« on: December 04, 2013, 11:14:23 AM »
The majority of this show from 1997 was put on Youtube last year or so.
I've never seen it anywhere before but it's very awesome and the guys are hilarious (esp. Underground & Darren w/ this toy guitar). They look like their having a lot of fun.

Long time poster here in Boston but wanted to send you fine folks my band Parks' two tunes.
We're releasing a 7" vinyl single this Saturday actually at Brighton Music Hall (Boston).

They're so young!

Album Board / Retrospective Liner Notes
« on: September 26, 2012, 10:50:34 AM »
Hi - I bought the 3-disc retrospective from Amazon and it didn't come with any liner notes. Is there a PDF or anything of it?
I really want to see Ben's track-by-track comments etc.

General Board / Oranjuly "10 out of 10 - Debut of the Year"
« on: September 21, 2010, 09:59:48 AM »
Hey everyone, long-time poster here.
Just wanted to let you know my band Oranjuly finally released our first LP and I think you'll like it (you obviously have good taste being here).
Really, really catchy, poppy stuff as I'm a huge Ben fan - the song Mrs. G is an homage of sorts...

Personally, I think he should take us on tour : )
The album has been getting a lot of 10 out of 10s and high praise, which is really great. We had a CD release show to 200+ people here in Boston. So much fun!

You can stream the whole thing at and on etc etc

Here's some press quotes! Hope you guys have a chance to listen as I really think you'll like it.

Oranjuly’s impeccably crafted, unabashedly retro-minded debut has your name on it - The Boston Globe

4 out of 5 stars. Oranjuly remind us just how right retro-fitted pop music can feel. –   The Boston Phoenix

10 out of 10. The best power pop debut of the year. – Powerpopaholic

10 out of 10. This is the best album I’ve received since working as a music journalist. – The Deli Magazine

Oranjuly crafts beyond solid, guitar-pop pieces, drenched in harmonic complexity and crisp instrumentation. – Supertonic/Tea Party Boston

Bring a copy to your next potluck barbecue—Oranjuly is nothing less than dessert. - Weekly Dig

Destined to be one of our 2010 favorites. – Boston Band Crush

Oranjuly has delivered once of the most impressive powerpop debuts in recent memory - Bill’s Music Forum

Their brand of dreamy pop is reminiscent of Ben Folds Five with a little Weezer thrown in, and a little twist of their own. – Playground Boston

General Board / Ben's Best Moments (in Song)
« on: September 24, 2009, 10:42:23 AM »
I was listening to Reinhold Messner today (still his best work by far IMO)

And the fugelhorn (Bacharach section) in "Don't Change Your Plans" just gave me chills.
It's a PERFECT piece of music in that section alone. I kept rewinding and listening over and over - the arpeggios on the keys and that string section coupled with the strange chord finishing out the section.
It's deceptively happy but that last chord is just something else...a big question mark of sorts.

What do you guys feel are some of Ben's best moments in certain songs?

Also, I love the vocoder part on "I Paid My Money" haha.

Ben's Old Five / Spare Reels/Pottymouth = Awesome
« on: October 29, 2008, 10:49:45 AM »
So here are some favorite moments of mine from this amazing set haha.

Spare Reels
-The fact that Ben sings the "You're livin in a fantasy world..." thing that eventually appears on Fear of Pop's "I paid my money.."
-What the hell is with that whole stuntman thing? It makes no sense at all but it's incredible
-Darren and Robert deadpanning is hilarious - especially when Robert is talking about working at a gas station or something and Ben's rich and solo.
-The reocurring blue plaid shirt that both Ben and Darren trade off on different shows

Potty Mouth
-How they keep treating Robert like shit, which is pretty mean but they are rude to him throughout the whole thing
-When Ben tells Robert not to touch his piano...
-Ben's accent and crewcut
-How happy they seemed making an amazing album. I wonder if they knew it was going to be that good while making it in this tiny crappy house.

Album Board / The "Hey I like Songs for Silverman" Thread
« on: October 27, 2008, 09:09:58 AM »
Hey, I really like this album and I feel like this is more of Ben's "divorce" album than WTN.
It's got some great stuff on it...seriously. Give it another listen.

Thoughts compared to the 5's stuff?
Ben mentioned before that "Sentimental Guy" was a Whatever and Ever outtake.
This is the most organic album by Ben so far and when it first came out I didn't like it because the EP's were kinda meh but SfS is a great singer/songwriter album for Ben and I'm glad he wrote it - it gets panned too much by fans.

Prison Food is amazing too....

Ben's Old Five / Reinhold Messner as a concept album...
« on: October 17, 2008, 11:37:09 AM »
What does everyone think of TUBORM as a concept album? Is it half-baked or what?
Lyrically, what's the theme?

I've been listening more and there are a lot of musical concepts that reprise are some that I've noticed...
Also, tunes like "Leather Jacket," "Birds" and "Air" fit in nicely with the album's flow in a playlist.

-The Army chorus/chords is the main theme Regrets (obvious...I know)
-The big end of Regrets is a reprise of the solo section on Hospital Songs (same exactly chords)

I still think this is BF's best work and most thought out and musically complex. Lots of amazing chords and subtle melodies, I really wish he would make another spacey album like this. Hospital Song and Regrets are two of his most underrated songs.

News / New Video? Tim and Eric?
« on: July 30, 2008, 08:44:53 AM »
Ok, so Ben is a big fan of Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job (he's used some of their tunes as his stage intro) and on his MySpace there are new pics of the band with Tim and Eric dressed up as a green screen.
How great is this?! T&E are hilarious and this seems like a great match.
I'm excited to say the least.
The best Tim and Eric sketch is Child Clowns.
Great job!
