Tour Board / Re: Los Angeles, CA at The Greek, 2015/06/27

Thank you for the great review, Justin! Here's the setlist that I posted last night. You really should go to the Nevada show!

I wish! Just doesn't look possible with my L.A. trip wrapping up, family plans that weekend, and the travel distance/cost.

I don't have a setlist, but last night's gig (like all of the yMusic shows I've seen so far) left me more excited about Ben's music than I have been in ages.

The night's opener was Venus and the Moon, which for those (like me) who weren't keeping track, is Frally Hynes' group. Lovely, ethereal music which felt right at home in the carved-into-the-hills Greek Theater at twilight.

As for the Ben set, "Phone in a Pool" continues to be a favorite of mine from the new material and they've added some new harmonies since I last saw it live, with Sam getting to show off a little.

Regina Spektor joined Ben and the gang for "You Don't Know Me," which felt a little like getting to see a beloved original broadway cast come back together on a TV special. Except we were there. And it was fantastic.

From the back catalogue, we were treated to a lovely run through of "Mess," and while it's become a standard in the setlist, I don't think anyone could grow tired of this band tearing the roof off "Steven's Last Night in Town." Ben opened the encore with "Evaporated," which seemed to resonate with me more than usual. Must be something about sitting under the California stars and the idea of getting in a car and going...

This being LA, there were several notables in attendance, and nothing proves "they're just like us" like looking to your right and seeing Bob Saget doing the horn part of "Army," or Sarah Silverman and Michael Sheen joining the harmonies of "Not the Same."

One final note, if any of you were on the fence about going to next week's show in Nevada on July 3rd, I'd suggest committing to it.

I'd be down for that.

I recall I leaned over to Fairbanks at the Church gig and said "this sounds uncannily like the "Such Great Heights" cover. I hear it every time.

Wish we could have had the chance to chat! I hear us about feeling old - aside from Frank you're the only person I can recall dating back to the mid 90s. (I'm sure there are others - chime in)

Please don't mistake my comment for a criticism - I think you took it far more negatively than it was intended to be.

So you guys have a point here.  This, plus The Best Imitation of Myself, plus 3 large Ben Folds Vault compilations released on iTunes, plus a live album which has alot of these songs, can you explain the reason?  I mea dont get me wrong I'm thrilled that there is obviously a demand for it, but it too much?

The reason is that BF5 has reached the point in their career when their label can start packaging random compilations and releasing them on checkout stands in book stores and gas stations.

That's right folks, we're officially old!  ;)

I'm gonna respectfully disagree with you on that point. I think Sam brings something special to the table, and that's chemistry with Ben. They have a lot of fun playing together, and we get some fantastic improvs out of that. In just over two decades of following Ben's career and seventy-some shows under my belt, I think Ben Folds Band (officially unofficial name for Ben, Sam, Chad, Andrew, and Ryan) just might be my favorite non-5 group Ben's assembled. They're just fun to watch play together - and I've enjoyed their recordings as well.

Of course this is a highly subjective, opinion-based conversation, so I get that YMMV. Just my two cents.

I'd argue that's what the Vault release and deluxe "Best Imitation" packages are.

I'd wager he's very conscious about releasing material he doesn't feel is "ready for primetime." Recall the bootlegs from the first couple of nights on the WtN tour - he asked the community to not circulate them in exchange for him releasing two shows he felt better fit what he wanted to hear.

I don't think we'll get it all, but I wouldn't write off the chance we'll see another well-curated collection of rarities, out-takes, and live cuts in a couple of years.

I think he spent so much time doing the concerto he's anxious to clear out the backlog of ideas he's had kicking around but hasn't had an outlet for.

Let's not forget that the tracks Ben Folds Band put together as the fake WTN were some of the best work he produced in that era. I'm really excited for that release.

Thanks for sharing, Sutter. Don't get me wrong, this is a decent release - just falls a little short for me given the quality of the self titled reissue. I wouldn't dream of returning my copy because I get they did the best with what was available - I just wish they'd been given the chance to release a more deluxe package for arguably the biggest release in Folds' career to date.

Got mine as well, and I must say I'm a little disappointed. The audio is the digital remaster from a few years back, which didn't cut over to vinyl as well as I would have liked. No real improvement over the original pressing, which wasn't the case with the first album. The packaging (especially the back side) looks to be a scanned copy of the original artwork, which has allowed for some fuzziness. I've posted some examples over on Twitter (@jpar0) because the files are too large for the Burbs image uploader.

If you don't have the first pressing, by all means, get a copy. If you do, unless you're an insane completist like myself you can skip this release.

The self titled vinyl mastering sounded excellent, which is nice because so many of these wax reissues as of late have been total cash grabs and the records sound like shite (Matthew Sweet's "Girlfriend," I'm looking at you).

From what I understand Folds was involved at least partially with the self titled reissue. He has been very silent about this one though, so I'm wondering how much of this is label-steered vs. artist approved.

So its pretty much confirmed that Ben Folds Five is not a constant thing, correct? I'm wondering if the reunion record was "one and done".

Also, this new album.. is this going to be a traditional Ben Folds solo album, or is this the piano concerto?

BF5 is not a constant thing, but they're open to working together again when it feels like they have something to say as a band. So unless that never happens again, it's not one and done - but it's not something we should be marking our calendars by.

From what I'm told, the new album is akin to "Way to Normal" in that it's at least partially or as a whole comprised of songs inspired by various "Rock this Bitch" jams over the years - hence Ben assembling the Justice League once again.

As far as I know, the concerto is either being released as it's own album or as part of the YMusic deal. Don't honestly know much about those plans as that's stayed under my radar.
