General Board / Bitch Went Nuts music video
« on: July 14, 2011, 02:09:15 PM »
Hey all.  A long, long while ago, I posted a call for extras for a fan video I was making for Ben's "Bitch Went Nuts."  A few months before, I met him after a show in Columbus and asked about making a fan music video.  Actually, it went more like "hi-i'm-a-filmmaker-and-i'd-like-to-make-a-music-video-for-you-not-for-money-just-for-fun."  I had every intention of just saying "Hi, good show" but that's where my brain went.  Instead of calling the cops, he just smiled and said "Yeah, sure.  Cool."

Just to make sure I hadn't hallucinated the whole thing, I made sure I was at National Record Store Day, again in Columbus.  I explained about the previous meeting and my idea for a video, and Ben seemed very supportive of the idea.

At any rate, I finished it up a couple months ago.  I realized today that I'd never posted here about it and that a few people were interested in my cast call thread.  So without further ado, here you go:

Album Board / Associated Press Lonely Avenue Review

Ben Folds and Nick Hornby, "Lonely Avenue" (Nonesuch)

"Belinda" is a ballad about a has-been singer on the nostalgia circuit who each night performs his one hit, a love song written about a woman he later lost and now misses, which makes reprising his golden oldie for sing-a-long crowds a bizarre form of public torture.

Such is the richness of a three-verse plot when a novelist turns lyricist.

Nick Hornby ("High Fidelity," "About a Boy") wrote the words for the 11 songs on "Lonely Avenue," and Ben Folds set them to music. The collaboration clicks: There's a depth to the lyrics rare in pop songs, and they inspire top-notch work from the ever-inventive Folds.

Hornby finds fresh ways to approach his topics, such as on "Belinda," which is both funny and sad. He writes about divorce from the perspective of the couple's 9-year-old daughter on "Claire's Ninth," and shows sympathy for Bristol Palin's ex in "Levi Johnston's Blues." Hornby's lyrics are smart, profane, violent, poignant, hilarious and absolutely true.

Folds pairs them with a wide range of sounds and plenty of catchy melodies. On "From Above" he sings about serendipity to a finger-snapping dance beat, while "Levi Johnston's Blues" is built on clattering percussion and superb arranger Paul Buckmaster's grinding strings. As for "Belinda," the coda rocks like the Ben Folds Five.

CHECK THIS OUT: "Saskia Hamilton" deserves a Grammy for polysyllabic silliness. The rollicking tune sings the praises of the American poet: "She's got more assonance than she knows what to do with."

Heat index was over 100F degrees that day, so needless to say it was hot as balls.  A very typical festival-y crowd.  He did lots of improv riffing on the fact that he was playing a music festival with 40-year old rock bands.  Epic drum solo on SLNIT with several roadies constructing a drum kit seemingly out of thin air.  Two girls were pulled out of the audience for BAS, but neither of them knew the words (or got nervous and forgot them, probably this) and just kind of swayed to the music.  Ben tried to feed them some lines and then just outsourced it to the audience.  Wishing in retrospect I'd had the guts to volunteer... guess there's always this fall.

ALSO very drunk man close to me that was super excited about the Chatroulette videos who kept screaming out "YOUTUBE!!! YOUTUBE THAT SHIT, DUDE!!!"  According to my husband, at one point he leans over to a friend and whispers something to him, to which his friend looks at him in horror and says, "No, dude, I think that's a bad idea!"  My entertainment dollar exploded in my pocket on that one.

Finally, Kenny Chesney fans are freaking intense.  I rode a shuttle with someone who has him airbrushed on her living room wall.

Tour Board / Louisville 7/24 (Saturday!!)

Anybody else going to the Louisville show?  I can be the designated setlist taker.  I was just curious to see if any other Burbanites will be there.  Seemed like a lot of people weren't too enthralled with the Hullabalou lineup here.

Ben's Old Five / Selling my vinyl
« on: May 22, 2010, 04:35:57 PM »
So I'm paring down my record collection gradually until I get rid of it for a couple reasons (#1 is a cross-country move in a year or so), and I'm ready to send my Folds vinyl off to a happy new home. I thought I'd let my Burbs homies get first crack.  I don't really have a price in mind, so PM me with an offer.  I'd really prefer if all of it went to the same place.  The bulk of it is Ben solo, but since the other vinyl thread is here, I figured it was okay.

