Heat index was over 100F degrees that day, so needless to say it was hot as balls.  A very typical festival-y crowd.  He did lots of improv riffing on the fact that he was playing a music festival with 40-year old rock bands.  Epic drum solo on SLNIT with several roadies constructing a drum kit seemingly out of thin air.  Two girls were pulled out of the audience for BAS, but neither of them knew the words (or got nervous and forgot them, probably this) and just kind of swayed to the music.  Ben tried to feed them some lines and then just outsourced it to the audience.  Wishing in retrospect I'd had the guts to volunteer... guess there's always this fall.

ALSO very drunk man close to me that was super excited about the Chatroulette videos who kept screaming out "YOUTUBE!!! YOUTUBE THAT SHIT, DUDE!!!"  According to my husband, at one point he leans over to a friend and whispers something to him, to which his friend looks at him in horror and says, "No, dude, I think that's a bad idea!"  My entertainment dollar exploded in my pocket on that one.

Finally, Kenny Chesney fans are freaking intense.  I rode a shuttle with someone who has him airbrushed on her living room wall.

Anybody else going to the Louisville show?  I can be the designated setlist taker.  I was just curious to see if any other Burbanites will be there.  Seemed like a lot of people weren't too enthralled with the Hullabalou lineup here.

Ben's Old Five / Selling my vinyl
« on: May 22, 2010, 04:35:57 PM »
So I'm paring down my record collection gradually until I get rid of it for a couple reasons (#1 is a cross-country move in a year or so), and I'm ready to send my Folds vinyl off to a happy new home. I thought I'd let my Burbs homies get first crack.  I don't really have a price in mind, so PM me with an offer.  I'd really prefer if all of it went to the same place.  The bulk of it is Ben solo, but since the other vinyl thread is here, I figured it was okay.

LPs
Reinhold Messner
Rockin' the Suburbs
Songs for Silverman

45s
Landed/ BAS
Bizarre Christmas Incident/ Lonely Christmas Eve

I have a few bonus 45s I'm willing to throw in (Ben Lee, Spoon, Divine Comedy) and a Tom Lehrer LP as well.

Granted, that's from taking one semester of media law.  I'm by no means a qualified legal advice giver.

As long as you didn't have any intent to sell the game or use it outside of the classroom, I would think that'd be covered under Fair Use.

there's a rumor going around that ben is replacing max weinberg on conan 3.0.

I call bullshit.  it's a nice thought, though.

I'm gonna go with the 2002 internet rumors, even though I just missed being in the fandom then by a couple months.  I kind of wish Bill Clinton actually did play sax onstage at a show.

General Board / Re: Ben's Southern Accent?
« on: April 21, 2010, 06:42:16 AM »
The accent is a lot more pronounced on the 1990 demos and the solo album.  You can still hear it pop up from time to time.

Now for the more existential part of your question...I'm from WV and used to work in broadcast, and I can definitely say that people don't take you as seriously if you have a thick accent.  While there's no requirement, there's definitely some pressure to at least tone it down if not lose it entirely.  So you're faced with the dilemma "should I lose this and lose part of my identity, or keep it and suffer some fallout?"  So I can definitely identify with "Best Imitation of Myself."

And sometimes it just happens by accident.  Sure, I guess there's that subconscious pressure no matter what you do, but if you're out of the area, sometimes you just lose the accent without any effort.  I work in customer service now, and I find that if I'm on a long call, sometimes I subtly pick up that customer's accent as I speak to them.  And that's maybe with 10 minutes of exposure, if that.  Imagine having to travel around the world and being out of the South for months at a time.

Chase is "Kurt Cobain in a black suit" to  my left.

He kinda does look like him in this pic...just sayin... :)

When he saw it, he said it was a lot better than being confused for Kid Rock... which has also happened.

So I went to MTP and it was pretty cool. There were about 40 kids crammed into a store no bigger than my apartment (which isn't big at all).  It was more of an extended meet & greet session.  I saw him fold a shirt once, and he asked another employee about the price of t-shirts, so I suppose he earned his "record store clerk" merit badge. Good atmosphere.  When my friend Chase and I left, there was a line around the block to get in!  Pics forthcoming, though you can see me in the pic from Ben's twitpics account: http://twitpic.com/1gc79i  I'm the one with glasses under the pink Velvet Underground shirt, glaring for reasons I can't seem to recall now.  And, according to a twitpic commentator, Chase is "Kurt Cobain in a black suit" to  my left.

Dear fans that have attended pre-NYC shows,

We're sorry. We're really really sorry.

Love and my deepest sympathies,
-Quilty.

Normally I would glare furiously at this point, but I can't be mad at you, Ms. Quilty.
