Tour Board / Re: 9/29 - Minneapolis [with recording]
« on: October 01, 2012, 01:49:33 PM »
Yeah, the crowd was really weird. I mean, they were great - very into the show - but I was glad Ben pointed out how odd the whole sit-stand-sit thing was, because at that point I was getting rather tired of it (and the guy who yelled at everyone to stand for "Brick." Ummm...no.)

But the guys were great! The show started off a little slow, but they really started to rock the place by the time they hit the second third of the show. I'm pretty sure they played the last four (five?) songs of the original set without pause (with the audience dividing themselves up into the horn section for "Army.") The energy by the end was incredible. I got a kick out of Ben attempting to throw a drumstick to Darren mid-song, missing horribly, and then laughing at how terrible it was.

The improv was great, because I believe it was inspired by some girl next to me screaming "Zak and Sara" like a ninny over the beginning of the song.

It was a fantastic show and a dream come true for a Five fan who was born a little too late to see them the first time around!

(And a huge THANK YOU in advance for uploading a recording! I was camera-less and very sad about it.)

I f*cking love it.

You're welcome for that intuitive and deeply thought-provoking analysis.

Anybody else watching the Christmas special? I'm trying to make it through the Mariah Carey and Justin Bieber songs...it's tough. Ben and Sara's duet was cute, though I kept thinking of Elf the entire time they were singing. And when is Nick going to profess his love for Ben? MAN CRUSH. That awkward laugh after he said he wanted to snuggle up with Sara but not Ben...kinda makes you wonder.  ;)

"Oh and how have you...Ben."

LOL I just snorted my oatmeal. Started my day off right!

Beyond disrespectful to mention how many times he's been married.

I was trying to figure out how mentioning that was relevant to anything they were talking about.

I came to the conclusion that...it wasn't.

Here's a direct link to the podcast: http://www.podtrac.com/pts/redirect.mp3/traffic.libsyn.com/theadamcarollashow/2011.09.29ACS.mp3 - Ben comes in around 38:00

And a short promo video (with Ben acting a bit more animated than usual for an interview): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U90PyZyFLPg&feature=player_embedded#!

Lol-ing at that promo vid and Ben's discussion of the key of C.

"It's a racist key...'cause there's no black keys."

For those of you who missed Ben co-hosting on the Today Show today:

Also, Ben playing a lyrics game:

Even if you're pissed that Ben and the TV are becoming buds, the videos are still worth checking out. (I think) they're pretty funny.

I was browsing through my files earlier, and I found a couple of RTS-related backgrounds that I whipped up awhile ago. Just in case anyone is interested.

Happy Hump Day!

this makes me excited for his gig with the st louis symphony orchestra! i have not yet seen him with a symphony orchestra.

I had my reservations about seeing him with an orchestra when I saw him the first time around with the MN Orchestra, but those were quickly put to rest. These shows have just proved to me that:

1.) Ben Folds can rock the shit out of anything (or any place) and
2.) Orchestras can also rock the shit out of anything.

‘Still’ [written for the 2006 film Over the Hedge].  Not the most popular song, never gets requested, no reason to put it on there other than that, at that time in my life, I think it’s the best that I did.

bullshit its never been requested ive been asking for it for over a year!

I was actually wondering about that...I know your Still campaign has been going strong for awhile now.

He’s confident about at least one more future career path: composer/lyricist of a Broadway musical.  “I will do a musical one day,” Folds admits.

Am I the only one who finds that to be exciting?

Thanks for the link!

I attended the show last night, and I agree - Ben had a lot of energy and seemed to really be enjoying himself (he actually broke into laughter/giggles during Hiro's Song.) I think tilo has all of the songs; here is the order (to the best of my memory):

Effington
Smoke
The Ascent of Stan
Still Fighting It (I don't know if it was just me, but Ben seemed to sing this one with a TON of emotion...absolutely beautiful.)
Zak and Sara (like tilo mentioned, before playing this he talked about how they usually opened with this song, and he would come running on stage and people would go nuts, so he left the stage while the orchestra began the intro and ran out to the piano. And the crowd did indeed go nuts.)
Picture Window
Jesusland
Adelaide (nice surprise!)
One Angry Dwarf

- Intermission -

Steven's Last Night in Town
Landed
Brick
Not the Same (with 3-part harmonies, even though Ben never mentioned them or had us rehearse them...he said later that he was pretty impressed that we pulled it off!)
Rock This Bitch with the Minnesota Orchestra (very long version, one of the better ones I've heard)
Fred Jones pt. 2
Cologne

- Encore (with Orchestra) - At least, I'm pretty sure this was the song they played for the encore...

Narcolepsy (they BLEW THE ROOF OFF during this one!)

- Second Encore (solo Ben) -

Improv about MN Orchestra (Orchestra folks are real people, too, except they can play the shit out of their instruments)
Annie Waits (Sam came out and played drums, Ben left the piano partway through and began playing one of the orchestra's xylophones (which was hilarious, because once he went back to the piano Orchestra Hall personnel came out and took the mallets away))
Hiro's Song with shaker-and-mic solo (knocked the mic off the stand and broke into laughter)
Army (again, audience broke themselves up into the brass duet without instruction)

I believe that is the correct order. This was only my second show (the first was in also in Orchestra Hall Halloween of 2009,) and it was another amazing gig. He was talkative, which was nice, telling stories about the songs before or after playing them. Great atmosphere, tons of energy - I thought he was going to snap the sustain pedal off the Steinway - and very engaged crowd. Even though it was 100 degrees in the concert hall by the end of the show, I was all smiles. I brought a new-to-Ben friend, and she said she really enjoyed the show. Conversion success!

For anybody who didn't see the video on Ben's twitter (or wasn't at the show,) here's the show opener, of which Ben said, "there's really no excuse for this."

Album Board / Re: General Lonely Avenue Discussion
« on: January 02, 2011, 01:13:32 PM »
Random, but I popped LA in the other day after having not heard it through for awhile and had a few re-revelations (is that possible?), now that it's had a loooong time to sink in.

I liked the album upon first listen, but it really didn't seem like something that I would go back to as often as I do with, say, RtS. Yeah...no. I was wrong. It took awhile, but LA has definitely grown on me (kinda like WtN did, only I can see this one sticking even more.)

DAMN BEN'S VOICE SOUNDS GREAT ON THIS ALBUM.

And Paul Buckmaster could probably arrange strings for a McDonald's commercial and make them sound epic and beautiful.

Wasn't a big fan of "Belinda" first few go arounds. It's now my favorite track, tyvm. I'm kinda wondering if I had a head cold or something the first time I listened to it, because I don't really see how I didn't immediately fall in love with it. Same with "Levi." Didn't love it at first, but it's so damn catchy and brilliant in all it's vulgar hilarity that I can't skip it.

While the strings on "Picture Window" didn't do a whole lot for me, I'm really starting to love them now. They don't add anything, I don't think, at least not as compared to the pop and demo versions, but I'm liking this version of the song just as much as the others.

However, still can't get into "Password." There's nothing wrong with it to me - musically it's genius and lyrically it's kinda clever, but I don't know...I find myself skipping that one more often than not.

But in all honesty, I found the album so much more enjoyable after giving it another thorough listening-through. Like I said, it's certainly grown on me - I like it a LOT more than I did the first few times I listened to it.

Just my random and probably very un-needed two cents.  :)