Reinhold Messner
Rockin' the Suburbs
Songs for Silverman

Landed/ BAS
Bizarre Christmas Incident/ Lonely Christmas Eve

I have a few bonus 45s I'm willing to throw in (Ben Lee, Spoon, Divine Comedy) and a Tom Lehrer LP as well.

News / Ben Folds at National Record Store Day in Columbus
« on: April 14, 2010, 11:09:47 AM »
Not sure how many people keep up with the Facebook page, but this came across my newsfeed a few minutes ago:

"I'll be at Magnolia Thunderpussy Records in Columbus, OH on Record Store Day on April 17th working the register, taking trash out, alphabetizing records hanging out. Hope to see you there."

General Board / making a music video
« on: April 14, 2010, 11:06:57 AM »
Hey guys, hope you don't mind a little self-whoring self-promotional thread.  Back in October at Ben's symphony show in Columbus, I met him outside of the show.  Before I realized what I was saying, I asked him if I could make a music video for him.  It was a very dorky, steamrolling type request (hi-here's-my-business-card-i-love-you-can-i-make-a-video-not-for-pay-but-because-i-like-you?" )  I was happily surprised when he was cool with the request.

I had planned to start shooting after Thanksgiving before the weather got bad.  Thanks to Snowmageddon, the weather got bad right after Thanksgiving.  Granted, we didn't get dumped on like Philly and DC, but we got enough snow for me to get stranded in a car on the highway for 16 hours and enough for me to bitch about it.

But I digress.  I've started shooting this month.  Today I'm doing a giant call for extras.  I know this is short notice unless you live in Columbus or closer.  I'll also need some extras/ minor character actors throughout the shoot.  If any of you Burbs ladies are interested, shoot me an email.  You can also check out my production company's site if you're interested in the extras call today or want more info in general:

Because my entertainment mentor hammered in the need to always proactively cover your ass, I want to note a few things. Ben isn't involved with the production other than to say he thought it was a cool idea.  I'm not getting any kind of compensation for this project, and Sony/Epic aren't affiliated with or endorsing it.

Anyway, if you guys are interested in the project, I can give some updates during the shooting.  If not, keep calm and carry on.  Or get excited and make things.  I prefer the latter.

Tour Board / Hershey PA April 10
« on: April 08, 2010, 05:32:58 AM »
Is anyone else going to this show?  My buddies and I are going to make a weekend of it.

I can be the designated setlist person, but I'll probably not be able to post it until the following Monday.

General Board / Ben Folds Tourist Trip
« on: June 11, 2009, 04:45:00 PM »
Hey guys, particularly you folks that went to the reunion concert.  My fiance and I are going to Disney on our honeymoon and are using Chapel Hill as a halfway stopping point on the journey.  It works pretty well distance-wise, but I'm geeking out because it's Folds country.  Therefore:

(1) what do I absolutely need to see?
(2) give me a few geeky places where I can take my picture at (like "hey, this was mentioned in this song!")
(3) what's there to do in that town?

General Board / Kylie on NBC nightly news

Last night NBC Nightly News played the beginning of Kylie during a montage of famous people giving commencement speeches.

General Board / the next Ben Folds Presents album
« on: May 06, 2009, 07:58:44 PM »
Please let it be "Pickin' on Ben Folds."  Seriously.  If I could hear a bluegrass version of The Bitch Went Nuts (or Nutz), I could die happy.  Then and only then.

Tour Board / who's going to the Louisville show?
« on: October 03, 2008, 08:27:19 PM »
*raises hand*

General Board / Altoid piano percussion
« on: May 11, 2008, 11:14:21 AM »
Okay, has anyone actually seen the set up that Ben uses for "Free Coffee"?  I'm dying to build a similar rig and test it out.   How exactly does he put it together?  I'm imagining that the hinge out of the Altoid tin can be popped off somehow, but that's as far as my brain goes.

Album Board / Fear of Pop reissue??
« on: April 30, 2008, 06:15:06 AM »
So my homie that works at a chain music store found a listing for Fear of Pop in the system and preordered it. It was supposed to be out April 1 but got pushed back.  Anyone know anything about this?  Is it just a reissue, or is it a remastered/deluxe edition?  Better yet, FOP pt.2?

I was kind of hoping that it was an April Fools prank at first, like "Gotcha!  You fans will buy anything!"
