I'm so sorry to hear this. You've got some excellent stuff here, I hope you're getting to save a few items for yourself and if not, I know you'll get a second chance at everything you're listing.

Sounds great! Much higher quality than what we could get when we ripped my copy (which has been floating around since the late 90s) thanks to how much better digital formats have gotten.

My head-canon for the Messner follow up has been:

It's Alright with God
Tell Me What I Did
Break Up at the Food Court
Amelia Bright
The Secret Life of Morgan Davis
Price Charming
Rock Star
I Knew That'cha Could
Hero's Song
Losing Lisa

(In that order)

Uhh, what's in the VIP experience anyway?  It's real expensive.
From the VIP ticket page:

  • One (1) premium reserved seat in rows 1-15 or one (1) ticket on the General Admission Floor with early entry
  • One (1) limited edition signed black and white print of Ben’s original photography
  • One (1) autographed Ben Folds Vinyl Record
  • Dedicated on-site concert host
Really curious about the concert host thing. Is that just a waiter to bring you fancy overpriced drinks?

I'm curious about this concierge-type service at the show. That seems weird to me.

I'm going to be at the KC date for those who want to do a Burbs hangout.

I still have high hopes for the album itself. Such a unique concept

Agreed. And as time has gone by I've grown on the LP cut of Phone. Still wish it had a bit more punch to it, but it'll get me there.

That track was originally earmarked for the forthcoming Ben Folds Band release, and was recorded in Ireland during those sessions. Folds liked it with yMusic though so it was stolen from that album and added to "So There."

I don't know if the whole song was re-recorded in Chicago after the church gig or they just recorded the yMusic bits.

I'm in the minority I guess, but I like the album art.

This is a personal opinion...and I know we are all Ben fans here so this is a bit of a dig at him..but I do feel that he's not as good at producing as he used to be. I think he intentionally avoids any and all "tricks of the trade" production techniques found in stereotypical pop music. He used to find a great balance of sounding unique, but not being afraid of using what flat out works. Rockin' the Suburbs is about half full of mid-tempo to ballady songs, but they all sound so damn powerful. There is no reason why Phone in a Pool should sound more mellow than Fred Jones Pt. 2, yet it does.

I think he's still writing great songs, don't get me wrong. Past his peak? Yes, let's be honest. (though he's still VERY consistent, more than most in a career as long as his). I have all the faith in him to make great albums still, he's just got some gigantic shoes to fill with every new release, and they happen to be his own.

Well he's doing more of his own producing now. RtS was co-produced with Ben Grosse.

What happened to the song we've been rocking out to all summer? What's with this "Light FM" version? I'm reminded of Lonely Avenue. The raw songs are terrific but lost something in the released versions. "Phone in a Pool" sounds like it had the soul produced out of it.

Yeah, there was a clean version for radio. I wonder if he'll record a different vocal? "Get on with the freaking show" doesn't really fit, but what are ya gonna do.

At the LA show last month he simply omitted the swear and sang "get on with the show."

Thanks for the recording!
