Tour Board / Paper Airplane Tour Riviera Theater 10-29-17
« on: October 28, 2017, 11:05:38 PM »
Set List:
1. Phone In A Pool ("Nice inclusion of "I F*cked up the words").
2. Annie Waits
3. Uncle Walter (cool story about a drunk construction worker that worked with his dad, always telling a ten year old Ben Folds what he would do if he was president...basis for the song)
4. Bastard (with 4 part harmony)
5. Still Fighting It (Three part harmony with opening act Tall Heights).
6. So There
7. Landed
8. Not A Fan (story about a fan at a BF5 show that snuck into the back with a knife and said he wasn't a fan of them but his girlfriend was....hence the song. As Ben said, "I don't think he and his girlfriend were really on the same page").
9. Capable of Anything
10. You Don't Know Me
11. Steven's Last Night in Town
Paper Airplane Set
1. Magic
2. The Ascent of Stan
3. Philosophy
4. Verbal Request for Monster Mash...he cracked up and played the first two chords.
5. Effington
6. The Luckiest
7. Zak and Sara
8. Silver Street
9. Kate
10. Jesusland
11. Narcolepsy
1. One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces
2. Army

Lots of crowd involvement with the backing vocals tonight, and the crowd was way more into the show than the last show at the Riv with Ymusic where everyone was talking through the whole show.

Tour Board / Re: Thoughts on AMAA/VIP/Soundcheck stuff

I thought the Master's Class and Meet and Great were well worth it. It was nice to get a couple of questions answered and just to meet him and say thanks. He takes time to thoughtfully respond and goes into detail instead of just giving a brief sentence and moving on. I also snuck a question in during the meet and great, which I wasn't supposed to do but he was perfectly fine with answering it and I got a cool shot of him playing the piano in addition to my regular photo. I honestly thought the soundcheck really wasn't that great and wouldn't pay for it for a couple reasons. First, you basically get a twenty second snippit of a song so it sounds a bit rushed. Second, in my case, people ended up requesting songs that he played during the show so a little bit of that initial excitement after hearing a song begin was gone. Kudos to the people that requested Carrying Cathy and Sports and Wine but a lot of the people will be asking for Army, The Luckiest, Underground, etc. I mean yes it's cool to hear those but most of us have heard those plenty of times live already. Lastly, it's really informal in kind of a negative way where it's just people shouting out songs so there's a chance you may not even get a song in.

Transcription / Piano Players Question
« on: November 27, 2016, 10:43:23 AM »
Hi All,

Just a quick question, I am a below average piano player and I am trying to find an easier Ben song to play. So far, I am doing pretty well with Claire's Ninth, just wondering if there were other pieces that others found easier to play. God, I wish I could get the bridge section of Don't Change Your Plans down, just cannot seem to that section.

So just picked and am listening to the vinyl....really good sound actually. The digital download isn't available on the website so I don't know what is going on there. Hopefully it will be up soon; looking forward to the three bonus tracks.

Tour Board / Elgin, IL 11-5-2016 Ben Folds and a Piano
« on: November 06, 2016, 11:41:56 AM »
I did the VIP package, which was worth it. The Masterclass session was very cool and just meeting him at the piano was like a once in million opportunity. I felt like a nervous little kid though. For the masterclass I asked Ben what made him go back to the piano arrangement (heard at the end of the Silverman DVD) to turn that into So There. Interestingly, he said that piece was  going to start off his last three albums, but he could never tie everything together for it. I guess that would explain why at the end of the DVD he says, "...that's it" aka I'm stuck at this point. He said he keeps musical phrases for later use and gave up on the piece for a little bit because he began to associate it with failure...hard to believe Ben is human after all huh? He said he pulled it out again with Ymusic and it just finally clicked. The other questions were surrounding his music education and about trying to help some frustrated musicians in our group who were getting stuck writing songs. Ben's advice was actually pretty cool: if you aren't happy and just getting frustrated with it...not everyone is cut out to be a singer-song writer. If you go do something else with your life, that's fine, and if you try something else and get pulled back into music, that's a sign to stick with it. He said then you need to go pick up your sword again and go fight the beast. When I went up to get my picture, I also asked him about the 9:00 Don't Change Your Plans version, and he said it did exist at one point but is gone forever as the mix tape was edited, cut and thrown away. He said the piece was way too long and his producer had to cut it because the album was too long already. Reinhold was supposed to be one continuous piece of music that flowed from song to song. He even got up and played the piano reminding how Army should have flowed directly into Regrets with that chord progression. Really cool. I'm not a big fan of the soundcheck for two reasons, first, he ended up playing some of the songs during the paper airplane segment, second, it's just kind of weird having him play like two bars of a song and then moving on to something else. Sports and Wine was really cool though.

