The show's just a few days away... Who's excited? More importantly, who's coming?!?!?

Jesus was a robot.

If you're smart enough to build a robot, you're smart enough to not make it smarter than you. Usually.

No one sets out to create something that will destroy everything they love. Einstein's greatest regret in life was helping create the atomic bomb - he envisioned the good harnessing the power of the atom could bring, not Hiroshima.

Which is one of my favorite new songs.

See how I brought it all back home?  ::)

Speaking of the evil of robots (one of my favorite topics), some fancy-pants engineer at MIT is designing a battery which will heal itself when damaged. ( Now that’s cool, because batteries can leak all sorts of nasty things once they rupture. But hold the phone...
Abalone shells are self-assembling. What if we could make a material that is self-re-assembling? What if iPods and Blackberrys could genetically mend their own cracks? These devices get dropped; they break; what material can we make so they fix themselves?
Devices. Fix. Themselves.

Now those of you who know me (okay, you don’t even have to know me, I’ve plastered this information on every social networking site from to understand why, from an employment standpoint, this might frighten me. Particularly the part about iPods. That doesn’t frighten me. What frightens me is that this woman is wanting to take us one step closer to this:

Self-replicating, repairing machines will be the death of us all. And it gets better. Of course by better I mean worse.
Belcher’s MIT battery is comprised of a virus she and her colleagues engineered to latch itself to cobalt oxide. It does look like a clear film. Transparent, efficient, it could one day be poured onto the object it’s powering, like a coat of energizing paint.
Comprised of a virus? Oh great, that’s all we need. I’m going to toss this up there in my "sounds good on paper" wall right next to the blueprints for this abomination: You know what they have in common? One day they’ll both be used by SkyNet ( to kill everyone you’ve ever loved and their pets. Examine the URL in that last link and notice how even now the machinations of this cyber evil begin to manifest. First it edits Wikipedia, then it rains thermonuclear warheads down on us all. And we we resist, it sends the Teddybots to crush us with their cute little robopaws, and when we shoot them, well hey, no big deal, thanks to Scientific American’s 2006 Researcher of the Year, these godless gear driven demons can heal themselves.

All because this lady has some sort of snail fetish. There’s a lesson here folks, and that lesson is to never ask "what if?" Because curiosity got the cat killed by a cyborg death merchant.

My pleasure! I'm looking forward to opening up the vaults as I get the time to rip stuff. That's gotta be one of my favorite performances of Underground.

It's good to be "that guy." What a fantastic setlist, though it's a shame you had to share the night with such a crappy crowd. I can't believe they whipped out BoWWCL! That's one of my all-time favorites. You guys are quite lucky.

WHOA! He pulled out Morgan Davis!?!?!? Damn. I remember when BF5 did a gig on NPR and Ben was screwing around, showing how his process worked, and he started singing a song about his friend eating Cream of Wheat. Imagine my surprise a year later when the full blown song debuted live! Anyone have that appearance on NPR as a digital copy? I've only got the audio tape. It's a great copy, too, because I dubbed it off the master copy back when I was working at an NPR member station. I really need to digitize the vaults. I could start my own "Dick's Picks," only with the Five.

Also, the only difference between the CD and tape versions of Walter is one line. After Ben says "if he were President... But he's not," he tosses in a "so f*ck you!" That's it. Still, enough of a difference to make me buy the tape back.  ::)

There's an awesome boot from when they played Sweeden in November 1999. For sure one of my all time favorites. I'll rip it and post it for you guys tonight, if it's not already widely available.

Alright, let's get the ball rolling then.
I'll start digging around and see if anyone at work can lend a hand. I'm sure someone at Apple has a conversion device I could borrow over a weekend. I'll keep you up to date.

I just recently had to replace my turntable I'e owned since 1986 because the motor finally gave out and I couldn't track down a replacement part. It broke my heart. You can pick up a Sony from Best Buy for around $99.

BEN IS Officially added to Wakarusa. damnit.

Hey, I should make a new thread for this.

Derp.  ;D

So who wants to go camping?!?!?

I agree with you on the harmonies. I also think Sam's drumming style is closer to Ben's than the other drummers he's played with.

Looks like I've found show #51. According to Ben's MyFace profile, Mr Folds will be part of the Wakarusa music festival in Lawrence, KS along with The Flaming Lips and Cake, just to name two of the dozens playing durning the three day festival.
