performance. Still...the amber light placement near the robots butt was peculiar...thank "The Great BenFolio" for altering my thought process over the years thru twitter and facebook that I notice such things.

Setlist for Ben Folds with Spokane Symphony Saturday Oct 18,2009

1st ½ hr was the Spokane Symphony conducted by Eckart Preu…and he is quite a character…very humorous individual. They played four tunes without Ben in the beginning. I never knew we had such a good symphony!

Ben’s Set started around 8:30 PM ~ish (give or take 15 min) and consisted of the following accompanied by the symphony.
1.   Zak and Sara
2.   Smoke
3.   The Ascent of Stan
4.   Landed
5.   Lullabye
6.   Gracie
7.   Cologne
8.   Effington
9.   Jesusland
10.   Not the Same
11.   Rock this Bitch (for the overanxious youth shouting in the back)
12.   Picture Window (One of the new tunes penned with Nick Hornby)
13.   Levi Johnston's Blues (another new tune penned with Nick Hornby)
14.   Stevens last night in town
15.   One angry dwarf & and 200 solemn faces
16.   Narcolepsy
Left stage for a few min

1st encore – Army (Solo)
2nd – Luckiest (Solo)
3rd – Protection (small part of it cause Ben doesn’t remember much of it) (Solo)
4th – Still Fighting it. (Solo)

Coolest thing was Ben gave a shout-out to ‘Trashhook’ (Me) as his wife sent him a text reminder to do so (Thank you @FleurFolds !) Additionally Ben asked me (Mr. Trashhook) for a request and I blurted out ‘Protection’ which sounded like it could be a problem for him cause it isn’t a tune he plays much so my 2nd pick was  ‘Still Fighting It’. Ben was kind enough to attempt ‘Protection’ but only got about a quarter of the way through...he was having a hard time remembering the words so he made a few lyrics up. Ben did a great job with ‘Still Fighting It’ and that was the end of the show.

The fanclub seats were incredible. Turns out Row ‘B’ ( as in Ben) was front row seating for this show. If there was any downside to sitting as close as we were it was that our point of view made it impossible to see either Sam or Jared (If he was there). The crowd at the Fox theater was great and I didn’t see much if any empty seats so I’m hopeful Ben will make it out here with greater frequency.

November 18 – Ben Folds according to this website

Batteries-check…MiniCam-check… SD cards-check… pen & notepad for setlist –check…earplugs-check(I’m pretty vigilant about hearing protection regardless of the source of emission…be it Mr. Folds band or stray machinery on the street. Friday’s show at Gonzaga is general admission seating which will make it interesting…Tomorrows at Washington State University is assigned and I have what I hope is a pretty good seat on the floor. I promised a certain “ChudleyCannons” that I would take good notes….I’ll do my best (she has set the bar quite high hasn’t she!)  and post them in this thread.  ;)

If I read this earlier on I must have forgotten it...anyhow I either read (or reread it) it yesterday
and it gave me a chuckle.

...from the Official Biography listed here on the burbs site - Rockin' the Suburbs - 2001...
...words...words...words...ah the part that made me laugh at the end...

"As for comparisons to other popular piano men, if you must, we suggest Randy Newman, the under appreciated American national treasure whose poignant songwriting and memorable characters have much in common with Folds' ordinary heroes and victims.

"Yeah! I remember seeing him on Saturday Night Live, and he played that song 'Pants'" muses Folds. "He kept singing, 'I'm gonna take off my pants.' At that point in time I said, 'Yes! That's what I want to do when I grow up.' And my dad got up from his chair and said, 'I wish he'd take off his pants and shut the f*ck up, already.'""
These stories where Ben reminisces about living with his parents really crack me up. I found the song pants on youtube and heard it...Yeah that line "I'm gonna take off my pants" does get repeated often. I could imagine my dad saying the same thing Ben's dad said about it.

General Board / New Photos on Ben Folds Myspace page?
« on: February 24, 2008, 07:53:19 PM »
I saw a comment referring to new photos on Ben's Myspace page. I typically don't look much at this page as it suffered from neglect for quite awhile. It seems someone is giving it a bit more attention now. The concert dates are current and there are some photos that I don't recall seeing the last time I looked there. I don't know who the bald guy is banging on the cowbell (It's not me!)...but i did put a comment about it.  :D