1. Carrying Cathy
2. Army
3. Adelaide
4. Sports and Wine (Stunningly just sat down and played this easily like he plays it every day.)
5. Levi Johnston's Blues
6. Underground
7. Do It Anyway (had to pull out the note book to look)
8. Gracie
9. The Luckiest
10. Hiroshima
11. Cologne

Set List:
1. Phone in a Pool
2. Annie Waits
3. Last Polka
4. Late
5. The Ascent of Stan
6. Bastard (4 piece harmony crowd help)
7. Bitch Went Nutz
8. Effington
9. You Don't Know Me
10. Landed
Paper Airplane:
1. Where's Summer B
2. Fred Jones Part II
3. Gracie
4. Piano Concerto Snippets (for some reason lots of Classical Music requests?)
5. Not the Same
6. Cologne
7. Fur Natalie Klein/Rock This Bitch (Requested Beethoven's Fur Elise....obviously turned into a Rock This Bitch)
8. The Luckiest
9. Ymusic Unreleased Song (Jpar on his 80th?? Show (Congrats Man!) requested something new, so he went in the back, got his phone and played a recording directly off his phone into the microphone...sounded really good, typical Ben lyrics though which were more comical than serious).
10. Emaline
11. Come On Eileen (Dumb, just repeated it over and over for a minute).
12. Underground

13. Kate
14. Zak and Sara (EPIC)

Opener Dotan was actually pretty interesting....normally a six piece band with just two guys. If the crowd wasn't talking so much you probably could have actually heard them.

Set List:
1. Ymusic Selection
2. So There
3. Capable of Anything (Ben mentioning Bugfest 2016 also known as too many people talking during the show).
4. Not A Fan
5. Effington (Ben screws up the words and then says "I'm f*cking f*ckington :)
6. Phone in a Pool
7. Mess
8. Ymusic Selection
9. Rock This Bitch in Chicago
10. Not the Man
11. Chicago "The Windy City" is not so Windy today (pretty much Ben rehashing past Chicago shows...mentioned solo piano shows at the Vic :)
12. Jesusland
13. Erase Me
14. Song for the Dumped
15. Steven's Last Night in Town (Just awesome, clarinet solo probably could have gone on for twenty minutes and no one would have cared).
16. Landed (Solo)
17. You Don't Know Me
18. Army

I would have to agree artistically kind of disappointed that the picture is so low quality. Still really cool they re-released this because I am not paying Ebay/Amazon prices of $200.00 to get one of the original first pressing copies. Now we need Reinhold and Live to be re-released  :)

So hard to choose beyond So There and I'm not the Man, both fantastic songs. I love the first break in So There.

Thanks again Steady as she goes for posting this, can't wait to get my notification. Now how about reinhold or Rockin the Suburbs re-releases?

@Steady As She Goes: Silverman is very difficult to find at a reasonable price. Usually on Amazon it's at $100 range. I actually purchased mine through the Joe D Lorenzo Ben Folds merchandise sale and got it for 60.00. I have discovered the longer you wait with vinyl, the price just keeps going up. I hope he comes out with a re-release of Reinhold and RTS. I know they were discussing a re-release of reinhold with bonus tracks, but that appears to have died, I wanted to hear the original 8 min version of Don't Change Your Plans.

Thanks very much Sutter for doing this. One more favor to ask and kind of embarrassed to ask. I am still a relative novice when it comes to piano and more used to sheet music where I write out the individual notes and then play the chords. I know some of the basic chords, but other than the G flat 6, I don't know the individual notes that make up the remainder of the "add 4" chords for the rest of the song. Also are there specific notes on the bass that correspond to those chords? Again, kind of embarrassed in asking, but I would appreciate the help/explanation.
