Album Board / Re: General Lonely Avenue Discussion

I really, really want to like this album, and I'm sure after 10 listens, I will.  My first impression was disappointment.

Perhaps it's because I've always heard Levi Johnston's Blues live with dirty, bar piano and mic-tapping as the percussion... but I just feel like the album (and that song in particular) was really overdone.  I also think the lyrics are high in the mix, which I don't like all that well (it's why I can't stand listening Dashboard Confessional at ALL).  Now, like others have posted, I'm sure this was allllll intentional.  More synth, less headbanging piano, louder lyrics.  It's an album written FOR lyrics, so it makes sense.

I just was hoping for a little more Classic-Ben treatment.  You know, the wild (fake) Dr. Yang from Stems and Seeds.  Trusted.  More pounding rhythm and keys.  Like I said, I'm sure I'll be fine with this album once it starts making more sense to my confused ears, but I'm a little sad today.

They responded to my inquiry about 'what does the 10 dollars shipping/handling' buy with "You get a new membership package with stuff!"

To which I responded "Exactly what stuff?"

Awaiting response.

I think my membership expired in January, as well-- and now I'm getting the renewal notice.  Hrmpf.

What really blew my mind was when in the renewal process, I noticed a TEN DOLLAR SHIPPING AND HANDLING FEE?!?!?!??!?!?!

WTFolds is THAT?  I figure we got the freebie Stems & Seeds already, and given the swag was such crap for the last time I joined I can not IMAGINE *gag* what they would send this time.

I emailed them about the shipping/handling fee-- to determine WHAT, if anything, was being shipped for the 10 dollars.  (Nothwithstanding the fact that my membership prlly expired 8 months ago, but don't tell them that one.)

I'll post their explanation of what the 10 dollars buys :)

General Board / Re: Ben's Southern Accent?
« on: April 21, 2010, 06:36:52 AM »
Ha.  I absolutely think he has a Southern accent.  But I'm from Northern Ohio.  I think it's much less apparent in his singing, but when he talks, there's an extension in certain sounds.  I don't really think North Carolina is the accent-iest place, but I know he went to NYC after college at some point, which may be where that line in Best Imitation of Myself stems from.  Like AliKat said, Colbert completely abolished his and there is a negative stereotype....

That said, I'm thinking Ben was showing his irritation with people who would suggest dropping an accent to be popular in Best Imitation of Myself.

My 11th folds show and easily my favorite! (first time seeing him solo)
Morgan Davis (which I requested!)
This show was awesome. He was on fire (nothing new there) and played forever, taking a ton of requests. His drum solo on Steven's Last night was amazing. All I can say is his fingers must hurt like hell after tonight.

THANK YOU for requesting Morgan Davis.  I wasn't close enough to yell anything, but I was SO hoping I'd hear that sometime.

To echo benfoldspianoplaya -- I was writing the setlist as the show was going, so I'll give you the order (not that it really matters but I thought I'd share for posterity's sake):

Free Coffee (slight issue with the lyrics)
Annie Waits
Sentimental Guy
Effington (he commented that he made the song up on stage... or at least started writing it while on stage)
Time (comments: "this was a song on a very mid-tempo album... and it got overlooked [as an option for playing on tour]")
All U Can Eat
Brainwasched (with story-- he lamented "You know, if the song wasn't so bad... it could have been "you're so vain"-- that's a good song"
Bitch Went Nutz (with a black maracca (sp?!?) - I got the feeling that most of the crowd didn't have Stems & Seeds so they were umm... surprised to say the least)
Levi Johnston's Blues (he commented that he "blew most of the album budget" in the middle of the song on hand claps, a choir, and other things)
Picture Window
You Don't Know Me
Still Fighting It
Zak and Sara
Stephen's Last Night in Town with Drum Solo
Hiro's Song (on Drums)
Mess (by request)
Hiroshima (by request)
Rock This Bitch (by screamed request)-- On Drums
Emmaline (by request)
Secret Life of Morgan Davis (ZOMG!)
Not the Same
One Angry Dwarf & 200 Solemn Faces  \m/
Rockin The Suburbs (with mouth-made sound effects)
Song for the Dumped

i would love those if i was 10...

i think the darker meanings behind some of these would be up to your consideration...

Thank you for taking the time to send that list.  I will be borrowing several.  I had been debating Jesusland.  I'm not sure what to do about that one.  I think that it would actually be quite fitting, in that the theme of the song is about staying true to something instead of using it as a way to get what you want, but I'm not sure.  Again, I really appreciate you taking the time to make these suggestions.

Here's the mix I made for my grandma.  No cursing at all, and only Still Fighting It has any kind of overt beer/smoking reference.

You might also look into the Over the Hedge soundtrack.

A very impressive mix.  I think that I will have to *borrow* ideas from you on this one.  She will LOVE Best Imitation of Myself especially, I think.

Hi all--

My cousin (who is 10 years old) is really getting in to playing piano (HOORAY).  I want her to be able to hear Ben-- be inspired by Ben, whatever.  However, her parents would PREFER I not expose her to music with a ton of explicit lyrics.

So, here is the challenge:

Please help me think of a few of the best Ben Folds songs that are reasonably-worded for a child with somewhat-conservative parents.  Yes, yes, I find it tempting to lace the playlist with loads of f-bombs because I think it's funny \m/ but I think that my own amusement needs to be subverted to her potential musical development.

By best, I mean most musically-interesting.  Vignettes in awesome piano-playing.

The off-limits words are: f---, b----, and c---.  Probably a--hole, too.

They can be Ben Folds solo or group work, and I will NOT be including Brick.  (That's not even due to subject matter-- I just despise that song, and I despise the people who only like Ben because of that song.)

Thus far, I have:
Dr. Yang
The Ascent of Stan
Missing the War
The Last Polka
Missing the War...

The chick from the Pussycat Dolls had me seriously contemplating my own mortality.  The group from Tufts made me grin, though :)  The dumb chick (judge) is just a demographic... but it would be nice if she talked less.  I mean, she called the lady-quartet "Dope."  And I am pretty sure that when she says "dope," she means "I couldn't really come up with anything intelligent to say as per usual but I need to say SOMETHING while shaking my hair and batting my eyelashes."   ::)

Ugh, and to think this might actually get me to watch reality TV.

I like Ben... but I don't know if I like Ben that much.

Okay, okay... I like Ben that much.  I'd watch it.  But I probably wouldn't tell anyone.

They had BETTER not introduce him as "the guy who plays 'Brick'".  I'd have to shoot myself.

Absolutely - just make sure the song is completely over - ie, don't start cheering during the pause in Narcolepsy. This is actually one of my favorite parts of symphony shows - getting to hear the whole song without people screaming over the soft parts and pauses.

You got to pick seats? We just got handed a couple by the ordering site and figured, they are in the third row, let's take 'em.

Yeah... I called the Kennedy Center WHILE I was using the Fanclub presale link and said "What does this seat location really mean?!?!?!"  I think the lady I talked with believes me to be completely insane, now.  Apparently, anything odd-numbered is on the keyboard-side, anything even is on the other side, and we went for partierre boxes (box 13...ooooh scary)... because I'm really short and every time I go to a concert I am stuck behind a tall person.  (Nothing against tall people, but seriously, I love paying to see the back of someone else's head.)  We're flying to DC specifically to see this show, so I wanted to make it count... but I'm not sure I really chose all that well.

Totally going.  Not happy with the seats I chose (I don't know if being on the keyboard side was REALLY worth the angle we're going to be staring at).  For javajunkie... is it okay to still cheer wildly after songs, given that it's an orchestra???
