General Board / Folds/Five creeping into your real life?
« on: August 08, 2013, 10:58:33 AM »
I mean, anyone who knows me outside of these red walls...
But, I mean more along the lines of people who may not be aware of your Foldsian nature. Trying to either introduce you, or show you something 'new' you haven't seen before.

my prof just tried to out do me on Ben Folds knowledge. 8in8 is not hard. DID tell me we're gonna watch Amanda Palmer' TEDTalk in class. AND Because the Origami IN CLASS. PEOPLE. PEOPLE. Folds shit in my classroom. AND I didn't put it here. I patiently await the day I can school people in my knowledge. Hahaaaaaa.

He even said it in front of the whole class. Said - I might show you a video you don't know about.
Always wrong. Ha. I am a bit of an encyclopedia, aren't I? I am always up for new things, but 8in8 is something we here at theburbs (which was included in my homework) reported on. Yay. Go team.

Tour Board / Columbus, OH - July 5, 2013

One Angry Dwarf
Erase Me
Sky High
Draw a Crowd
Rock this Bitch [A quite good one with a great call and response between us in the crowd and Ben. It had pretty good length and sounded like it could turn into a song - a legit one, someday.... like I groan when people yell for it - but it was good]
Brick (after which Ben tells us that they sang the song 'wrong' to be a hit in the 90s. and proceeds to sing a part of the song ala Pearl Jam/Eddie Vedder. Quite funny. And very ridiculous)
Do It Anyway
Bad, Bad Leroy Brown (cover, obviously)
Song for the Dumped (great version of it, this evening - Darren and Robert were exceptionally on)
Army (At least from my spot, the audience part stunk. hahhaaa)

Good show. Got a veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery short quick hello with Darren and Robert. Also saw Ben pop in during Guster's set (who were also awesome, duh) to take a picture or two - or like thirty. Alicia was also in attendance this evening.

Andy and I have been working on some new features for here on the burbs too, but with social media as it is, trying to send you a friendly reminder about your favorite redboards daily. I've started a Song of the Day (but always something obscure or a live cut - don't expect much studio stuff). If you have any suggestions post away! (on any of the four mediums)

A lot of fun opinions. I of course responded in a nice comment with some information that is a bit off - or things they were uncertain if they were right about....

"The true power in Ben Folds Five.... comes from Darren and Robert's playing."
"There was always something special about this configuration of three people.... something that when people found out that they were working together again, sort of stood up and cheered about."
"Robert Sledge and Darren Jessee are as accomplished at their instruments as Ben Folds is to the piano." (You don't have to convince me)
"One of the things that I appreciate about Ben Folds, despite whatever character flaws you might want to point out, is not letting personal pride or stubbornness of not recognizing, what a lot of the fans recognize, that there is a unique chemistry to these three musicians"

News / Folds' Piano Concerto World Debut Set For March
« on: March 20, 2013, 11:45:11 AM »
Nashville Symphony gets it first (not a huge shocker).

 Nashville Symphony
Giancarlo Guerrero, conductor
Ben Folds, piano
Wagner - Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde
Bartók - Miraculous Mandarin Suite
Rossini - William Tell Overture
Ben Folds - Piano Concerto (World Premiere)
Tickets to this concert are currently only available to 2013/14 season ticket holders.

Be one of the very first to hear pop icon Ben Folds premiere his brand-new piano concerto, co-commissioned by the Nashville Symphony. He’ll bring his knack for memorable melodies and sophisticated musicianship to the stunning sound of a full symphony orchestra. The William Tell Overture — best known as the theme of The Lone Ranger — will add to the fun, while Bartók’s Miraculous Mandarin and Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde will show off the exceptional musicians in our GRAMMY®-winning orchestra.

Thurs March 13, Friday March 14, Saturday March 15.

Sounds like a good way for me to ring in 28.

It starts just before the halfway mark. There is no timer. It's a phone interview with Ben only, hence the parentheses. Also more of the interview is in this month's issue on newstands!

Also, Ben's phone voice sounds weird to me on this. Anyone else? Maybe I'm crazy. It's 3 am

It's certainly a good listen. Glad to hear Darren on a interview that he actually speaks.

And if you ever wanted to know boxers or briefs?

And for the first time in two years the guys stuck around at a show I was at. It was wonderful. I've clearly talked to Darren at Hotel Lights gigs (there's only been one). But this was my fourth show this year and, including three solos last year I was batting .000 SUCKED.

General Board / HAPPY BIRTHDAY #46 BEN!
« on: September 12, 2012, 12:15:19 AM »
See title.
Seriously though.

The man was my gateway into my indie music life. Which is a huge part of who I am, and what I do…. and I’ve made some of my absolute best friends because of our mutual Folds appreciation. Y'all here on the burbs mean a lot to me, if we know each other well or not. It's crazy anytime someone knows me in public because of the two words Chudley Cannons. (It is almost scary. Met a kid at a Dr Dog concert who then knew who I was though his brother because of this place). AND. Well. Let's keep doing what we're doing in honor of the man who made it all. (Plus Darren and Robert, of course.)

Joyuex Anniversaire.
Feliez Navidad??

Tour Board / bf5 old st pats - chicago - 6/28/12
« on: July 08, 2012, 09:45:00 AM »
All these first shows seem to have the same set list. Which is fine with me. It's like a greatest hits tour, in a simple way. They've all been festival gigs. It's like the warm up tour. :)
Old St Pats was cut short because of the impending storm (which did apparently, you know, take out power for a good chunk of the country).
1. Cannery
2. Pyser
3. Fair
4. SCC
5. Walter
6. Summer
7. Mess
8. Cover of the Rolling Stone (Cover, incomplete)
9. Battle
10. Brick
11. Emaline
12. Army
13. Kate
14. Philosophy
15. Underground

16. Dumped

Burbians in the front (where we BELONG)
